Freedom runs away from San Leandro

Senior Darrell Daniels scored three touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return to open the game, and junior running back Joe Mixon added three of his own to spearhead a Falcons 43-6 victory over San Leandro on Sept. 14.
I saw a big hole, Daniels said of the opening kickoff return. Everybody hit their blocks. I just hit the hole and saw daylight. We came to play as a team. Working week-by-week, day by day, were going to put up numbers like that every week.
A 7-0 lead in the games first 15 seconds is an electrifying start, but Freedom head coach Kevin Hartwig was nervous: the Falcons losses to Amador Valley and Franklin were marked by early TDs. Its good, but its hard, Hartwig said. In a way, its a letdown and it got us in two games. Tonight, we didnt do that. Its a learning process.
The Falcons few mistakes Friday didnt hurt them. On a point after touchdown, senior quarterback Dante Mayes muffed a snap but managed to beat the defense to the goal line for a two-point conversion. Later, Freedom jumped offside on the extra-point attempt following San Leandros only touchdown. The penalty gave the Pirates the idea to go for two, but the Falcons stuffed them.
Mixon and Daniels led the Falcons all night. Mixon carried the ball 11 times for 153 yards; Daniels three times for 97 yards to augment three catches for 45 yards plus that 90-yard kickoff return.
While a 2-2 start isnt what the Falcons envisioned before the season started, theyre confident about the rest of their games. I think were going to finish strong and go 8-2, Mixon said. I know for a fact that were going 8-2. We just have to keep going strong week by week.
Next up for Freedom is a trip to Castro Valley to take on the 2-2 Trojans, which downed Liberty 40-14 on Friday and then its on to Bay Valley Athletic League competition.
The night was just as successful for the Freedom JV squad, which beat San Leandro 53-12.

We are very proud to be part of this elite group of Cisco partners and NFF is ready to assist our customers with ISE services and implementation, said Glen Carter, NFFs Director of Technology Services.
"Security is the primary consideration to properly supporting any customer's initiative around BYOD. Technology solutions such as ISE provide the control mechanisms necessary to maintain the insight and threat mitigation needed to enable any open endpoint policy, said Glen Carter, Director of Technology Services. "NFF's engineering capabilities and expertise in identity solutions backed by Cisco's Advanced Technology Partner (ATP) accreditation enables our customers to proceed with confidence on BYOD initiatives."
A long-established partner with Cisco, in addition to the ISE, NFF holds two additional ATP designations in Data Center Unified Computing and TelePresence Video Express. Earlier in 2012, the technology integrator NFF received the Cisco Customer Satisfaction Award for the 16th time consecutively.

Liberty Tire Recycling Removes Hundreds of Used Tires from Infield of Kansas Speedway After Construction of Track's …
Posted: at 11:21 pm
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Liberty Tire Recycling, the premier provider of tire recycling services in North America, recently removed hundreds of used tires from the infield of Kansas Speedway that were left over after the construction of a new road course at the NASCAR facility owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation. The tires had been stockpiled for use as soft walls on the road course. All of the tires Liberty Tire Recycling collected will be used as material for eco-friendly products, including crumb rubber and industrial feedstock for molded products, tire-derived fuel for industrial kilns, mills and power plants, and rubber mulch for landscaping and playgrounds.

"We collect and recycle used tires from various sources throughout the country from racetracks to tire retailers to illegal dumps in order to create a new life for materials that would otherwise damage the environment," said Jeffrey Kendall, CEO of Liberty Tire Recycling. "We were happy to provide support to Kansas Speedway to ensure that leftover tires were disposed of properly and provide a beneficial use as sustainable raw material."
One use for recycled tire rubber that creates a natural connection between Liberty Tire Recycling and Kansas Speedway is rubberized asphalt. As a low-cost, high-performance alternative to conventional paving mixes, rubberized asphalt reduces dependency on oil and limits carbon dioxide emissions. In use for more than 40 years, rubberized asphalt has proven to lessen maintenance costs and provide a smoother, safer ride. Plus, recycled rubber provides a reliable and consistent supply of material.
"We like the idea of using rubberized asphalt in our parking lots and concourses, and we'll continue to look for ways to use it on our skid pads to develop a test area to see how it would perform on the track itself," said Bill Braniff, senior director of construction for ISC Design & Development, International Speedway Corporation's in-house design and construction group.
The group used state-of-the-art computer modeling to develop track geometry that features 18- to 20-degrees of variable banking in the turns. The previous banking at Kansas Speedway was 15-degree uniform banking in the turns. Construction crews removed the existing oval track asphalt pavement and re-graded the underlying soil to create the variable banking. The new road course features a layout that winds through the infield, portions of which were graded and paved as part of the road course development.
The renovation project will be completed in time for Kansas Speedway to host its annual "Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup" event, the Hollywood Casino 400, tentatively set for October 21, 2012.

Liberty Global’s $2.5B Telenet Deal Add to Europe Growth
Posted: at 11:21 pm
By Scott Moritz and Joseph de Weck - 2012-09-20T20:28:40Z
Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA) offered to buy the remaining 49.6 percent of Belgiums Telenet Group Holding NV (TNET) for 1.96 billion euros ($2.5 billion), allowing the John Malone- led cable company more access to Europes pay-TV growth.
Liberty Global, based in Englewood, Colorado, said today that Telenet investors will get 35 euros a share in cash, according to a statement. The offer is 13 percent higher than yesterdays closing price for Mechelen-based Telenets shares. A favorable financial market allowed Liberty to raise money for the transaction over the past month, Chief Executive Officer Michael Fries said at a New York investor conference.
The deal gives Liberty Global a bigger foothold in Europe, where demand for TV, Internet and phone services delivered over cable is increasing. It follows the companys acquisitions of German cable provider Kabel Baden-Wuerttemberg for 3.16 billion euros last year and its larger competitor, Unitymedia, for 3.5 billion euros.
The latest deal will allow Malone, Libertys chairman, to push for stronger collaboration and synergies with his other European operations, said Marc Hesselink, an analyst with ABN Amro Bank NV in Amsterdam. The premium he paid on the Telenet share is also not excessive, which makes it a good deal.
While Europe is Liberty Globals biggest market, the company also has assets in Latin America. Its European customers total 18.4 million. With Telenets 2.15 million cable-TV users, Belgium is Liberty Globals second-biggest market after Germany.
We are a bit of an oddball, Fries said in an interview. Everyones whining about Europe, but weve had really good success. We are in the right markets with the right products at a time when people need connectivity.
Demand for cable services in Europe is increasing, with customers migrating to digital connections from analog. Digital cable penetration among German households is projected to rise to 23.7 percent in 2016 from 11.6 percent in 2011, according to research firm IHS Screen Digest. Total TV, Internet and phone subscriptions with cable companies in the country are forecast to rise by 24 percent to 32 million in 2016.
The offer values Telenet at 5.6 times its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. That compares with a median multiple of 5.3 for 114 telecommunications deals in Western Europe in the past year.
This is a highly accretive deal for our shareholders and their shareholders, Fries said. Now we get access to 100 percent of the cash flow, whereas before we only got half of it.

Kanye West Really Did Meet With Ex-CIA Director
Posted: at 11:21 pm
Kanye West may have taken some poetic license with a reference on his latest record to former CIA director George Tenet, but Tenets camp confirms to Danger Room that the rap star did in fact meet with the one-time U.S. spy chief.
On Clique, a standout track from this weeks Kanye West Presents G.O.O.D. Music: Cruel Summer, Yeezy relates an anecdote so unexpected and specific that it had several listeners suspending disbelief about rapper boasts: Yeah, Im talking business, we talking CIA/ Im talking George Tenet, I seen him the other day/ He asked me about my Maybach, think he had the same/ Except mine tinted and his might have been rented.
Verdict: partly true. To adapt the chorus for a second, George Tenet really was, uh, interacting with the clique. There is some truth to that story, longtime Tenet spokesman Bill Harlow tells Danger Room. Thats a better track record than most rappers can claim and, for that matter, most CIA analysts.
Harlow explains that a few months ago, Tenet was leaving a business meeting in a New York City building when, unexpectedly, Kanye West entered. They bumped into each other, Harlow said, and someone in the various entourages introduced the rapper to the former intelligence chief, who left government service in 2004 after infamously vouching for the claim that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.
They chatted briefly, Harlow says. The next thing you know, its recorded history. This should add grist to the online conspiracy theory that Kanye is a member of the Illuminati.
Only one thing: There was no discussion of Maybachs, Harlow says. Tenet doesnt drive one rented, leased, owned or otherwise. (Notice, however, that Kanye doesnt claim Tenet has one; he merely speculates.)
Not that the ex-CIA directors crew has a problem with Kanyes characterization: I think its poetic license. Nor is Tenet inclined to fact-check a rap song. Its not his genre, Harlow continues. Hes more of a Bruce Springsteen guy.
Still, now Tenet is immortalized in pop culture as a baller, without any reference to Iraq or WMDs.

