Democrats Consider Officially Supporting Internet Freedom; GOP to 'Discuss' Issue

Posted: August 15, 2012 at 9:14 pm

In an attempt to woo so-called "Internet voters," both the Republican and Democratic parties are considering adopting official positions supporting a free and open Internet in their upcoming party platforms at their respective conventions, according to sources familiar with party platform drafting.

Earlier this year, Internet users organized massive online protests of several Congressional bills, such as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which critics said would have censored certain webpages and CISPA, a cybersecurity act that may have allowed companies to share user data with the federal government. Prominent sites such as Reddit and Wikipedia went dark on January 18 to protest SOPA, which may have shown lawmakers that Internet users would fight back against legislation they thought would hinder a "free and open" Internet.

Lawmakers "were woken up by the blackout, it was a real gamechanger for them," says Rainey Reitman, activism director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fights for digital freedom. "I think that politicians are definitely starting to court the Internet vote," she adds.

Organizations such as the EFF and Demand Progress, a grassroots group fighting for Internet freedom, are beginning to gain traction with those in Washington as both parties consider taking official stances on the issue.

Kirsten Kukowski, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, said that Internet freedom and net neutrality will be among the issues discussed as the RNC decides on its official platform before this month's convention. And a source involved with drafting the Democratic National Committee platform says that early drafts included language that "advocated Internet freedom globally." The source couldn't confirm if the provision made it into the final platform.

"We heard from many people who care very passionately about a free and open Internet," he says, and that input from Internet freedom activists caused drafters to "put tougher language" in the platform.

Both Republicans and Democrats are in a race to capture the Internet's voting power, but if campaign donations are anything to go by, Republicans seem to have a slight lead. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, 54 percent of the $4 million that Silicon Valley-based PACs have donated have gone to Republican causes and candidates. Companies that have given more to GOP PACs include Intel, Microsoft and Facebook, while Google and Oracle have given more money to Democrats.

David Segal, head of Demand Progress, which just launched a campaign to ask both RNC and DNC officials to include Internet freedom in their party platforms, says his organization has been "talking to people on both sides" about the issue.

Rights and freedom — Lim Mun Fah

Posted: at 9:14 pm

AUG 15 Media practitioners are well aware that there is no government that does not wish to suppress freedom of the press and freedom of speech in the world. And there is no political party that does not wish to manipulate the media and public opinion.

You might have heard this clich a thousand times over, but I still have to mention it here. That is, there is no absolute freedom in the world, but only relative freedom.

If you understand the above-mentioned reality, you will then find it not difficult to understand why governments around the world always introduce laws to restrict freedom of the press and freedom of speech.

Originally, the formulation and adoption of any statutes in democratic countries should consider the following points:

1. Is it necessary?

2. Is it reasonable?

3. Is it urgent?

4. Have adequate consultation, discussion and debate sessions been conducted?

The answers are not absolute for the same questions.

It depends on your viewpoint and what stand you take. Take Section 114A of the Evidence Act for example; it is definitely necessary, urgent and reasonable in the eyes of the ruling coalition.

Hoy set for Freedom of Edinburgh

Posted: at 9:14 pm

15 August 2012 Last updated at 15:59 ET

Sir Chris Hoy is set to be awarded the Freedom of Edinburgh if councillors vote to approve the honour next week.

Edinburgh's Lord Provost also vowed the city would welcome home Sir Chris and other Olympic heroes despite official celebrations being in Glasgow.

It comes after SportScotland confirmed the official victory parade for Scotland's Olympians will be held in Glasgow on Friday 14 September.

Scottish athletes won a record 13 medals at the London Games.

Lord Provost of Edinburgh Donald Wilson said the capital would host its own parade for Edinburgh Olympians.

Mr Wilson said: "While I am naturally disappointed the parade for our Olympians and Paralympians will not be held in the nation's capital, I am pleased that their fantastic achievements are being celebrated.

"This does not affect Edinburgh's intention to welcome our own local Olympians and Paralympians to their home city and to show them how proud we are of their achievements."

