Freedom Meditech Forges Ahead With New Credit Line
Posted: October 4, 2012 at 4:21 pm
Opthalmic products developer Freedom Meditech Inc. of San Diego plans to use a recently secured $2 million line of credit from Silicon Valley Bank to ramp up manufacturing and distribution of its ClearPath DS-120 Lens Fluorescence Biomicroscope.
The ClearPath DS-120, which is currently under regulatory review in the U.S. and European Union, is designed to evaluate the crystalline lens of the human eye in order to detect chronic disease such as diabetes.
SVBs due diligence on our ClearPath DS-120 showed a strong mix of proven technology, market opportunity and just how far we have come in reducing manufacturing, regulatory and marketing risk for the product, said Craig Misrach, chairman and CEO of Freedom Meditech. The financing provided by SVB is a springboard to launch this new and exciting product in the global health care marketplace.
Terms of the credit facility include an initial disbursement with additional funds available upon attaining certain milestones. The transaction comes as the company waits for its Series B financing round to close.
Freedom Meditech said in a statement that it plans to launch the ClearPath in international markets with an initial focus on countries that accept the CE Mark and CSA Certification Mark. The CE Mark is required to sell in the 27 countries that comprise the European Union and is a gateway to other nonregulated markets. CSA certification is required to sell in Canada and is an entre to certain Latin American markets. The product is also under FDA 510(k) review.
The ClearPath DS-120 incorporates the use of proprietary biophotonic spectroscopy to detect autofluorescence of the crystalline lens of the eye. The ClearPath non-invasively scans blue light into the lens of the eye in less than six seconds and produces a result immediately at the point of care. The company says the test is painless, requires no special preparation such as fasting, and produces no bio-hazardous waste or disposal cost.

MY feelings are dead. I have my body and my soul only. All my parts of the body are now stopped working properly. Hearing, looking, tasting and all the feelings are gone and I am living without anything. So says Arjuna.
Arjuna writes to stay sane, but feels like he is losing the battle. He survives on a diet of sleeping tablets and tries to keep thoughts of self-harm at bay by thinking of the wife and child he was forced to leave behind in Sri Lanka.
He wrote the words above on the eve of a court decision that will determine his fate and that of more than 50 asylum seekers, most of them Tamils like himself who have been found to be refugees but face the prospect of a life without liberty. They are owed Australia's protection under international law, but have been deemed threats to national security by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
Ranjini
This afternoon, the High Court will hand down its decision on a challenge by Arjuna to ASIO's refusal to spell out why they say he is a security threat, and the Gillard government's decision to detain him indefinitely.

Arjuna (not his real name) is 36 and has been in detention in Australia for three years. The others are being held in detention centres as remote as Port Augusta in South Australia, and in Broadmeadows, Maribyrnong and Sydney. They include Ranjini, the pregnant mother of two young boys, and two other family groups with small children.
Arjuna fled his homeland in 2006 and registered his name with the United Nations' refugee agency in Indonesia in July, 2009. After four months of inaction, he paid a people smuggler to take him by boat to Christmas Island and, with 80 others, was taken on board a customs vessel, the Oceanic Viking, on October 18 after the boat was intercepted.
When the Oceanic Viking took them to an Indonesian port, the asylum seekers refused to disembark and a month-long stand-off ended only after a commitment that those found to be refugees would be resettled within another month.

Hague champions internet freedom
Posted: at 4:21 pm
Democratic governments must protect the freedom of the internet - even when it provokes crises like the recent anti-Islamic video, Foreign Secretary William Hague said.
Addressing an international cyberspace conference in Budapest, he said states should always "err on the side of freedom", even when they found online content offensive or objectionable.
Mr Hague acknowledged the difficulties caused by postings such as the amateur trailer made in the United States which portrayed the Prophet Mohammad as a womaniser and a fool. It was, he said, a "contemptible piece of work" and he deplored the deaths which occurred in the riots which it provoked across the Muslim world.
He warned, however, that attempts by governments to block access to such material were counterproductive and doomed to failure.
"We believe that efforts to suppress the internet are wrong and are bound to fail over time," he said. "Governments who attempt this are erecting barricades against an unstoppable tide, and acting against their own long-term economic interests and their security.
"Democratic governments must resist the calls to censor a wide range of content just because they or others find it offensive or objectionable. If we go down that path, we begin to erode the hard won rights of freedom of expression. We will always argue that is its necessary to err on the side of freedom."
At the same time, Mr Hague announced the UK was establishing a 2 million cyber security centre offering advice to countries on how to protect their systems against online criminals who threaten the future economic well-being of states and major companies.
It will draw on the expertise of a network of eight universities currently conducting cutting-edge research on the issue and act as a forum to draw together initiatives from around the world.
"Cyber criminals and terrorists should have no refuge online, just as they should have no sanctuary offline," Mr Hague said.

