Rodriguez's Two Homers Lead Freedom to Victory

Posted: August 23, 2012 at 7:21 am

August 22, 2012 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom Florence, KY-Eddie Rodriguez launched two solo homeruns on Wednesday night leading the Florence Freedom(48-38) past the Joliet Slammers(35-51) 6-4. It was the Freedom's fourth straight win as they trail the wild card race by 1.5 games with ten games to play. Rodriguez led the Freedom going 3-4 with 3 RBI.

The Slammers jumped out quickly on Freedom starter Andy Clark. Patrick Norris drove the first pitch of the game over the right center field wall to give Joliet a 1-0 lead. The Freedom's Rodriguez came back in the 2nd inning and took Joliet starter Jacob Sanchez deep on just one pitch to tie the game. It was his 11th of the season. With the Freedom trailing 2-1 in the 3rd, Pierre LePage led off the inning with a single to right field. Then David Harris doubled to right field. The Slammers right fielder David Christensen was charged with a throwing error on his throw to second base which allowed LePage to score from third and tie the game at 2-2. Junior Arrojo then got down a perfectly executed bunt up the third base line advancing Harris to third. Peter Fatse then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Harris to put the Freedom ahead 3-2. With Rodriguez at the plate, Arrojo stole his 27th base of the season to get into scoring position. Rodriguez then drove him in on an RBI single to give Florence a 4-2 lead.

The Slammers came back in the 7th. Brennan Flick walked back to back hitters to start the inning. After a double steal by Christensen and Kyle Maunus, Andrew Brauer singled back up the middle against Matt Kline(2-3) scoring both runners and tying the game at 4-4. Kline then retired the next three batters to end the inning.

The Freedom went back to work in their 7th against Ray Cotillla(0-2). There were two outs in the inning when the Freedom started their rally. Stephen Cardullo singled, stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. LePage then ripped a single into left field to break the tie and give the Freedom a 5-4 lead. The Freedom extended the lead to 6-4 in the 8th on Rodriguez's second homer of the night and his 12th of the season. It was also his 5th homerun over the last four games.

Jorge Marban came on in the 9th and nailed down his 11th save of the season. Kline recorded his second straight win out of the bullpen in as many nights.

The Freedom can sweep Joliet Thursday night as their three game series concludes. Joliet will feature RHP Tommy Mendoza(4-5, 4.40) as the Freedom will counter with RHP Brad Allen(1-1, 1.54). The game can be heard starting at 6:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.

Freedom of Movement in a World of Invisible Borders

Posted: at 7:21 am

Reckoning today from Porto, Portugal...

"Shall we drive up to Braga tomorrow?" asked our wanderlusting travel companion (and fianc), Anya.

Liberty cannot exist unless certain preconditions are present...and others absent. Freedom of movement is a rather obvious one...the opposite of captivity. Freedom demands an absence of bars and jail cells.

Indeed, it would be a strange brand of freedom where one had to ask permission to go (or to "be") here or there. Likewise, it would be a strange prison where inmates were free to "come and go as they please."

Along with freedom of association and freedom of speech, freedom of movement seems rather central to the idea of liberty.

But let's imagine for a second that, instead of driving to Braga, Anya had suggested flying to, say, Beirut...or Bucharest...or even Brasilia? (These are not infrequent suggestions, by the way.)

Your Australian-born editor needs a visa to visit these places...and many, many more locales besides. Our freedom of movement is, therefore, compromised. It is seen by The State as something "to be granted," as opposed to unalienable.

Even for Hong Kong, a destination which makes a habit of ranking among the "freest places on earth" on lists that monitor such things (here's one), individuals who happened to have been born on Terra Australis, through no fault of their own, are required to obtain a visa if they wish to "work, study, get trained, establish or join in any business or to take up residence." So say the agencies that oversee such things.

In fact, your antipodean editor would have considerable difficulty just leaving this tiny country were his papers not "in order." Likewise if he stayed too long. We need a valid passport to sit in a cafe in France or to sip a port in Porto...a permission book to move over imagined lines in the sand.

Odd, isn't it, what passes for freedom these days.

Liberty-Mercury Preview

In the city where she played high school ball, Cappie Pondexter helped the New York Liberty boost their playoff hopes in their last game.

The league's second-highest scorer will try to deliver again in the place where she started her WNBA career.

