Egypt: Freedom of Expression Is in Danger and the Coming Is the Most Dangerous

Posted: October 6, 2012 at 8:16 pm

ANHRI's Report on the Freedom of Expression During Mohamed Morsi's Rule

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information "ANHRI" exposes the absence of the regime's political will in Egypt, under the rule of the first civilian-elect president, to respect the freedom of opinion, expression and freedom of the press after three months of Morsi's rule. Egypt had experienced most of the violations against the freedom of expression, with its all branches, starting from the physical assaults against the critics and media-staff, legal prosecution, Hisbah cases and censorship and confiscation. Such violations arouses a lot of huge concerns regarding the future of the freedom of expression and democracy in the near future.

Despite that Dr. Mohamed Morsi did not guarantee the freedom of expression or the freedom of the press among the issues of which he promised in the first 100 days of his rule, but we know and understand that. Such understand stems from that the freedom of expression needs a long time to reconsider the importance of it. In particularly, after long years of the tyrant military rule or its a value considered by the Islamic trend, of which Morsi belongs to, as a synonymous with insolence and insult to the leaders and the rulers of the country.

Therefore, the report issued today entitled (we do not hostile or care about it: Freedom of Expression in the Rule of the First Civilian-elect President, After Three Months).

It cares primarily, despite it monitors some of the violations against freedom of expression, about

search for any indicator or evidence related to the availability of the political will to respect the freedom or expression and the freedom of the press. ANHRI did not found any of these indicators or evidences.

Today and before the first end of the 100 days of Morsi, as the first civilian-elect president after the popular revolution that was respected by all over the globe, we found ourselves in the position, with deep sorrow, to declare that what have conducted against freedom of expression does not need time to wait more, but it needs to set the alarm strongly and quickly!!

Freedom of expression, with all of its branches, is in danger in Egypt;

cases, physical assaults, confiscation, censorship, Hisbah and blockade to creativity!!

Egypt had witnessed all kinds of violations. As any progress, development in the standard of living of the citizen or protecting his civil and political rights will be counted in the favor of the president so any deterioration or violation will be counted against the president as well. The serious violations suffered by the writers, journalists and critics will be counted against the Morsi and declare the absence of the political will to respect these rights; freedom of expression on the top of it.

Nacua, Liberty Hold Off Coronado

Posted: at 8:15 pm

Posted: Oct. 6, 2012 | 12:17 a.m.

Liberty's Kai Nacua did a little bit of everything on Friday night.

And when the senior launched himself toward the pylon from just inside the 5-yard line, he made sure his team finished with a homecoming victory.

Nacua's dive completed an 11-yard touchdown run with 9:38 to play that broke a 29-29 tie, and the No. 2 Patriots held on for a 35-29 win over visiting Coronado.

"It was a lead option," Nacua said. "And I saw the outside open, and I just started running at it. They tripped me up a little, and I saw the pylon and just dove into it."

The touchdown run capped an outstanding all-around game for Nacua. The Brigham Young-bound senior completed 14 of 22 passes for 223 yards, rushed for the touchdown, intercepted a pass on defense and recorded a tackle for loss.

"That's why he's a Division I football player," Liberty coach Rich Muraco said. "He makes plays. He stands out. He can do everything."

That included being named homecoming king at halftime.

"That was a cool experience," Nacua said.

Tenth-ranked Coronado (3-2, 0-1 Southeast League) stayed with Liberty (4-1, 1-0) all night thanks to a series of big plays.

Apple Maps Fixes the Statue of Liberty

Posted: at 8:15 pm

Apple's promised updates to Maps in iOS 6 are starting to roll out, starting with the Statue of Liberty.

[More from Mashable: Steve Jobs Tribute MacBook to be Auctioned for Charity]

Until Friday afternoon, the Lady Liberty was a pixelated mess in Apple's new homegrown mapping app. Thanks to a server update, the statue -- and all of Liberty Island -- is now replicated in beautiful 3D.

Check out the differences below:

[More from Mashable: The Insanely Great Chart of Apples History]

Since releasing Apple Maps as part of iOS 6, Apple has faced criticism from its users and competitors because of the unfinished state of the 3D depictions -- as well as the uneven mapping data. Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for the product, admitting that it "fell short" of Apple's standards.

Fixing the Statue of Liberty might not stop Apple from being the butt of industry-related jokes, but it is a sign that the product is getting better.