Freedom Autosport claim 2nd in CTSCC driver, team championship at Lime Rock
Posted: at 4:21 pm
LAKEVILLE, Conn.Freedom Autosports season finale at Lime Rock Park wrapped up a year of consistency and hard work that earned the team second in both the Street Tuner team and driver championships in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
#25 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5: Tom Long, Derek Whitis
For most of the race, the team was poised to do just that. After starting on the pole, Whitis was never out of the top two and led the race during his stint. After a quick pit stop, Long took over and was also running up front. As the race progressed, though, a misfire developed that slowed lap times.
Eventually, Long crossed the finish line in tenth. Although it wasnt enough for a championship, both Whitis and Long are quick to note that the finish caps off a season with no DNFs for the No. 25 Mazda. In fact, they won the Continental Tire Driving Confidence Award for completing the most ST miles during the season.
Whitis comments, I couldnt be prouder of all the Freedom Autosport folks who put us on the track with the fastest and most dependable Mazda possible. All of our success this year is due to their work and their efforts. Thanks to Mazda, the amazing Freedom crew, and most of all, the veterans and troops who make it all possible.
The Freedom Autosport crew really proved themselves with the new cars they built this year, says Long. They are the reason weve had such consistency and reliability all season, and theyve given so much hard work and dedication this year: in the shop, at the track, and especially in pit stops.
The No. 25 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 took second in the Street Tuner team championship with 226 points, just three points behind the leader. The same points spread gave Whitis and Long second in the driver championship. Freedom Autosport also helped Mazda finish the season with second in the manufacturer championship.
In addition to racing, Freedom Autosport also hosted Liam Dwyer throughout the weekend. Dwyer was injured in Afghanistan while serving in the Marines, and hes not only a race fan but a track day enthusiast. He has even rigged up a system so he can drive with his prosthetic leg.
On Saturday night, Dwyer was Freedom Autosports guest at the championship banquet, where he was introduced and received a standing ovation from the series teams.

Freedom Flashing Products Launched to Sell Innovative Quick-Fit End Dam
Posted: at 4:21 pm
MENOMONEE FALLS, WI--(Marketwire - Oct 4, 2012) - Freedom Flashing Products Inc. has been launched to offer a new seamless end dam with an adjustable rear leg and moveable web to provide a superior seal in window flashing.
"The flexible, Quick-Fit End Dam provides outstanding security against water damage around window and door openings," said Michelle Draghicchio, president of Freedom Flashing Products in Menomonee Falls, Wis.
"The Quick-Fit End Dam's moveable web and adjustable rear leg make installation -- even the tricky ones where you find cavity variations -- a breeze," Draghicchio said. "Masons will value the flexibility that provides a superior seam as part of the flashing system."
The moveable web provides a watertight pan without the need for soldering, welding or caulking. The adjustable rear leg may be tilted to adjust for nonparallel cavity variations between the inner and outer wall components.
The standard dimensions of the prefabricated Quick-Fit End Dam are 6" depth, 3" rear leg height, 6" web width, and 3-3/4" base width. End dams in other dimensions can be fabricated upon request. Left and right side versions are available.
End dams are commonly handmade on a job site. With the Quick-Fit End Dam, a mason just needs to pop the end dam in place and complete the flashing system. He saves time and gets a superior seal.
"Give two masons the task of field constructing an end dam, and you will often end up with two very different items," said Kyle Ray of Freedom Flashing Products. "And neither of them could fabricate an end dam that would adjust for the cavity variations that are often found between the inner and outer wall assembly. The new Quick-Fit End Dam provides a consistently superior seamless seal while offering flexibility."
Freedom Flashing Products is the exclusive provider of the patented Quick-Fit End Dam, which is being manufactured in metro Milwaukee and delivered nationwide.
Freedom Flashing Products is on the web at http://www.ffproducts.com, and can be reached at 262-951-6540.

Andy Warhol ‘Statue of Liberty’ May Fetch $35 Million
Posted: at 4:20 pm
Andy Warhols 1962 Statue of Liberty could fetch more than $35 million when its auctioned on Nov. 14 at Christies in New York.
The statue is depicted 24 times, in four rows of six images. Silkscreened in red over green ink on white background, the work has a three-dimensional effect.
If you put on 3-D glasses, it becomes a grainy, black and white 3-D photograph, said Brett Gorvy, chairman and international head of postwar and contemporary art at Christies. Well be giving 3-D glasses with our catalogs.
Two other examples of Warhols 1962 experimentations with 3-D are Optical Car Crash, which is in the collection of the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland, and another Statue of Liberty from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
In the 1960s, 3-D was known from the horror movies, Gorvy said. Warhol actually made a 3-D movie in the 1970s. It was about Frankenstein.
The choice of colors is connected to works in Warhols Death and Disaster series, which often are in strong greens or strong reds. A painting from the series, Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), (1963) sold for $71.7 million in 2007 and remains Warhols auction record.
Statue of Liberty had belonged to German entrepreneur Erich Marx, whose art collection became the core of the Hamburger Bahnhof contemporary-art museum in Berlin. The work was later acquired by the Daros Collection in Zurich, which sold it privately in the past decade to the current consigner, according to Gorvy.
Statue of Liberty will appear in the same sale as Warhols 1966 portrait of leather-clad Marlon Brando on a motorcycle, expected to bring about $20 million. Titled Marlon, the work comes from the collection of Donald L. Bryant, a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art who bought it for $5 million at Christies in 2003.
So far, the highest estimate of the November auctions in New York belongs to Rothkos 1954 No. 1 (Royal Red and Blue), valued between $35 million and $50 million. It will be offered at Sothebys evening sale of contemporary art on Nov. 13.
Muse highlights include Rich Jaroslovsky on technology, Manuela Hoelterhoff on the arts.

