Anifah: Freedom of expression not licence for extremism
Posted: October 1, 2012 at 1:14 pm
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 Freedom of expression should come with social responsibility, especially in combating extremism, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.
Referring to the recent uproar fuelled by the release of the anti-Islam video, Innocence of Muslims, he said such irresponsible action could not be defended under the pretext of human rights, freedom or liberty.
A line should be drawn when the prejudicial effect outweighs everything else. Malaysia has always maintained that freedom, including freedom of expression, comes with responsibility, Anifah (picture) said at the 67th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) general debate in New York today. His speech was made available here.
This years UNGA is themed Bringing about Adjustment or Settlement of International Disputes or Situations by Peaceful Means.
Condemning the irresponsible action of those who intentionally incited hatred, Anifah said Malaysia was equally saddened by the violent reaction which ensued.
He said using violence to express anger would only result in further divides, more damage and loss of innocent lives.
It is, therefore, important that we continue to practise moderation as we face the rising tide of extremism. Moderation is the best response to overcome extremism, he said.
On another matter, Anifah said Malaysia condemned the violence and senseless killings that continued in Syria, and hoped any further action to help the nation would be in the interest of the Syrian people.
He also called upon Israel to stop illegal settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
We are particularly concerned by the threats to invade or divide the site of Al-Aqsa Mosque, which would be a breach of Israels obligation as an occupying power, he said.

Afghan media claim small victory in fight for press freedom
Posted: at 1:14 pm
KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan journalists are claiming a small victory in their battle for press freedom after the government agreed to some softening of media restrictions, industry representatives said on Monday.
Journalists have been locked in a row with the government for months after authorities proposed a revision of the existing media law, which looked to significantly tighten Kabul's grip over the fledgling but lively Afghan press corps.
The legislation raised fresh concerns that authorities were trying to appeal to the more conservative side of society ahead of the pullout of most foreign troops by the end of 2014.
A frequent gripe though was that the changes would have forced reporters to "observe the principles of Islam", a vague catch-all stipulation which some journalists say the government uses to detain them.
The Ministry of Information and Culture agreed to five of 19 changes suggested by journalists. They include getting rid of special courts for alleged media violations and a clause that proposed restriction on foreign programming on radio and TV.
"Afghan journalists consider the new proposal of the media law a move in the right direction," said Abdul Mujeeb Khalvatgar, executive director of media advocacy group Nai.
"Taking in the considerations of the (media) community means the government believes in, trusts and recognizes our field."
President Hamid Karzai trumpets the existing 2009 law, which took years to pass, as one of his government's major achievements, though war and an atmosphere of impunity make Afghanistan one of the most dangerous places to be a journalist.
The new draft still presents the media with restrictions, including a heavy government presence on the High Media Council, a 15-member body which has enormous sway over ethics and legal procedures.
"This draft is significantly better than the last one, but the biggest question still remains, which is why there is a need for a new law in the first place," said Heather Barr, Afghanistan researcher for Human Rights Watch.

Liberty Plaza: Experts say rethinking ways to get more people into park is more important than redesigning it
Posted: at 1:13 pm
While Ann Arbor city officials begin to consider a redesign of Liberty Plaza, experts point to the areas outside the parks boundaries as catalysts for the plaza's improvement.
Mayor John Hieftje told AnnArbor.com there are plans in the works to redesign the park, including potentially bringing the park up to street level instead of having a two-tiered sunken design. While the changes may bring some improvements, experts believe the areas right around the park play a bigger role in any future improvement.
Amy Kuras, the citys park planner, said the development around any urban space is what determines the success or failure of the space. Kuras said the immediate area around Liberty Plaza the Liberty Square building and the Kempf House is not a foot traffic generator. Whether the new underground Library Lot, and whatever development eventually is built atop it, changes the number of pedestrians at the corner remains to be seen.
Without establishments bringing in different groups of people, Liberty Plaza becomes a spot with a crowd of regulars who may not look kindly on outsiders, according to Kuras.
I would love to see it used more by all kinds of people, Kuras said. How we arrive at that, Im not sure what the answer is at this point. Its not just changing the configuration of the park.
Kuras compared Liberty Plaza to Sculpture Plaza, another concrete plaza at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Catherine Street. She said one of the reasons Sculpture Plaza has become a successful and popular area is because of the restaurants and shops that draw customers who utilize the space.
Kirk Westphal, an Ann Arbor documentarian who studied the city from a pedestrians point of view for a masters degree in urban planning, said Sculpture Plaza is the ideal situation thanks to the businesses surrounding it.
Liberty Plaza has what Westphal calls a key ingredient to success: Foot traffic along Liberty Street. However, there are not enough people actually going into the plaza.
Any urban space that lacks foot traffic through it can be problematic, and the key is getting a diversity of users, Westphal said. Its not about keeping unemployed people out, its about making sure there are enough people in total using the space.
When the park was completed in 1978, there was a restaurant in the 330 E. Liberty St. building next door, along with a book store in the bottom floor. Kuras said this brought more foot traffic into the plaza, but there were still problems from the start.

