Os Guinness, critic, international speaker and author, speaks at Lausanne III in Cape Town on Monday, Oct. 18, 2010.

August 13, 2012|8:44 am

Guinness was born in China to medical missionaries and raised in England. He holds a doctorate degree from Oriel College, Oxford, has been a guest scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies and the Brooking's Institution, and is the author of over 25 books.

In an interview with The Christian Post, Guinness talks about his new book, immigration, the role of religion in a free society, "ordered liberty," and why the tea party and Occupy Wall Street movements have more in common than you might think.

The following is an edited transcript of that interview:

CP: What was your main purpose for writing this book?

Guinness: I think the deepest issue in America is the crisis of freedom. I'm a strong believer in St. Augustine's idea that you judge a nation by what it loves supremely. And there's no question that, over many centuries, what Americans love supremely is freedom. So I think you can judge the health of a nation by the health of freedoms today.

Liberty Rallies To Stay Alive In Legion Regional

Posted: Aug. 13, 2012 | 2:02 a.m. Updated: Aug. 13, 2012 | 8:15 a.m.

Liberty's American Legion baseball team was down to its final three outs and staring at elimination Sunday.

No problem.

The Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, capped by Griffin Kelly's two-out, two-run double to right-center field for an 8-7 victory over Lakewood (Calif.) in the Legion Western Regional at Fairfield, Calif.

"It was a great feeling, one of those things just like the state title game," said Liberty coach Mike Eshragh, whose team rallied for a 4-3 win over Gorman in the state final. "We told these kids to believe again. We just needed to get base runners on and get that timely hit."

Kelly's timely hit ended a 14-pitch at-bat as the Patriots staved off elimination to reach the final day of the tournament.

Liberty (29-9) will play Fairfield (Calif.) at 4 p.m. today, with the winner meeting Lakewood in the final at 7:30 p.m. The regional champion advances to the Legion World Series at Shelby, N.C.

Liberty's Marcos Rivera singled home Jay Martz before Jesse Keiser's sacrifice fly scored Michael Vargas to pull Liberty within 7-6 in the ninth.

Rivera was called out at third for the second out of the inning as Christopher Bradford reached on a fielder's choice. Kelly's double then plated Bradford and Daniel Skelly to end the game.

Skelly went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Keiser drove in two runs, and Vargas was 2-for-2 and scored twice.

Liberty Pounds Out 20 Hits, Stays Alive At Legion Regional

Posted: at 4:16 am

Posted: Aug. 12, 2012 | 2:02 a.m.

After watching his team strike out 13 times in a loss Friday night, Liberty baseball coach Mike Eshragh wanted to see his players execute better at the plate Saturday.

The Patriots did that, and then some.

Liberty pounded out 20 hits on its way to a 23-9, seven-inning victory over Albuquerque (N.M.) to stave off elimination in the American Legion Western Regional at Fairfield, Calif.

"We struck out 13 times at the plate (Friday) night. That doesn't happen to us," Eshragh said of his team's 9-6 loss to Fairfield. "Responding today with a good offensive output shows these kids know how to make adjustments quickly. It was good to bounce back."

Liberty (28-9) is one of four teams remaining in the double-elimination regional. The Patriots will play Lakewood (Calif.) at 3:30 p.m. today.

The Patriots led 9-0 after two innings, but Albuquerque scored three runs in the fifth to pull within 13-7. But Liberty scored 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to put the run rule into effect.

Liberty's Jay Martz went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs, and Michael Vargas was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Jesse Keiser went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs for Liberty. Teammates Daniel Skelly, Nate Bennett and Marcos Rivera added two hits each. Skelly drove in four runs and Bennett three.

"We got to the field a little bit earlier today and had a little bit extra cage time," Eshragh said. "The players knew what was on the table, and we responded right away."

Freedom or Sin, “the new barbarians”: Pussy Riot sparked a toothache from Ministers in Germany

Posted: August 12, 2012 at 3:11 am

The State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany Cornelia Pieper aching teeth. She said in the latest interview of the German radio station Deutsche Welle. This problem is exacerbated by the Minister was in Russia over the members of punk band Pussy Riot.

In an interview with Piper said literally the following: Yes, just now we have seen Court in Russia over the girls from punk band. They do not actually committed any crimes, they rightly expressed what everyone knows: in Russia there is no freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of art and culture. I have such a development in Russia is causing toothache. This is unacceptable .