Liberty Knocks Off Gators

Liberty sophomores Tristan Hoyle and Matthew Drongesen had one objective in the third round of Wednesday's Division I Sunrise Region semifinal at Green Valley.
Their job was to stave off the Gators' Matthew Chen and Isaac Wellish in the final match. In doing so, the Patriots would punch their ticket to the team final.
"We knew going into the final game we had a good chance to break their serve," Hoyle said. "We were up close within the past couple of games, but we figured if we stepped it up and kept it away from their better player, we would have a good shot at it."
The duo did exactly that, outlasting Chen and Wellish 6-4 in the deciding match to secure Liberty's 10-8 victory and a spot in the Sunrise final against Coronado at 8 a.m. Saturday at Darling Tennis Center.
"We're happy with the win," said Liberty coach Kih Gourrier, whose team reached its first region final. "I knew it would be a close match; 10-8, 11-7, it didn't really matter as long as we came out with the win."
Hoyle and Drongesen went 3-0, including a 7-6 victory decided on the tiebreaker against Green Valley's Jake Johnson and John John. After splitting six matches in the first round, Liberty (10-2) grabbed four points in the second round to take a 7-5 lead.
"We know we had some important matches that we knew we had to take care of today to keep us on top," Hoyle said. "I figured right off the bat that we were going to have to go 3-0 in doubles for us to pull it off."
Liberty's Dylan Ihmels and Chitnarong Sopat each went 3-0 in singles.
The doubles teams of Chen and Wellish, Johnson and John, and Parker Phelps and Amar Shah each went 2-1 for the Gators (12-1).

Rick Ross and T.I. Confront Mortality in 'Bury Me a G' Video
Posted: at 4:20 pm
Maybach Music Group head Rick Ross lays out his last will and testament in the Self Made Vol. 2 track "Bury Me A G," which just got an OG rappers-on-the-stoop visual treatment. Directed by DRE Frilms and Jon J., the clip is dedicated to Ross' rap associate Raymond "PNut" Adderly, who was murdered in Florida in 2010 during a home invasion. It's a somber occasion, so Ross has removed his signature sunglasses for a few shots. Footage of hearses, caskets, and a funeral procession fill in the gaps.
The song borrows little from Tupac Shakur's '94 trailblazer of the same name (and even less from the 2006 version by Ross' alleged BET Hip Hop Awards nemesis, Young Jeezy), but the #thuglife sentiment remains the same. When Rozay goes, put him in "clean drawers" and lay him next to his "dawgs." Grand Hustle boss T.I. offers a short verse before the heavy hook brings 'er home.

Killer Mike Overthrows the Illuminati in 'Reagan' Video
Posted: at 4:19 pm
Animated clip portrays Bush and Obama as finger puppets
There's a reason that Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music is a SPIN Essential, and a song like "Reagan" exemplifies that reason. Over a crunchy dystopic El-P beat, the Atlanta MC, in the words of our own Christopher R. Weingarten, "somehow contextualizes Ollie North, Reaganomics, and preRodney King police brutality for a 2012 audience." The song is well matched by a brand new animated video, premiered over at Pitchfork and embedded below, which portrays the titular president as a mere puppet caught in a complicated web of crossed marionette strings and wagging fingers. In the beginning, a disgruntled citizen walks down a boulevard filled with shops that advertise, "Hawt Shit," "Fresh Kiks," "Drink Ketchup," and "Shiney Stuff." By the end, revenge comes in the form of a huge robot controlled by an unexpected antagonist.

Q&A: Guns, politics and the American constitution
Posted: at 4:18 pm
The second amendment to the American constitution is subject to conflicting interpretations, says Professor Ryan Hurl. Credit: Bigstock photo
Mass shootings at a Dark Knight Rises screening in Colorado and at a mosque in Wisconsin this past summer reignited the national conversation about gun control in the U.S. Writer Jenny Hallasked Professor Ryan Hurl of political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough to help interpret the second amendment to the American constitution.
We hear a lot about the second amendment, but many Canadians might not know what it actually says. Can you tell us?
The text states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
What does that mean?
The meaning is not entirely clear and it's subject to contrasting and even conflicting interpretations.
The dominant view today is that the second part of the amendment is most importantthe right of the people to keep and bear arms. On the other hand, you have the first part, about a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state.
The question is, what is the relationship between the two parts of the amendment? Does the first clause structure the meaning of the individual right? That's what a lot of the disagreement is about.
Does it matter what the intent was at the time it was written?
Historically, the argument is about the dangers of standing armies, of what we might call a military establishment. For many Americans at the time of the revolution, a permanent army was regarded as a threat to freedom.