Sir Chris won two gold medals at the Games in London to become Britain's most successful Olympian.

Councillor Steve Cardownie added: "There is no higher - or more fitting - recognition for Sir Chris than to offer him the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh."

Freedom Pass trio ride 381st bus

Posted: at 9:14 pm

15 August 2012 Last updated at 01:01 ET By Josephine McDermott BBC News, London

A Freedom Pass entitles Londoners to free travel from the age of 62. But few exploit the potential of free travel across the entire capital, from Hillingdon to Havering, Barnet to Bromley, quite like three retired ladies.

They have set themselves the challenge of travelling on every bus route in London from end to end and blogging about it in numerical order.

Later, the self-styled "ladies who bus", Jo Hunt, 68, from Camden, north London, Mary Rees, 68, from Peckham, south London, and Linda Smither, 65, from Forest Hill, south-east London, will take the 381 bus which passes the Freedom Pass office.

They started their challenge in March 2009 and aim to complete every journey up to the number 549, plus the 600 routes which are not school buses.

Mrs Hunt, a former History teacher at Watford Girls' School, said: "It was probably my idea. I'm not a Londoner like the other two and I was completely gobsmacked how far the buses go.

"It's amazing how lovely they are."

She said she had long been intrigued by destinations such as Creekmouth and Ponders End and the question: "What would happen if you didn't get off the bus?"

But she added: "We could still be doing this on our zimmer frames."

Before they retired Mrs Smither, Mrs Hunt's sister-in-law, was a social worker in Wandsworth and Lewisham and Mrs Rees, Mrs Hunt's cousin, was a doctor in Lambeth.

Western Liberty Reports Smaller Second-Quarter Loss; Nonperforming Assets Rise

Posted: at 9:14 pm

Posted: Aug. 15, 2012 | 11:41 a.m. Updated: Aug. 15, 2012 | 12:28 p.m.

Western Liberty Bancorp Inc., the parent company of Service1st Bank of Nevada, posted a smaller second-quarter loss than last year, despite a modest increase in nonperforming assets mostly associated with its commercial real estate portfolio.

The Las Vegas-based company lost $1.5 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with a loss of $4.6 million, or 30 cents a share, during second-quarter 2011.

Western Liberty in the quarter increased the size of its loan portfolio to $104.8 million, up from $101.5 million in the second quarter of 2011. Nonperforming assets totaled $26.5 million, up from $14.1 million in the same period last year.

"Our loan portfolio continues to stabilize, with nonperforming loans down $3.5 million from year end," said William Martin, CEO of Western Liberty. "While we still have a lot of work to do, we believe the steps we are taking will help us achieve our operating goals."

Martin said the bank's "capital remains exceptionally strong."

The company said in its quarterly financial report released late Tuesday that most problem loans were in its commercial real estate portfolio. Western Liberty's total assets were $198.7 million, compared with $223.3 million in the second quarter of 2011.

Service1st Bank operates two branches in Southern Nevada. Western Liberty also owns Las Vegas Sunset Properties, a company to manage under-performing and nonperforming loans as well as foreclosed real estate connected to the bank.

Peoria Liberty High School football goes on the defensive

Posted: at 9:14 pm

by Jason Stone - Aug. 15, 2012 11:31 AM Special for The Republic

Peoria Liberty's football team was one running back away from making the state semifinals last year. Unfortunately, that running back was on the other team.

Had it not been for Phoenix Arcadia's Sosaia Maafu ripping off more than 250 yards in the quarterfinals, it may have been Liberty playing in the Division III semifinals last year. As it was, Arcadia rallied from a 17-0 deficit behind Maafu to end Liberty's season in a heartbreaking way, 35-34.

This year, the team hopes its defense is ready, and coach Dan Filleman has brought in an experienced defensive coach to help make sure of it. Former Phoenix Moon Valley and Goodyear Millennium head coach Mark Smith has come on as defensive coordinator as nine new starters join the mix.

A shored-up defense can only mean bad news for opponents. Liberty has lost only two regular-season games in its three official seasons at the varsity level, and Filleman has quietly done one of the West Valley's best coaching jobs, leading the team to a 30-5 record and three playoff appearances over that span.

The return of senior quarterback Tyler Rogers is sparking more optimism this season. In a breakout junior year, Rogers passed for almost 2,500 yards and had 30 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 747 yards.

"Tyler is a hard worker and does all the right things in the offseason," Filleman said. "For him, he's had improvement just from his maturity and understanding of the game and the coverages. He's picking all those things up."

If Rogers is to put up similar numbers this year, he'll have to do it without receiver Paul Panaccione, who caught 19 touchdown passes last season and now plays baseball at Grand Canyon University.

Filleman said a talented group of six receivers, including a freshman, are all going to make contributions in making up for Panaccione.

"I think the receiving group is still going to be pretty good," Filleman said. "We've had some guys step up."

UC report on campus climate stirs free speech backlash

UC Berkeley Campanile

In the 1960s, UC Berkeley became well known as the birthplace of the campus free speech movement. Now, some University of California students see a threat to free speech brewing.

It started two years ago, when a number of disturbing incidents on UC campuses made big news. A group of Muslim students loudly interrupted the Israeli ambassadors talk at the Irvine campus, prompting an outcry by Jewish and Muslim students. During Black History Month, a UC San Diego frat house sent out Facebook invitations to a Compton Cookout; after black students complained, a noose was found hanging in the library.

These and other incidents of perceived racism or anti-Semitism prompted UC president Mark Yudof to form a task force to assess the racial, cultural and religious climate on campuses. The 17-member Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion visited UCs throughout the state to meet with students and talk about their concerns.

The councils report, delivered to Yudof last month, suggests a campus-wide need to foster a more inclusive climate. Among their recommendations: diversity training for faculty and students, attention to the dietary and worship needs of Muslim and Jewish students, a review of student organization activities and the adoption of a hate speech-free campus policy. But the report has raised questions by students, faculty and civil rights groups. The National Lawyers Guild, the Council on American-Islamic Relationas and an ad hoc student-faculty group have all sent letters to Yudof questioning the study and its recommendations.

What was the councils fact-finding process, and how did they reach the conclusions they did? What constitutes hate speech, and who decides the parameters? How is it distinguished from other forms of civil protest? What would a UC-wide hate speech-free policy look like and how will it be implemented? Even if such a policy is workable is it constitutional?

Free speech vs. hecklers: Where is the line?

Posted: at 9:13 pm

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A lot of people are talking about the crowd of protestors who drowned out Paul Ryan during his speech at the Iowa State Fair, but heckling is a time-honored political tradition and free speech is the law. So, where is the line?

Heckling at a campaign rally is really nothing new. In fact, it's something every politician has had to learn to deal with -- but there were times when Mitt Romney's new running mate was smothered by the shouts coming from the audience.

From the vantage point of one camera, a protestor was jumping up and down as others shouted. Eventually, they were escorted out and Ryan responded saying, "You know what? It's funny because Iowans and Wisconsinites, we like to be respectful of one another and peaceful with one another and listen to one another. These ladies must not be from Wisconsin or Iowa."

The climate in downtown Minneapolis was much different on Tuesday, where protestors gathered at a $15,000-a-head fundraiser for Romney. The demonstrators strongly believe that Romney's vision for America will hurt working families, but several of them said their goal is only to be heard, not to disrupt.

"I don't think there needs to be personal confrontation," said protestor Kim Matt.

Brian McClung, the former communications director for former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, said he agrees. After working on his fair share of campaigns, McClung told FOX 9 News there is very much a right and a wrong way to heckle a politician.

"If you want to go to a rally and go and hear somebody's speech and go and pop up with a sign and shout something out, OK. Fine, but then stop," he explained. "Let the person have their say. You'll get your opportunity too. You'll get noticed. The media will come over and talk to you about why you did that -- but it's when they try and drown somebody out that I think it's gone too far."

McClung also warned that there are risks to doing things the wrong way.

"It causes more Americans to tune out when they see that's the way the discourse in politics is going," he said.
