Roseanne Barr seeks Peace and Freedom Party's presidential nod

Posted: August 4, 2012 at 10:15 pm

Comedian Roseanne Barr will vie to represent the Peace and Freedom Party as candidate for president at the partys nominating convention in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Dozens of delegates gathered at a South L.A. Methodist church to hear the candidates present their cases. Voting will take place Saturday afternoon, party representatives said. Activist Stephen Durham, aspiring teacher Peta Lindsay and sales consultant and activist Stewart Alexander are also vying for the nomination.

Barr, who had previously sought the Green Partys presidential nod, threw her name into the race on Thursday. Her running mate is Cindy Sheehan, who famously protested outside President George W. Bushs Texas ranch after her son, Army Spec. Casey Sheehan, was killed in Iraq. The Green Party nominated environmentalist Jill Stein for president at its national convention in July.

The Peace and Freedom Party is struggling to maintain its ballot status under Californias new top-two primary system and needs to register tens of thousands of voters to maintain its ballot status in 2014, said Cat Woods, a member of the partys statewide central committee who is supporting Barr.

The hardest thing for us to do is to actually reach the people whose interests we represent, said Woods. The great thing about Roseanne and Cindy is that when they say it people actually hear it.

More than 300 comment on David Kolb's column on the Second Amendment

Posted: at 10:15 pm

Inspired by the shooting in a Colorado movie theater, which resulted in the deaths of 12 people and injured more than 50, columnist David Kolb took on the Second Amendment this week. More than 300 people commented on his column.

A gun owner himself, Kolb lamented the violent future the Second Amendment ensures in the column, "The future looks violent with the Second Amendment."

Kolb wrote:

As such, our nation is condemned to suffer the next outrage in which a deranged personality with a lunatic grudge decides to accumulate an arsenal that would embarrass a small police department and go hunting for humans.

This is America.

This is the way it is.

This is the way it will be.

Politically, its impossible to change this bleak future of violent acts.

Here's what MLive and Chronicle readers had to say.

How long would it have taken the Theater Shooter to prepare a chemical weapon or a bomb instead of using guns. These guns were used because they were convenient. This guy was nearly a doctor of science. A bomb would have not presented a problem for this guy. So, he painted up his hair, and did what would garner himself the most press and recognition. He didn't fight with police afterwards. Gave up without incident. Because Mr. Kolb and the rest of the so called journalists made him famous. Perhaps we should outlaw journalists, because without the Kolbs of this world, he would not have had a reason to do what he did.

Celebrating the End of the Fairness Doctrine – Video

Posted: at 10:15 pm

04-08-2012 07:24 On August 4th, 1987 the Federal Communications Commission unanimously voted to repeal the fairness doctrine, its policy requiring broadcasters to air all sides of a controversial issue. Despite its lofty name, the fairness doctrine was abolished over concerns that it had a chilling effect on free speech. "It does sound great," says George Mason University's Thomas Hazlett, "but the fact is there is a frontal conflict between the first amendment...and the government considering whether or not the fairness of a particular report passes muster." Hazlett sat down with ReasonTV's Nick Gillespie to discuss the fairness doctrine, its repeal, and why we are unlikely to see it instituted again. About 9 minutes. Interview by Nick Gillespie. Shot by Joshua Swain and Meredith Bragg. Edited by Bragg. Go to for downloadable versions and subscribe to ReasonTV's YouTube Channel to receive notifications when new material goes live.

Liberty Ross and Rupert Sanders

Liberty Ross wants to meet with Robert Pattinson.

The 'Snow White and the Huntsman' actress was devastated when her husband Rupert Sanders had a fling with Robert's girlfriend Kristen Stewart and now she hopes to have a chat with the 'Twilight Saga' hunk so they can compare stories.

A source told Hollywoodlife.com: 'Liberty is still furious with what happened and wants answers. She has not spoken to Rob yet, but wants to see him and compare stories. She is hoping they can bring some comfort to each other.'

This comes after it was revealed last week that Robert wants to talk to Liberty to get some clarity on the situation and check if Kristen's story that there was no full blown affair is true.

An insider said: 'He needs to know for his own peace of mind if theirs was just a fleeting moment.

'He hopes Liberty can help him find the answers he so desperately craves.

'Nothing is very clear at the moment but perhaps a meeting would lend some clarity to the situation. He needs to know the truth.'

LIBERTY Dental Plan Sponsors Smile Keepers Program for Seventh Year

Posted: at 11:12 am

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

LIBERTY Dental Plan (LIBERTY) proudly observed their seventh annual sponsorship of Smile Keepers, a community dental screening program in Sacramento County. LIBERTYs contribution for the dental hygiene public service program received extremely positive results, with over 1,100 local school-age children receiving valuable dental care from this years efforts.

