Charles powers Sun past Liberty in playoff opener
Posted: September 28, 2012 at 2:17 pm
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) -- Tina Charles collected her first WNBA MVP award, then showed why she deserved the honor.
Charles had 17 points and four blocks to power the Connecticut Sun to a 65-60 victory over the New York Liberty in their playoff opener on Thursday night.
''The day is going great,'' the third-year center said. ''I got a (personal) achievement, and we got the first playoff win. Now we have to build on that.''
Game 2 of the best-of-three Eastern Conference semifinal series is at the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday at 7 p.m.
It was the Sun's first playoff win since they beat the Liberty 73-70 on Sept. 20, 2008.
''I'm happy with the win,'' Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said. ''I'm happy with the effort. We need to play a lot better.''
Asjha Jones had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Connecticut (26-9), which is the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Kara Lawson added eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Cappie Pondexter had 14 points, six assists and four steals for the Liberty (15-20). Plenette Pierson finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Sun and Liberty were tied at 45 with over a minute left in the third quarter when Connecticut pulled away with a 12-0 run. It held New York scoreless for a 6 1/2-minute stretch that began late in the third quarter and extended into the fourth.
Renee Montgomery made two free throws early in the fourth quarter, then fed Mistie Mims for a layup. Jones continued Connecticut's run with a pull-up jumper.

DNA remains focus in Highway of Tears cases
Posted: at 1:14 pm
VANCOUVER - RCMP scientists will continue to resubmit DNA to Interpol after announcing this week the process confirmed a dead U.S. convict killed at least one of the 18 victims on B.C.'s so-called Highway of Tears, an investigator said Thursday.
Staff Sgt. Wayne Clary said samples of genetic material submitted to the international law enforcement agency have to meet standards, which could mean having to isolate the suspects DNA from other contaminants, including blood from the victim.
That was the case in victim Colleen MacMillens murder: her blood was mixed with that of her presumed killer, Bobby Jack Fowler. (Fowlers guilt is not proven in a court of law because of his passing in 2006 in an Oregon prison.)
A previous attempt five years ago to separate Fowlers blood was unsuccessful, but new technology made it possible this year. That meant the isolated Fowler DNA was now acceptable for comparison with international police records.
Were very cognizant of advances in DNA and we would resubmit when we can, Clary told QMI Agency. In particular, when there are older cases that have already gone through (our system) once.
The investigator said police have also traced four additional British Columbian male suspects -- two living and two dead -- related to the missing and murdered women.
One of the suspects continues to be sought in connection to Maureen Mosies death. The 33-year-old was last seen alive in Salmon Arm on May 8, 1981. The next day, her remains were located 100 kilometres west, near Kamloops.
Mounties still seek witnesses who saw a two-door compact car with an Alberta plate driven by a man with a dark beard.
We think whoever drove that car killed Maureen Mosie.
Though no names were released, Clary said the two dead suspects linked to two separate killings perished before the Highway of Tears task force launched in 2005.

Sabre Establishes “Passport to Freedom” as Part of Commitment to Fight Human Trafficking Worldwide
Posted: at 1:13 am
SOUTHLAKE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Sabre Holdings, a global travel technology company, today launched Passport to Freedom, its comprehensive initiative seeking to unite the travel and tourism industry in the fight against human trafficking. Announced by Sabre Holdings Chairman and CEO Sam Gilliland, actress and advocate Jada Pinkett Smith, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow, and Tekla Roberts, a human trafficking survivor and program advocate, the initiative aims to raise awareness about human trafficking issues; advocate for legislative change; and provide opportunities for leaders in government, travel and non-profit organizations to collaborate on an issue affecting up to 27 million people globally.
Sabre has a presence with all segments of the travel sector from agents and airlines to tour services and travelers, and everything in between, putting us in a unique position to act as a driving force in raising awareness for this cause, said Gilliland. Human trafficking impacts countries around the world, including every major city in the United States. Passport to Freedom is part of our effort to rally the travel and tourism industry to not only end these crimes, but to also help those who are affected rebuild their lives.
Passport to Freedom addresses these issues by focusing on three primary objectives: to educate, collaborate and advocate. The program will also include a long-term scholarship and employment program providing job training to human trafficking survivors for careers in the travel and tourism industry.
Additional elements include:
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Ray LaHood has launched an initiative to address the role of transportation in human trafficking. Under his direction, the Departmentis training 55,000 DOT employees in the U.S. and abroad. The Department is also working with the transportation industry to raise awareness about the issue.
We are working with all our modes of transportation to help stop the flow of human trafficking, but we cant do it alone, said Secretary LaHood. Raising awareness about human trafficking can save lives, if everyone gets involved. Public/private initiatives like the one Sabre is launching can make a real difference in ending this terrible crime.
Secretary LaHood sent a video message of support to attendees of a workshop Sabre hosted on Thursday to discuss and develop solutions to human trafficking.
Human trafficking is a $32 billion trade, making it one of the most lucrative, widespread and fastest-growing global crimes. The travel and tourism industry is often an unwilling and unknowing participant in these crimes as millions are trafficked within and across domestic and international borders and kept in hotels or other public housing for commercial sex or forced labor each year.
Actress and advocate Jada Pinkett Smith, who has testified before Congress appealing for federal funding to assist human trafficking victims, also took part in several events Sabre hosted on Thursday.

Freedom on the NET Status: Malaysia maintains ‘”Partly Free” status
Posted: at 1:13 am
September 28, 2012
http://www.malaysiakini.com (09-27-12)
Malaysia has fallen eight places in the Washington-based think tank Freedom Houses latest Freedom on the Net report, which measures Internet freedom in 47 countries.
This places Malaysia on the 23rd spot, in the same league as Libya and Jordon, and maintains its partly free label in the think tanks Freedom on the Net Status.
The ranking employed a demerit system (i.e. Zero being no obstacles to Internet freedom) to construct the rankings. This year, Malaysia picked up an additional two point and is now 43 of 100.
In the region, Malaysia (23rd) ranks behind the Philippines (7th place) and Indonesia (21st) but is ahead of Thailand (35th), Vietnam (40th) and Burma (41st).
One of the chief Freedom House complaints is the amendments to Section 114A of the Evidence Act 1950 which make intermediaries liable for content posted by anonymous users.
(This raises) concerns that it would damper free expression online and open the doors to selective, politically motivated prosecutions, read the report. Freedom House noted that the amendments were hurriedly rushed through passage and now allowed the presumption of guilt, shifting the burden of proof to the accused.
Evolving tactics of harassment
The report said although there were fewer defamation cases against bloggers and several earlier prosecutions had been discontinued, defamation cases against bloggers involving disproportionate request for damages threatened to chill online expression.

Today: Freedom’s Defense Fund Releases Ad in Support of Todd Akin
Posted: at 1:13 am
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Freedoms Defense Fund, an independent political organization dedicated to principles of limited government, today released an ad in support of Rep. Todd Akins bid to unseat Senator Clare McCaskill. The ad, entitled Lets Do the Math, calls out Claire McCaskill for her uniform support of Barack Obamas disastrous policies. It is part of a $250,000 independent expenditure aimed at making Todd Akin the next Missouri Senator.
Claire McCaskill votes with Barack Obama 98 percent of the time, the ad notes. McCaskill is a reliable ally in the liberal assault on free-market capitalism and traditional values.
The ad is part of a continuing commitment on the part of Freedoms Defense Fund to support candidates who have been abandoned by the mainstream. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has refused to fund Akins bid, even though polls demonstrate the race to be very winnable.
On the issues, Todd Akin is the right leader for Missouri, said Michael Centanni, Chairman of Freedoms Defense Fund. We know Missouri voters reject Barack Obama and Sen. McCaskills extreme vision for America, and we want to make sure they are informed.