Liberty Gold Corp. Reports On International Tower Hill's New High-Grade Gold Intercepts On Adjoining Livengood Property
Posted: at 1:13 pm
PHOENIX, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Liberty Gold Corp. (OTCBB: LBGO; "Liberty Gold" and/or "the Company") is pleased to report on International Tower Hill's (ITH) August 21, 2012 announcement of new, high-grade gold intercepts surrounding ITH's main deposit at its Livengood Gold Project in Alaska. ITH's Livengood Property immediately adjoins the western side of Liberty Gold's 4,620-acre McCord Creek Property. The Money Knob deposit on ITH's Livengood Property represents a resource estimate of 16.5 million ounces (Moz) Measured & Indicated at 0.22 grams per tonne cut-off (see ITH website for complete disclosure), making it one of the largest gold deposits discovered in 20 years.
The latest ITH drill results were from a non-exploration directed drill program involving 45 geotechnical and condemnation drill holes in the Livengood project area. According to ITH's August 21, 2012 news release, assay results from four of the holes drilled returned multi-gram gold intersections (intercepts were calculated using a 0.25 g/t gold cutoff and a maximum of 3 meters of internal waste). ITH stressed that, since the new gold intersections are located well outboard of the main deposit, the results indicated the significant exploration potential of the Livengood district scale gold system while highlighting the potential for further bulk tonnage and high-grade discoveries on the property. ITH Interim CEO, Jeff Pontius, commented in the news release: "It is clear that the Livengood gold system is a District scale gold discovery with significant future potential."

Harris Corporation Introduces Liberty-Radio Control Equipment for Air Traffic Control Communications
Posted: at 1:13 pm
WASHINGTON & GATINEAU, QC, Canada--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Harris Corporation (HRS), an international communications and information technology company, is introducing its Liberty-Radio Control Equipment (RCE) a flexible gateway product that provides aviation authorities with the next generation of integrated radio control, network routing, and circuit adaptation solutions. The announcement was made during the 57th Annual Air Traffic Control Association Conference and Exposition being held October 1-3 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in Washington, DC.
Capable of emulating any radio link and broadcasting it over a variety of transmission mediums, the Liberty-RCE will enable communications in harsh conditions and in isolated environments where digital service is typically scarce and reliance on legacy links and older analog technology is still required.
The Liberty-RCE is capable of totally reshaping a network and offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing fluctuations in network traffic and demands on operations to be easily managed. The system allows for the operation and compression of up to six radios per chassis into a single 64 kbps link. The Liberty-RCE supports Split Site Operations as well as Dual Control Site Operations whereby frequencies from two voice communication control system (VCCS) sites (local or remote) can simultaneously access the same radio resources.
A commercial-off-the-shelf device, the Liberty-RCE was specifically engineered to multiplex voice and data signals transmitted between air traffic control (ATC) facilities and deployed radios over satellite, traditional telecommunications links, or newer topologies like Internet Protocol (IP). The Liberty-RCE will facilitate the transmission of data services including digital voice, legacy analog voice, SatCom, datalink, ADS-B, TIS-B, FIS-B, and is interoperable with any brand of VCCS or ATC radio.
The Liberty-RCEs compact 3U chassis offers a sophisticated, fully redundant architecture that ensures system reliability and offers exceptionally high availability to meet any critical communications requirement. The system is also configured with redundant power supplies that can operate in AC or a combination of AC/DC.
Harris Liberty-RCE provides authorities with an opportunity to take advantage of their existing infrastructure by extending investments made and allowing them to ease into new technologies at their own pace and as network standards evolve, said John O'Sullivan, vice president, Mission Critical Networks, Harris Government Communications Systems. Whether deployed in a network operations center or in a remote location, the Liberty-RCE provides aviation authorities with a cost-effective, scalable and highly reliable communications solution.
Recently, the Liberty-RCE was selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an interim solution after they encountered technical issues operating legacy RCE while deploying a remote air/ground communications facility on the oil platform Independence Hub in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ryan Tells Hunters Second Obama Term Makes Him 'Shudder'
Posted: at 1:11 pm
(Jay LaPrete/AP Photo)
COLUMBUS, Ohio Paul Ryan warned a group of hunters and fishermen this evening that he shudder(s) to think what President Obama would do if he never has to face the voters ever again.
You see the federal government already infringing upon the First Amendment right to religious liberty, Ryan said, referring to the federal mandate that all employers include insurance coverage for birth control.
I see the president put these kind of regulations out there in a tough election year that could cost him votes, I wonder, I shudder as a gun owner, seeing his record when he was in the Illinois State Senate, what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again? Ryan said. These are the kinds of questions we think about.
The next president will appoint a lot of different judges and these are lifetime appointments, he said. If you want to make sure that judges respect our Second Amendment rights, you need a president who respects those rights as well.
Speaking at the U.S. Sportsmens Alliances Annual Save Our Heritage banquet, the GOP vice presidential nominee stressed that his ticket would respect the Second Amendment.
Ryan is an avid hunter and an accomplished bow hunter and this states season for bow hunting kicked off today. He was welcomed into the group of fellow sportsmen with a gift of a 20 gauge shot gun.
Ryan grabbed the gun and held it, but then gave it back citing congressional ethics rules. He donated it to the silent auction, which already had a hunting hog decoy, South African safari, and Alaska fishing trip up for grabs.
He told the group to remember one thing: we are all taxpayers.
That means we as taxpayers own our public land, Ryan said. Hunters are the original conservationists. Bureaucrats more and more these days think that public lands have to be protected from hunters. I myself see it another way; I think hunters need to be protected by the bureaucrats.