Pondexter and the Liberty look to extend the Phoenix Mercury's team-record losing streak to nine Thursday night when the clubs meet for the first time in 2012.

Loser of four of five heading into Tuesday's game at Chicago, New York (8-13) won 77-67 to move within one-half game of the Sky for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Pondexter, the first two-time Ms. Illinois basketball while at Marshall High School, scored 25 points to bump her average to 20.3.

"Obviously it's important because you have a buildup of excitement from being home, but more importantly we needed this win to inch closer to the playoffs,'' she said after New York improved to 1-1 on its five-game trip.

Pondexter, who won WNBA titles with the Mercury in 2007 and 2009, returns to Phoenix for the third time since being dealt to New York in a three-team swap in 2010 that brought Candice Dupree to the Mercury.

In New York's last game in the desert, Pondexter scored 17 of her 25 points in the final 6:32 of a 74-70 victory Aug. 23.

It was a far better result than in her first trip to Phoenix as a visiting player, as she was ejected in the third quarter of a 97-82 loss July 3, 2010, for smacking Penny Taylor in the face on a layup attempt.

The Mercury (4-17) have been dealing with plenty of frustration as they've gone winless since June 29 and are one game ahead of Tulsa - owner of the league's worst record.

All Guns Should Be Legal

Posted: at 10:17 pm

I had to respond to the Aug. 1 letter Modest Restrictions Dont Weaken Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment does notsaya well regulated state Militia; it says a well regulated Militia, which would be made up of average, everydaycitizens. The National Guard and the Coast Guard are both controlled by the government.

One only has to read what our Founding Fathers have to say about the Second Amendment to understand its intent. To quote Thomas Jefferson, The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. Based on the intent of the Second Amendment, any restriction on gun ownership is a violation of our constitutional rights. We should have the right to own any gun or weapon available.

Duane Hartgrove Columbia

Common Sense Needed in Gun Debate

Recently, The State newspaper printed a collection of pro-gun/pro-NRA-leaning letters to the editor. These letters condemned those who didnt agree with them, implying that those who disagree are crazy, stupid, ignorant, misinformed and/or dangerous. One writer even promoted the ownership and personal use of AK-47s.

There are many variations among those who believe that enforcing the existing gun laws is just not enough (though this enforcement is sincerely needed). Personally, I wonder why anyone needs to own semi-automatic weapons, automatic weapons or high-volume clips. These weapons and ammunition clips are intended for use by law enforcement and the military; their only hunting use is to kill multiple beings as quickly as possible. They are destructive and impossible to use for hunting.

My view is that there is nothing wrong with people owning long guns for hunting; handguns for personal safety; and non-multiple shot clips, provided that these owners take the necessary safety precautions. Along with gun ownership comes the requirement to safely secure the weapons and ammunition from those who are too young or not trained to understand the proper handling and use of these weapons.

Not all gun situations would be prevented or minimized by the addition of more people having more guns. In cases where homeowners with guns confront perpetrators, perpetrators often prevail because they have more training, are more adept or are quicker and calmer during the altercation than the gun owner.

Those victims who are surprised by a perpetrator cant react quickly enough to provide their own defense. For example, the recent Colorado massacre might have been made more severe by introducing more flying bullets into a dark, chaotic situation. Perhaps a trained person with a gun who had a clear, close and undetected position might have lowered the intensity and length of the incident, but even this person could not have prevented it.

Pondexter, Pierson lead Liberty past Sky

Posted: at 12:15 pm

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) -- Cappie Pondexter scored 25 points and Plenette Pierson added 21 as the New York Liberty beat the Chicago Sky 77-67 Tuesday night.

The Liberty (8-13) saw an 18-point second half lead trimmed to six early in the fourth quarter, then rebuilt a double-digit advantage and maintained it the rest of the way. New York pulled one-half game behind Chicago for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

''The team we were competing for the playoff spot is Chicago,'' Liberty coach John Whisenant said. ''So getting a win here was very important to us, trying to claw our way back into the playoff race.''

Sylvia Fowles scored 18 points, Shay Murphy had 16 and Epiphanny Prince added 10 for the Sky (8-12), who lost their seventh straight and 11th in 12.