Liberty Plaza: City leaders look for ways to end crime, vagrancy issues at park
Posted: at 1:13 am
. Families have been drawn there by performances put on by the Ann Arbor District Library.
But this urban park in downtown Ann Arbor has earned a reputation that contrasts sharply with images of people relaxing at a summertime concert and children enjoying a library program.
Public drinking, drug use and fights arent rare occurrences in the concrete park at the southwest corner of Division and Liberty streets. Set a few steps down from the sidewalk, the two-tiered park has gained a less-than-flattering reputation since it first opened to public use in 1978.
The park has off and on been a problem for years, said John Teeter, property manager at First Martin Corp., the company that built and still maintains the park. Its a wonderful park when theres programming. ... When theres legitimate users in the park visiting, its wonderful.
He pointed to the Thursday Sonic Lunch concerts, sponsored by Bank of Ann Arbor as an example of programming that works. But often, the park doesn't work well, he said.
When you have people drinking, doing drugs, defecating and urinating near buildings or harassing someone trying to eat lunch, its a detriment to the area, he added.
Teeter said Liberty Plaza has had cycles of criminal activities over the years, giving the place a reputation as a hangout for vagrants that may drive other residents away. But, those who use it have cultivated their own community. Many who regularly visit the park play chess, loan money to each other and engage in lively discussions.
Roughly 20 people milled about Liberty Plaza on a recent afternoon and nearly all of them greeted each other with smiles, handshakes and warm words. Some were quietly eating their lunch in the early afternoon sunshine while others skateboarded around benches and trees. The scene was a far cry from Teeters worst-case scenario of people being driven away by unruly park users.
People down here are cool, man, said Jacob Dorsten, a homeless man hanging out in the park. Ive never seen any trouble here.
A problem of design

Liberty Silver Doubles in Value and Trades over $20 Million Shares in September
Posted: at 1:12 am
PLANTATION, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Renowned and respected investment advisor and founder of Midas Letter (www.midalsletter.com), a subscriber-driven private investment strategy newsletter, James West, has recently reported his overview of the Trinity Silver Project, a Liberty Silver Corp. (LSL.TO) (OTCBB:LBSV) endeavor.
The Trinity Silver Project is located 25 miles northwest of Lovelock, Nevada (Pershing County) and shares its geographical location with major gold and silver producers including one of the largest silver mines in the United States, the Rochester silver mine owned by Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation, which produced 125 million ounces of silver from 1986 to 2010 and has an estimated 120 million silver ounces in reserves.
As reported by West at http://www.midasletter.com, In the month of September so far, the company has traded over 20 million shares and doubled in value. Silver itself has traded in a similar trajectory, increasing in value by 35% since mid-summer, and outperforming gold smartly. The most respected and experienced traders in precious metals fully expect the ratio of how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold to head towards 16:1 from its current level of over 50:1. That would imply a silver value of $110 per ounce.
If Liberty Silver shares continue to trade at such a high beta to the silver futures price, the premium being awarded Liberty Silver could be substantial, adds West.
Liberty Silver Corp is an advanced stage junior silver mining company focused on developing its flagship property the Trinity Silver Project comprised of 10,600 acres including 5,700 acres of fee land and 240 unpatented mining claims. The Trinity property, previously mined and operated by US Borax, produced 5 million ounces of silver from 1.1 million tons of ore from its open pit oxide resource from 1987 to 1989; mining ceased when sulfide mineralization was encountered in the bottom of the pit and metal prices were too low to support mining the sulfide resource.
Historical drilling and production data, recent surveys and drilling results, as well as independent research reveals the property has potential resources of approximately 120m silver equivalent ounces between the Trinity property and the adjacent Hi Ho silver property of which Liberty recently entered into a mineral rights agreement with.
West cites Liberty Silvers caliber of management and board of directors as a key to the projects success with leadership from Geoffrey Brown, Chairman & CEO, former head of private equity at Merrill Lynch Canada; Bill Tafuri, President, bringing 40 years of diverse mining and exploration experience with such companies as Getty Mining Co., Kennecott Corp. and Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp.; Paul Haggis, an icon in Canadian business circles as Chairman of Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd, C.A. Bancorp Inc., a Canadian merchant bank and alternative asset manager and Alberta Enterprise Corporation, a venture capital fund overseeing $100 million for early-stage ventures; and the backing of legendary entrepreneur Bobby Genovese, Chairman of BG Capital Group (a venture capital and private equity firm based in Barbados with offices throughout North America with assets of more than $200 million) as one of the biggest shareholders of Liberty Silver Corp. For more information on BG Capital Group visit http://www.bgcpapitalgroup.com.
James West is the portfolio advisor to the Midas Letter Opportunity Fund and an investment advisor to institutional investors and high net worth family offices with expertise in investing in commodities, real estate and energy, and providing access to early stage opportunities to public companies who explore for and produce such commodities. He has spent more than 20 years working in capacities such as corporate finance advisor, corporate development officer, investor relations officer, media relations and business development officer for companies involved in mining, oil and gas, alternative fuels, healthcare, internet technology, transportation, manufacturing, and housing construction. His website, http://www.midasletter.com, receives more than 30,000 unique visits per month.