The Smile Keepers team of volunteer staff took mobile dental vans to over 23 public elementary schools and community events last year to reach high-risk, low-income areas where local children are less likely to have the opportunity to see a dentist.

Over 660 kindergarten-aged children learned the importance of dental hygiene when Smile Keepers visited elementary classes across Sacramento, and provided the young patients with oral check-ups and at least one coat of varnish. Another 446 kids received dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and referral resources at community events such as Back to School Fairs, and Family Resource Center Events. Additionally, over 5,000 LIBERTY fliers containing proper oral health tips were distributed to children and their parents.

Melinda Bitney, Sacramento Network Manager of LIBERTY Dental Plan, commended Kate Varanelli, Sacramento County Dental Health Program Coordinator, and The Smile Keepers team of volunteer staff for their successes with this program and its mission to introduce healthy dental habits to the children of Sacramento County. LIBERTY Dental Plan has continued its financial commitment in support of this invaluable low-income preschool oral health program in Sacramento County since 2005, providing dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, oral health education information and follow-up on those children needing dental services. LIBERTY is proud of our partnership with The Smile Keepers Program and the benefits it brings to the children of Sacramento County.

Where Free Speech Goes to Die: The Workplace

Posted: at 11:11 am

In America you can say pretty much whatever you want, wherever you want to say it. Unless, that is, youre at work. Simply put, there is no First Amendment right to free speech in the workplacepotentially perilous for many employees in a polarized political year with a tight presidential race.

Current news provides plenty of examples of just how much leeway managers have to limit their workers freedom of speech, or to encourage political activity among employees. On Aug. 2, an Arizona-based medical supplies manufacturer, Vante, dismissed CFO Adam Smith for berating a Tucson Chick-fil-A employee for working at what he considered a homophobic company. Chick-fil-A has made national headlines recently for its presidents controversial comments about same-sex marriage.

I dont know how you live with yourself and work here, Smith says in a video of the exchange, which was posted on YouTube (GOOG). This is a horrible corporation with horrible values. You deserve better. Vante quickly fired Smith, and posted its regrets about the incident in a statement on the home page of its website.

Bosses and those who work under them are not equal when it comes to free-speech legal claims. Employers have the right to take action against any employee who engages in political speech that company leaders find offensive. With a few narrow exceptions the Constitution and the federal laws derived from it only protect a persons right to expression from government interference, not from the restrictions a private employer may impose, lawyers say.

Employers are not similarly restricted in expressing their political views or encouraging support for a particular candidate or cause. Not only can employers remind employees of the upcoming election and encourage them to vote, but they can base continued employment on whether a worker agrees to contribute money or time to the bosss favorite political candidate, so long as theres no state law prohibiting it. (Eight states and the District of Columbia have laws protecting employees from such mandates.)

Consider the case of David Siegel, founder of Orlando (Fla.)-based Westgate Resorts, the nations biggest time-share developer and the man behind what is planned to be the largest house in America. In February, Siegel told Bloomberg Businessweek that his efforts were largely responsible for the 2000 election of President George W. Bush. Im not bragging, Im just stating the fact: I personally got George W. Bush elected, he said. I had my managers do a survey on every employee. If they liked Bush, we made them register to vote. But not if they liked Gore. Siegel also said his companys call center made 80,000 calls on behalf of Bushs campaign.

While federal statutes such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, and the National Labor Relations Act limit companies rights to fire or hire workers and prevent them from joining unions, these restrictions are based only on race, religion, ethnicity, sex, age, and a few other protected categories. Political opinion isnt protected by any of these statutes.

The First Amendment applies only to employees of the government in certain situations, and all citizens when theyre confronted by the government, says Mark Trapp, an employment lawyer with Epstein Baker Green in Chicago. In other words, freedom to speak your mind doesnt really exist in work spaces.

Its a limitation that retired Air Force Colonel Morris Davis knows well. The former prosecutor of the Guantanamo Bay military commissions, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, resigned over what he perceived as systematic mistreatment and abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers at the detention camp. After taking a job with the Library of Congress, he was fired in late 2009 for refusing to recant the contents of pieces published in the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post criticizing the Obama administrations failure to close the prison.

I was shocked to see the limits of the First Amendment, Morris says. We like to think that our rights are carved in granite, but instead it turns out theyre carved in sand. Morris now teaches law at Howard University; the American Civil Liberties Union has sued the Library of Congress seeking Morriss reinstatement.