Paul Ryan Tells Hunters Thought of Second Obama Term Makes Him 'Shudder'

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Paul Ryan warned a group of hunters and fishermen this evening that he "shudder(s)" to think what President Obama would do "if he never has to face the voters ever again."
"You see the federal government already infringing upon the First Amendment right to religious liberty," Ryan said, referring to the federal mandate that all employers include insurance coverage for birth control.
"I see the president put these kind of regulations out there in a tough election year that could cost him votes, I wonder, I shudder as a gun owner, seeing his record when he was in the Illinois State Senate, what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again?" Speaking at the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance's Annual "Save Our Heritage" banquet, the GOP vice presidential nominee stressed that his ticket would "respect the Second Amendment."
Ryan is an avid hunter and an accomplished bow hunter and this state's season for bow hunting kicked off today.
He told the group to "remember one thing: we are all taxpayers."
"That means we as taxpayers own our public land," Ryan said. "Hunters are the original conservationists. Bureaucrats more and more these days think that public lands have to be protected from hunters. I myself see it another way; I think hunters need to be protected by the bureaucrats."
The House Budget chairman was clearly comfortable talking to the group, mentioning that he takes his family hunting and telling the crowd that his 10-year-old daughter, Liza - for whom he bought a hunting outfit last week - would begin hunting this year.

Ryan: Gun Owners Should Fear an Obama Re-Election
Posted: at 1:11 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan courted the votes of hunters on Saturday in a speech to a sportsmens group, suggesting that President Obama would seek to strip gun owners of their rights by appointing judges hostile to a broad interpretation of the Second Amendment.
I shudder as a gun owner ... what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again? Ryan asked aloud during a speech to the National U.S. Sportsmens Alliances 16th Annual Save Our Heritage Banquet here.
The next president is going to pick a lot of judges. The next president will appoint a lot of different judges and these are lifetime appointments. If you want to make sure that judges respect our Second Amendment rights, you need a president who respects those rights as well, he said.
Ryan likened gun ownership to religious liberty, suggesting that the federal government had intruded on peoples First Amendment rights as well. He also stressed the importance of appointing people to government agencies who will respect the rights of hunting and fishing, and said that the widely criticized Fast and Furious gunwalking operation would never occur under a Romney-Ryan administration.
He also responded to claims by Vice President Joe Biden on Friday that he and Romney could raise taxes on seniors receiving Social Security. The Obama campaign has sought to argue that because various analyses of Romneys tax-cut plan suggest the tax burden would shift from wealthy to middle-class families, it is reasonable to assume that the shifted tax burden would fall on Social Security benefits.
But Romney has never said that he would raise taxes on Social Security benefits, and he has promised that he will not reduce Social Security benefits for current retirees. The Obama campaign has been making a similar argument using the Romney campaigns Medicare plan.
Ryan said his and Romneys plan makes no changes for those in or near retirement and that Biden himself had voted to raise taxes on seniors benefits by supporting President Clintons 1993 budget tax increases that Obama voted to keep in place three times, he noted.
Shame on the politician who wants to use this issue to try and scare seniors when those of us who are out there [are] trying to fix this problem for my generation and my kids generation and your kids, Ryan said.
Responding to Ryan's comments, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner noted that Republican Gov. John Kasich said in introducing the House Budget Committee chairman that Ohio has added 123,000 jobs since 2011 "and is moving forward. But rather than building on the progress we'vemade under President Obama, Mitt Romney and Congressman Ryan would take us back."
Ryans appearance before the group Saturday evening underscores his role in the campaign as an ambassador to the middle class who better understands some traditions, such as hunting, with which Romney has less experience. Ryan is a former chairman of the Congressional Sportsmens Caucus for four years, and lauds the values he and his wife Janna have taught their children during hunting trips.