France's gift to America might have received a makeover, but its own iconic landmark wasn't as lucky. The Eiffel Tower in Paris remains an two-dimensional block of pixels.

Have you noticed any other improvements to Apple Maps? Let us know in the comments.

Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, ?uestlove, Bruno Mars & Will.i.am. Get Animated for 'Cleveland Show'

Hip-hop's storied obsession with the Illuminati is going further than the lyrics on Tupac's posthumourous Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory or the imagery in Jay-Z's "On To the Next One" video. It's taking center stage on the Season 4 premiere of FOX's The Cleveland Show.

TV Guide was given the first still from the episode, which can be seen above. After being jipped of a co-writing credit on the Kanye West hit, "Be-Cleve in Yourself," Cleveland is introduced to the world of hip-hop's secret society. The episode, titled "Menace II Secret Society," also stars animated versions of Nicki Minaj, ?uestlove of the Roots, Bruno Mars and will.i.am as cloaked members of the secret rap sect headed by West.

Cleveland inadvertently breaks into it and then its how he will either bring them down or theyll bring him down, the show's executive producer Rich Appel told fans at Comic Con earlier this summer. We have a couple of original songs with Kanye and will and Bruno, I mean, all of them, it was great.

The episode airs Oct. 21 at 7:30/6:30c on FOX.

Philippines: ‘Cybercrime’ law threatens free speech and must be reviewed

Posted: at 8:12 pm

A new cybercrime law in the Philippines poses serious risks to freedom of expression and must be reviewed, Amnesty International said.

Under the new law, known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 101750), a person could be sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for posting online comments judged to be libellous.

The cybercrime law rolls back protections for free speech in the Philippines. Under this law, a peaceful posting on the Internet could result in a prison sentence, said Isabelle Arradon, deputy Asia director at Amnesty International.

The law, which came into effect on Wednesday, broadly extends criminal libel (defined in the Philippines as the public and malicious imputation of a discreditable act that tends to discredit or dishonour another person and which currently exists under the Revised Penal Code) to apply to acts committed through a computer system or any other similar means which may be devised in the future.

It also increases the criminal penalties for libel in computer-related cases.

In January 2011, the UN Human Rights Committee found the Philippiness criminalization of libel to be incompatible with the freedom of expression clause in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The Human Rights Committee said that, in the case of Alexander Adonis, a journalist who was imprisoned for libel for two years in 2007, the Philippines was obligated to take steps to prevent similar violations occurring in the future, including by reviewing the relevant libel legislation.

Instead of bringing its libel legislation in line with its UN treaty obligations, the Philippines has set the stage for further human rights violations by embedding criminal libel in the cybercrime law, said Arradon.

The law gives the Department of Justice the power to close down websites and monitor online activities without a warrant. This violates due process guarantees and will have a chilling effect on freedom of expression.

To date, at least five petitions have been filed asking the Philippine Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the new law.

SpaceX ready to resupply space station

Posted: at 11:20 am

Hawthorne-based rocket maker SpaceX is poised to return to the International Space Station with its Dragon spacecraft to carry out the first contracted cargo resupply flight in NASA's history.

SpaceX performed a successful demonstration mission to the space station in May, showing NASA that the company could do the job. SpaceX has secured a $1.6-billion contract to carry out 12 such cargo missions, and Sunday's mission would be the first.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set to blast off at 8:34 p.m. EDT Sunday from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, Fla., carrying the Dragon capsule packed with 1,000 pounds of food, water and supplies.

"I'm still quite nervous about it because it's just our second mission to the station," Elon Musk, SpaceX's 41-year-old billionaire founder and chief executive said. "We're hoping that this mission goes as smoothly as the last one."

With last year's retirement of the space shuttle fleet, NASA is eager to give private industry the job of carrying cargo and crews, in hopes of cutting costs. Meanwhile, the space agency will focus on deep-space missions to land probes on asteroids and Mars.

Another aerospace firm, Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., is nipping at SpaceX's heels with a test flight of its commercial rocket set for later this year. Orbital has a $1.9-billion cargo-hauling contract with NASA. The company is running tests on its Antares rocket at a launch pad at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia for a separate resupply mission.

Critics, including some former astronauts and members of Congress, have voiced concerns about NASA's move toward private space missions. They contend that private space companies are risky ventures with unproven technology and say that the missions should be handled by NASA flight-proven hardware.