Prince, playing in her third game since returning from a foot injury, was carried off the court with 4:51 to play after rolling her right ankle. She didn't return, but was seen standing courtside through the final minutes.

Fowles and Cash had six points apiece as Chicago led for all but the opening seconds on the way to a 21-16 after one quarter. Pierson paced New York with eight points.

Pondexter scored back-to-back buckets over a 21-second span late in the second quarter to give the Liberty their first lead since the opening minute. It was part of an 13-0 run that helped New York to a 40-32 halftime lead. Pondexter, who grew up in Chicago, had eight points in the period.

''Obviously it's important because you have a buildup of excitement from being home, but more importantly we needed this win to inch closer to the playoffs,'' she said.

The Liberty more than doubled the lead in the third quarter behind 12 points from Pondexter. New York led 61-43 with 1:23 remaining before Chicago pulled within 12 entering the final period.

''We have to put together longer stretches of defense,'' Sky coach Pokey Chatman said. ''You know what New York is going to bring. It starts with Cappie (Pondexter). She is the head of the snake and we didn't do a very good job of cutting that off. Plenette (Pierson) is back and healthy. They made plays.''

Liberty Silver Extends Offer for Sennen Resources

Posted: at 12:15 pm

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 21, 2012) - Liberty Silver Corp. (LSL.TO)(LBSV) announced today that it is extending its offer for all the issued and outstanding common shares of Sennen Resources Ltd. until 9 p.m. Toronto time on Monday, September 10, 2012.

"We remain confident that tendering to our offer represents the best value for Sennen shareholders rather than maintaining Sennen's status quo", Geoff Browne, Liberty Silver's chairman and chief executive officer said. "Sennen's board formed a special committee and hired financial and legal advisers more than a month ago to examine our offer. The special committee has yet to come up with a superior - or indeed, any - alternative proposal."

Under Liberty Silver's offer, Sennen shareholders will receive 0.28 of a Liberty Silver common share for each Sennen common share. The exchange ratio, at the time the offer was made, represented an implied price of $0.20 per Sennen share.

The offer represents a premium of 47.3% to the 20-day volume weighted average trading price ended July 13, 2012, being $0.135. This is also higher than the 34.8% average take-over bid premium paid for mining companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange over the past 12 months. The offer is valued at approximately $13.36 million, an amount that is expected to exceed Sennen's net cash reserves when the proposed transaction closes.

Mr. Browne added: "The combination of Sennen's cash resources and Liberty Silver's skilled management team and prudent risk-mitigation strategy will enable us to advance the Trinity Silver project, as well as identify other low-risk opportunities to the benefit of shareholders of both our companies.

"With the recent acquisition of the Hi Ho properties, we have met yet another milestone. As promised, we have added significant upside to our established resource, moved very close to fulfilling our earn-in requirements, and further de-risked the project. We are now planning the best path towards re-starting production."

Other benefits of Liberty Silver's offer include:

Setting the Record Straight

Liberty Silver also wishes to correct misleading allegations contained in a press release issued by Sennen on August 20, 2012.

"Our directors have significant skin in the game, a clear indication of their confidence in Liberty Silver's business strategy and in Trinity Silver's bright prospects", Mr. Browne said.

Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – shortlist announced

Posted: August 21, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Amnesty International today announced the shortlist for its annual Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, now in its ninth year, is presented in association with FEST magazine. This year saw a record number of entries, with 112 productions nominated.

The award, given to an outstanding play carrying a human rights message, will be presented on Thursday 23 August at an afternoon reception (for invitees/media only, details below).

The short listed productions are:

Shabnum Mustapha, Amnesty International's Scotland Director, said:

This has been another record-breaking year for the Freedom of Expression Award and it is extremely heartening to see so many productions tackling so many different human rights themes at the Edinburgh Fringe.

"For the last nine years, the Freedom of Expression Award has recognised productions which are both outstanding in their own right - and have the power to communicate, inform, inspire and challenge our perceptions about human rights. This year is no exception and the fact that we have six productions on the short list acknowledges the incredibly high calibre of performances which we have seen during the judging process."

Neil Cooper, Writer and Critic for The Herald and one of the award's judges, said:

"The fact that there are six so very different works in the short list for this year's Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award speaks volumes about the range of concerns there are among artists taking part in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This isn't tokenism, however. Every production named on the short list isn't there because they tick the right boxes or are saying the right things.