New, Compact Body Scanner Ready for Space Station
Posted: at 10:13 pm
Handheld "tricorders" from "Star Trek" remain just a science fiction fantasy for astronauts who need advanced medical care in space. But a new version of full-body scanning technology has the right size and power requirements to possibly fit aboard the International Space Station.
The smaller, cheaper version of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine could provide "slice" images of astronauts' bodies to improve studies of human health in space issues such as bone and muscle loss in low-gravity environments or the effects of deep-space radiation. Space explorers living on moon bases or traveling to Mars could also benefit from having such medical technology available during missions lasting for months or years.
"I would like to build a facility-class, whole-body-sized MRI," said Gordon Sarty, acting chairman of the biomedical engineering division at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. "Such a project would require an agreement between the ISS space agencies."
The compact MRI could weigh less than a ton one-twentieth of a ton for a smaller version that scans arms and legs and would require far less power than traditional MRI. Costs for the full-body MRI could drop from $2 million to as low as $200,000.
Sarty presented his team's compact MRI technology at AIAA Space 2012, a conference organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, on Sept. 13. He hopes to win funding from the Canadian Space Agency to launch the machine to the space station around 2020.
MRI machines work by using radiofrequency coils to broadcast signals to the human body and receive return signals to build an image of the body's innards. Gradient coils control the machine's magnetic field to produce the precise "slice" images of certain parts of the body.
But MRI technology has limits that would make it both difficult and risky to operate on the space station. Typical MRI machines weigh about 11 tons or more because they rely upon heavy superconducting magnets cooled by liquid helium, and also create stray magnetic fields that could interfere with the space station's operations. Another problem comes from the MRI gradient coils' need to consume huge amounts of power in short bursts. [8 Surprising High-Tech Uses for Helium]
"These characteristics make it impractical and potentially dangerous to take a conventional MRI into space," Sarty told InnovationNewsDaily.
Compact MRI uses two different technologies to get around such problems. First, it uses a permanent Halbach magnet that is lighter than the superconducting magnet and does not create stray magnetic fields outside the magnet. Second, the compact MRI eliminates the power-hungry gradient coils by using Transmit Array Spatial Encoding (TRASE) that encodes images through the radiofrequency coil alone.
The smaller MRI technology has many uses far beyond space it could improve overall medical care on Earth by making the cheaper machines available around the world. Its smaller size could also lead to easier use of MRIs in battlefield hospitals or distant parts of the world with limited space and power.

DNA evidence links Vallejo man to January stabbing in SLO, police say
Posted: at 10:13 pm
Using DNA matches off a knife, San Luis Obispo police detectives were able to identify a suspect in an attempted murder case, and then arrested a Vallejo man for the alleged crime.
In a news release issued Thursday, police Lt. Jeff Smith said Austin Sarna, 21, was arrested Wednesday in Vallejo after the DNA evidence linked him to an attack that occurred in January.
Sarna was taken into custody without incident, and was transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he remains on a no-bail warrant.
Smith said that at 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 20, police were called to the intersection of Broad and Monterey streets on the report of a man who had been stabbed and was bleeding profusely from his arm.
Police learned that several men got into an altercation with two or more others. Trevor Tice, 27, of Atascadero, was stabbed multiple times in the back and arm. Zachary Lerno, 26, was stabbed once in the head.
"During the investigation there were limited details regarding the suspect due to a lack of witnesses and levels of intoxication," Smith said. But the knife used in the attack was found by officers and taken as evidence.
The suspected weapon was sent to a state crime lab for analysis. One DNA sample matched Tice; another matched Sarna. Investigators then contacted the two male victims and witnesses, who identified Sarna as one of the men in the altercation.