But SpaceX, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., has quieted many opponents after its successful demonstration mission, though it still faces opposition.

"A SpaceX failure back then, or indeed a slip-up on the next launch, would give ammunition to congressional critics, who in many cases are trying to bring home the bacon for their own constituents," said Tim Farrar, president of the consulting and research firm Telecom, Media & Finance Associates Inc. in Menlo Park, Calif. "Continued success on SpaceX's part makes it much harder to argue for continuing to invest in traditional contracts."

During that nine-day demonstration, the Dragon spacecraft rendezvoused with the $100-billion space station and tested sensors and processors by linking up with the orbiting outpost's onboard computers.

One Year In Space: US-Russian Crew Launching Audacious Spaceflight in 2015

Posted: at 11:20 am

The first-ever year-long mission to the International Space Station will launch in 2015 and feature an American-Russian crew, NASA revealed today (Oct. 5).

Two astronauts one Russian and one American will launch together in spring 2015 on an experimental endurance mission that will last twice as long as current stays aboard the orbiting lab. The main goal is to gather data that will help lay the groundwork for manned flights to destinations in deep space, officials said.

"In order for us to eventually move beyond low-Earth orbit, we need to better understand how humans adapt to long-term spaceflight," NASA's Michael Suffredini, International Space Station program manager, said in a statement. "The space station serves as a vital scientific resource for teaching us those lessons, and this year-long expedition aboard the complex will help us move closer to those journeys."

The announcement confirms speculation that has been bubbling for several months. Earlier this week, a Russian space official claimed the marathon mission was a done deal, but until today NASA had simply said that such a flight was under consideration. [Most Extreme Human Spaceflight Records]

Launching two astronauts means that one seat on the mission's three-person Soyuz spacecraft may be available for another crewmember. On Oct. 10, British singer Sarah Brightman will make a "groundbreaking announcement" about space travel, and some observers speculate that she or somebody else may be taking the Soyuz' third seat as a space tourist.

During the 12 years that people have lived continuously aboard the space station, scientists have learned a lot about how microgravity affects the human body. They've documented significant effects, for example, on bone density, muscle mass, strength and vision.

But that information has been based on orbital stays that lasted a maximum of six months. Studying astronauts on a year-long mission should yield even greater insights into crew health and performance, researchers said.

"We have gained new knowledge about the effects of spaceflight on the human body from the scientific research conducted on the space station, and it is the perfect time to test a one-year expedition aboard the orbital laboratory," said Julie Robinson, NASA's program scientist for the International Space Station. "What we will gain from this expedition will influence the way we structure our human research plans in the future."

NASA has a keen interest in learning how the human body holds up for long stretches in space, for the agency is currently working to send astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025 and Mars by the mid-2030s. A manned roundtrip journey to Mars could take around two years, according to some mission concepts.

Neither NASA nor the Russian Federal Space Agency, which is known as Roscosmos, has revealed who the two astronauts will be. A few months ago, however, Russia's Interfax news agency reported that the NASA crewmember could be Peggy Whitson, who recently stepped down as the agency's chief astronaut to rejoin its active spaceflying ranks.

SpaceX set for its first cargo run to space station

Posted: at 11:20 am

Cape Canaveral, Florida (Reuters) - Space Exploration Technologies, the first private company to fly to the International Space Station, is poised to launch its initial cargo mission to the orbital outpost as part of a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to deliver supplies.

Liftoff of the company's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. EDT on Sunday (0035 GMT Monday) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

If successful, the company, founded and run by Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, will restore a U.S. supply line to the station that was cut off by the retirement of the space shuttles last year.

Since then, NASA has been dependent on Russian, European and Japanese freighters to service the station, a permanently staffed research laboratory that flies about 250 miles above Earth.

In May the firm, also known as SpaceX, made a practice run to the $100 billion orbital outpost, a project of 15 countries, clearing the way for the first of 12 cargo runs.

SpaceX is one of two firms hired by NASA to deliver cargo to the station.

Its other contractor, Orbital Sciences Corp., on October 1 rolled out its first Antares rocket to a new launch pad on Wallops Island, Virginia, for an engine test-firing slated for this month or early November.

The rocket is scheduled to make its debut flight before the end of the year.

Orbital also plans a practice run to the space station, similar to what SpaceX did when its Dragon ship docked at the station. If all goes well, Orbital will be cleared to begin work on its $1.9-billion NASA contract to fly cargo to the station.