Of course, what these productions are saying is important, but it is how they're doing it that is so vital, and makes for such a rich set of artistic experiences that may change the world yet."

First Liberty Power Corp. Property and Strategic Focus Update

Posted: at 6:12 pm

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --First Liberty Power Corp. (FLPC) (the "Company") is pleased to announce an update on the Company's properties, and also our expanded plan for the exploration, development, mining and refining of strategic industrial metals in the USA.

Currently, we have a 95% option interest in two lithium brine properties; these properties are in a stage of development ranging from intermediate to advanced exploration with an ultimate goal to extract and refine Lithium brine. This type of deposit is globally recognized as the most economic and productive means of producing lithium. Lithium and its compounds have several fundamental commercial applications, including heat-resistant glass and ceramics, greases, high strength-to-weight alloys, pharmaceuticals, thermoplastic, air treatment, and, most importantly for growth, lithium ion batteries.

Our first property, Lida Valley with 58 Placer Claims / 9,280 acres, has completed three exploration stages to date. We have identified a deep-seated basin structure with high potential lithium enrichment, together with conductive zones which are an indicator of lithium-bearing brines. Our latest acquisition, Smoky Valley with 70 Placer Claims / 11,200 acres, has two exploration stages complete, with basin structure already demonstrated, and geo-magnetics planned through 2012. Both properties are in close proximity to the only US based producing lithium operation - Chemetall Foote which has been producing for over 40 years at a rate of approximately 5,000 LCE tonnes per year. Once the exploration stages on the properties are successfully completed and the properties are proven for production, both operations will be consolidated and the drill program to prove lithium brine presence will begin. First Liberty will work to implement a production plan immediately thereafter.

First Liberty has begun to expand its scope beyond lithium into other minerals of critical strategic importance. As part of our expanded strategic focus, one of First Liberty's core objectives is to ensure a strong US domestic supply of mineral elements that are critical to current and emerging technologies. It is widely recognized that the United States must work to increase the domestic supply of several critical elements to ensure security, particularly in alternative energy. These elements include Vanadium, Uranium, Antimony, Graphite, Tin, Lead, and certain Rare Earth and Platinum Metal Group elements. With this in mind, we are seeking to complement our current mid and long-term exploration programs with near term production opportunities to meet this high demand.

CEO Don Nicholson emphasized in a statement, "As the Company moves into a high growth phase, I would like to stress the importance of our two Lithium brine properties for our mid-term production plans, and we are pleased that they are advancing successfully through the resource verification stages. Furthermore, we are working diligently on investigating and evaluating properties that contain the critical elements we see as being extremely important for our further growth. The leadership of this Company has targeted 2012 as a priority period to acquire near and mid-term production properties that have a benchmark of delivering high-percentage returns to our investors and shareholders."

About UsFirst Liberty is a Nevada based mineral exploration company with a focus on the exploration, development, mining and refining of strategic industrial metals in the USA. With a primary focus on lithium exploration, it is our vision to also significantly contribute towards ensuring a domestic supply of those mineral elements that are critical to current and emerging technologies. We will continue assembling a portfolio of properties and interests in several key areas, ranging in developmental to advanced stage exploration to production ready.

Catawba County Board of Commissioners approves speech ordinance

Posted: at 6:10 pm

NEWTON, NC County property can now be used to express free speech.

Catawba County Board of Commissioners on Monday night unanimously approved an amended ordinance that allows free speech on county property but it also sets conditions.

County Attorney Debra Bechtel told commissioners that when a group came to the county in May wanting to express their freedom of speech, county officials first said no because its ordinance required a 14-day notice. The 14-day notice requirement had been in place since the mid -1990s.

After reconsidering the request, county officials changed their minds and allowed the group to use the Justice Center grounds to protest an anti-gay rights sermon that Providence Road Baptist Church Pastor Charles L. Worley gave on Mothers Day.

But county staff started reviewing the policy and reworked the ordinance to allow county property to be used for free speech expression.

On Monday, Commissioner Barbara Beatty asked Bechtel if the county can require groups to get insurance coverage before using county property for free speech events.

Bechtel said she reviewed numerous court cases and the US Supreme Court ruled that requiring insurance puts a chilling effect on free speech.

The ordinance does require:
