Liberty Media and Starz to become separate companies
Posted: August 10, 2012 at 3:14 pm
Liberty Media Corp., a Centennial-based holding company, announced Wednesday that it will spin off its Starz cable channels into a separate company, immediately stirring questions about the company's future in the Denver area.
The separation should be completed by the end of the year, creating a new, publicly held company.
"I think in this market, people always like pure plays," said Matt Harrigan, a Denver-based analyst for Wunderlich Securities. "It just makes sense to keep them different and separate."
The separation is meant to accomplish several goals, including greater clarity for investors regarding the business operations of Starz, improving its capital structure, and creating two "currencies" that can be used for acquisitions, said Greg Maffei, president and chief executive of Liberty.
Seeking to quell rumors of a major shift toward Los Angeles, Starz told The Denver Post that the split will not affect its operations at the Denver location.
Maffei also hopes that this move will produce greater liquidity for Liberty Media as it attempts to buy up more stock in the satellite radio broadcaster SiriusXM and the events promoter Live Nation, further increasing ownership in those companies.
Liberty Media expects the spinoff to be tax-free for its stakeholders.
Starz will consist of 100 percent of Starz LLC, about $1.5 billion in debt, and a yet-to-be determined amount of cash.
Chris Albrecht, currently the CEO of Starz LLC, will remain in his position.
"I think they're very committed to Chris Albrecht and what he can do," Harrigan said.

Neglected dogs, horses found at Liberty County home recovering
Posted: at 3:14 pm
The malnourished animals found packed inside a Liberty County home, where 15 dogs, two horses and a 1-year-old baby were discovered living in filth this week, are getting medical attention as they await future court proceedings to decide their fate.
On Tuesday evening , a 1-year-old baby was found in a dirty, hot house after Liberty County Sheriff's Office officials responded to an animal cruelty report at 105 County Road 2802 in Cleveland. A horse was found dead and other sickly animals were found on the property.
The Houston SPCA rescued the dogs, four of which were puppies, and two horses from the property on Wednesday. Tara Yurkshat, Houston SPCA vice president of animal welfare, said Thursday that each animal is now on an individual medical plan. Many were under-weight, some were heart-worm positive and many had general eye and skin infections. One of the recovered horses has an injury to a hoof.
The animals were visibly underfed when the crews took them from the house, which reeked of a foul stench, with their ribs showing.

The SPCA is taking care of the animals, now considered wards of the state, while the courts decide the fate of the animals. They are not available for adoption at this time.
"Basically, we are their caretakers until we know the next step for them," Yurkshat said. "They are resting, comfortable, getting food and water and TLC. That's what they really need."
The little girl was also found in the rural house, among trash, roaches, drinking from a dirty bottle with spoiled milk. Her parents were already on probation for a previous injury to a child charge, and had five children taken from their care.
Captain Rex Evans with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office said deputies still consider the child's father Aaron Parker a person of interest and would like to talk to him about the house and his baby. Parker is not considered a suspect at this time. The child's mother Mabel Larsen is in custody facing an animal cruelty charge, with additional charges pending.

Federal Court Upholds Free Speech Zone Roundup: David Knight Reports – Video

09-08-2012 01:16 There was once a group of men who established a fundamental law of the land that allowed the people of their new found country to peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances. These founding fathers of that Great nation even went so far as to declare that the government itself could never make a law that would threaten to supplant these protections, which were reserved exclusively for the people. This concept of freedom of assembly and protest was so critical to protecting and preserving the liberty of the people that it was the very first law -- the very first Amendment -- proposed by the newly elected representatives of These United States of America and came into effect on December 15, 1791. It's frightening what just a couple of hundred years of politicking, self serving greed and expediency can do to a nation. Apparently, somewhere along the way, politicians and judges who hold their personal views in higher regard than those laws upon which this nation was founded, have taken it upon themselves to decide what's best for the American people and that, perhaps, we have a little too much liberty: A federal appeals court has upheld the creation of no demonstration zones, which prohibit free speech in certain public areas. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals released a ruling yesterday upholding a lower court's decision that also declared such zones as being permissible. The opinion was penned by Judge Dennis Jacobs on behalf of a three ...

UC anti-Semitism report sparks free speech fight
Posted: at 3:12 pm
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) University of California students and faculty are criticizing a report to fight anti-Semitism that recommends the schools consider bans on hate speech and campus sponsorship of protests against Israel.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/MC0frW0 ) more than 2,200 students, faculty and alumni signed a petition asking UC President Mark Yudof to disregard the report, commissioned in response to turmoil over campus discrimination.
"We believe in the principles of free speech and that these principles stand on their own and do not require any additional regulation," the petition says.
In a letter to students on Wednesday, Yudof said restricting speech is not the solution to anti-Semitism.
The contentious recommendations came from a UC fact-finding team tasked with understanding Jewish student experiences following accusations of anti-Semitism on UC campuses, including the appearance of swastikas and harassment of Jewish students during pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The report is part of a wider effort to confront discrimination on UC campuses, such as the hanging of a noose in a library and defacement of a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender resource office.
"What we have witnessed in recent weeks are quite simply the worst acts of racism and intolerance I've seen on college campuses in 20 years," Yudof said in 2010, before starting a council to address the problem.
Richard Barton, an official from the Anti-Defamation League and a report author, told the San Francisco Chronicle that hostility toward Jewish students created by anti-Israel movements amounted to "allowing the Klan to walk around campuses and say things about black people."
The report also recommended schools define anti-Semitism and develop ways to sanction it, while offering cultural competency training. The authors encouraged the schools to implement a ban on hate speech, despite potential legal challenges.
The critics, many of whom are Jewish, said it wrongly equates criticism of Israel to anti-Semitism and its recommendations would have a chilling effect on free speech.

Leif Ove Andsnes: Fatherhood And Freedom At The Piano
Posted: at 1:13 am
Now that pianist Leif Ove Andsnes is in his 40s, he's told himself that it's time to "grow up" and immerse himself in Beethoven. This comes at the same time that he's immersing himself in the life of his daughter Sigrid, now 2.
For Andsnes, seeing the world through Beethoven's eyes is one thing, but seeing it through the eyes of a child is something else altogether.
"I notice a kind of willingness to look for the childlike beauty in things," Andsnes said. That's something new for the pianist. He says he also feels a new kind of freedom, knowing that after a concert, "if things didn't go that well, there are more important things in life ... and sometimes that brings freedom to the music-making."
For this Fraser Studio performance at WGBH, Andsnes takes a break from Beethoven, bringing a few sparkling miniatures including the Spanish Dance No. 5 by Enrique Granados, which he used to play when he was a small boy. He also plays the three elegant waltzes, Op. 70 by Chopin. They are miniatures, too, layered with intimacy while posing as salon entertainment. These jewels must be especially attractive now for Andsnes as he endures a massive, 150-city, four-year Beethoven project.
But for Andsnes, even in the small jewels, it's the depth that pulls him in; it's about finding and exposing the drama. I was reminded of pianist Marc-Andr Hamelin's description of a car ride with Andsnes. It was a trip across Norway to the seaside village of Risr with Andsnes at the wheel, gleefully pulling over for surprise waterfalls and sudden, breathtaking visions of the Norwegian mountains. It may be a slightly stretched metaphor, but in the same sort of way, Andsnes lights up the drama in the little Spanish waltz without veering off and losing his direction.
When it comes to Chopin, Andsnes plays with a warm, full-blooded approach: no secret undercurrents, no random shifts in tempo or temperament. He's focused on the flow and nature of the waltz more than on the myriad indulgent things that one might do to a waltz with a piano.
While Beethoven and Leif Ove Andsnes make their way around the world, he's discovered another thing since turning 40: "I am getting more and more sure of the fact that I cannot move away from Norway."
That strong sense of home seems to deepen Andsnes in every way. You can tell in the tenderness and detail he brings to his final selection: the March, Op. 54, No. 2 from fellow Norwegian Edvard Grieg.

Freedom of Stirling for Murray?
Posted: at 1:12 am
9 August 2012 Last updated at 08:43 ET
Calls have been made for Olympic gold medal winner Andy Murray to be given the Freedom of Stirling.
Dunblane's MSP, Keith Brown, has written to Stirling Council asking them to consider giving the tennis player the honour.
He congratulated the 25-year-old on his victory over Roger Federer at the London games, calling it a fantastic result.
He said everyone in Dunblane would be proud of the victory.
Mr Brown said: "It's been a hundred years since any member of Team GB has won a singles gold in tennis at the Olympics and I am delighted that Andy's hard work and training has paid off and resulted in double medal success.
"This is an achievement which should be recognised locally and I have written to Stirling Council to ask them to consider giving Andy the Freedom of the City."
A spokesperson for Stirling Council said the authority was considering the request.
Andy Murray's victory has already been commemorated in Dunblane, the Royal Mail have painted a post box gold to honour the occasion.

Liberty Silver Corp: An Open Letter to Shareholders of Sennen Resources
Posted: at 1:12 am
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire -08/09/12)- Geoff Browne, chairman and chief executive of Liberty Silver Corp. (LSL.TO)(LBSV), issued the following open letter today to shareholders of Sennen Resources Ltd. (SN.V):
Dear Sennen Shareholder:
You will by now have seen the directors' circular issued by Sennen on July 30, 2012, in response to our offer to acquire all Sennen's shares.
While Sennen has repeatedly portrayed our offer as hostile, our first preference remains to conclude a friendly transaction that will benefit the shareholders of both Sennen and Liberty Silver. As we have said from the start, we believe there are compelling reasons for a combination of our two companies.
Your decision whether to accept our offer should be guided by two over-riding considerations:
We are confident that Liberty Silver meets the test on both counts.
Which board and management team deserves your trust?
- Sennen alleged in a press release dated July 27, 2012 that Liberty Silver initiated its offer "without any prior discussion with Sennen management, and consequently, without providing Sennen any prior opportunity to conduct meaningful due diligence on Liberty".
This is a self-serving version of the facts. Our advisors tried for weeks to set up a meeting with Sennen to discuss our proposal, and I tried on numerous occasions to make contact with Ian Rozier, Sennen's chief executive officer, prior to announcing the offer. Liberty Silver's directors and advisors have also tried, so far without success, to contact the Sennen special committee to discuss our offer.
The truth is that we have given Mr. Rozier and his fellow-directors ample opportunity to discuss our offer and conduct due diligence, but they have chosen not to do so. Liberty Silver remains open to negotiations and any due diligence that Sennen may wish to conduct.

Candidates spar over issues facing Wisconsin
Posted: at 1:10 am
Candidates for the newly-redistricted 45th State Assembly District gathered at the Beloit Public Library Wednesday night to discuss topics that ranged from balancing the state budget to second amendment rights.
The debate was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Beloit and the Rock County Youth2Youth program. Randall Upton, president of the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce, served as moderator.
The race features two Democratic candidates and two Republican candidates looking to grab the nominations for Novembers general election. The primary election is set for Tuesday.
The Republicans in the race are two Orfordville Village Board members, Russell Rucker and Beth Schmidt, and the two Democrats are Beloit City Council member Sheila DeForest and state Rep. Janis Ringhand, D-Evansville.
The first question dealt with balancing the state budget. Upton asked the candidates whether or not they supported increasing the tax on alcohol and if there was a need to restructure the tax code.
Schmidt said the legislature needs to be careful when raising taxes on alcohol. She said both the state and the federal governments need to restructure the tax code.
I would definitely sit at the table along with legislators in Madison and look at ways that we could really do something that would be fair for everybody across the board, she said.
DeForest said the state is in desperate need for tax equity.
The wealthier need to pay their fair share, she said. Thats not happening right now.
DeForest said she doesnt believe that tax cuts for the wealthy will create more jobs.

Free Speech and Facebook
Posted: at 1:10 am
Lynchburg, VA - Facebook lets us post pictures, talk to friends and even make political statements. But are your social media actions protected free speech? Virginia courts are trying to figure that out.
The plaintiffs say what they did on Facebook is free speech, but it cost them their jobs.
Plaintiffsused the "like" button on Facebook to endorse a candidate for Sheriff in Hampton, Virginia. Here's the issue: The employees worked in the sheriff's office, and they "liked" their boss's challenger.
Do you think their "likes" are protected speech? We asked two Lynchburg lawyers.
Social media changed the way we communicate. Attorney John Falcone says the courts are entering new territory here.
"This is an evolving area of the law. Judges, lawyers and really everybody are really struggling with how it's going to develop," said Falcone.
For the first time, one person can type their thoughts to hundreds or thousands at one time. But are those thoughts protected by freedom of speech? It's not black and white. Your tweet or Facebook protection depends on who you are, what you post, and where you work - among other things.
"The 1st Amendment limits the action of government, of a public employer. The 1st Amendment doesn't limit the action of private employers," saidFred Watson, a civil attorney.
With that freedom comes pain. Some have gotten hurt on Facebook.
"There's so much drama on Facebook and everything. There's a lot of slander going on on Facebook," said Anthony May.