Probably from the point of view of the Minister of culture in Germany is all right if the graduates of German universities, undergraduate liberal arts, homegrown philosophers can seamlessly play the accordion and singing songs in the mosques of Munich Tyrol or dance Cancan in Hamburgs kirches. But even with the freedom of art and culture in this country? Let the Piper tries to sing in the Philharmonic Hall, the stadium or, in extreme cases, in the nearest pub, the first two verses For the Germans (Deutschland ber alles)-anthem of modern Germany. By the way, the official ban on this no. However, with the post of Minister, it would have to, of course, to say goodbye. Or let it tries in any public place to execute the Horst Wessel (irreproachable from the point of view of the musical harmonies work). Immediately- 86a of the German Penal Code! And what will we, freedom of scientific research in the country on the subject of Holocaust revisionism? Therefore, the word culture means that the German Minister somehow with a Pussy Riot clue-frame, leaving behind that simply cannot be or indecent. Sometimes the State is beyond repair, they resemble or refer to. All this is called cultural policy.

Minister Pieper thinks about Russia-old stereotypes of their world. With great certainty we can say that even great-grandfather Pieper self-righteously believed that in the East, in Russia, there is no freedom of expression or freedom of culture and art. Thought and Grandpa Pieper, performing a civilizational mission, somewhere in the trenches of Stalingrad. Thats why something just art and culture in Russia despite all Piperam then were. Yes, another level! Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy This list, great-granddaughter of the Russian language, which of course, can continue because it is competent in this matter. And were they, i.e., culture and art, because both times and there were some tradition, religion and the right to crisp cultural framework that you can do and what-not. Here are some in modern Russia and Maraty Gelmany (the name of the Legion), this framework is overcome and destroy it. But without them, as it turns out, disappear and the culture, and the arts.

Cornelia Pieper-Liberal, a member of the free democratic party of Germany (Fdp). She is fluent in English and follows developments in Russia, as it States on the originals. She believes that cultural policy is in fact and assimilation of basic values . In a democratic society should be more freedom, she added. Under the latter, as the interview, she understood the dances and scrap sin the new barbarians in churches and museums among the ruins of a great culture.

Since June, 2012 to June 2013, the cultural Year in Russia is Germany under the slogan Germany and Russia: building the future together. The German Liberals in the Government of Angela Merkel, as it turns out now, aching teeth. They are sore because Russia. Then liberals suffer migraines because of the Ukraine, which wants to, but not the EU. They constantly dreaming that the EU does not want to and cannot, and from this they again chronic insomnia. All these and many other invented chronic internal and external diseases at the party leadership and the Party of free Democrats in 2013, the 5% barrier to overcome is not getting to the Bundestag. So stop the trial in Moscow, punk rock girl, ease the suffering of the German Minister-liberal! Because she is so afraid of dentistry

The Olympics Finally Have A Purpose: Spice Girls Spotted Practicing for the Closing Ceremonies [London Olympics]

Posted: at 3:11 am

Photographs leaked Friday of the Spice Girls rehearsing for the Olympics, finally confirming rumors that the group will perform in London's closing salute to the Illuminati.

Though there's been speculation that the Spice Girls would appear in the show for some time now, London Olympics organizers have remained notoriously secretive about the details of the event, preferring everyone be surprised by how disappointed they are when they watch it.

The group was snapped rehearsing at a Ford car plant in East London. Judging by the pictures, much of the routine consists of the girls clutching nervously to safety railings as they stand on top of bedazzled London taxicabs.

Earlier this year, Mel C. (Trackpants Spice) let organizers know there would be hell to pay if the theme of the London Olympics was not "People of the World: Spice Up Your Life":

I'd be really upset if the Spice Girls weren't included in the Olympics, whether it be the opening or closing ceremonies or any other playlists, because I think we absolutely represented Britain in the 90sI think it would be a real shame if we weren't acknowledged in some way at the Olympics.

Indeed, many people had never heard of Great Britain until 1996, when the Spice Girls' first single Wannabe debuted.

However, in spite of Mel C's unspoken threats, there were rumors that Victoria Beckham (Superfluous Spice) might squash reunion plans by refusing to participate. She certainly looked miserable and alone at a group photocall in June.

While Beckham was easily the least popular member of the group in its heyday, she's since become far and away its most famous, as she continues to become richer simply by virtue of already being rich.

Victoria Beckham is often featured prominently in group lineups; Victoria Adams was normally tucked away in the back, behind a stone column, in a different building.

In response to criticism that she was a no-fun sourpuss, Beckham said in a radio interview:
