Is China attacking Hong Kong press freedom?

Posted: July 6, 2012 at 3:12 am

Protesters tear up images of the front page of Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper after claims of censorship.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Editor's note: Mak Yin Ting has worked as a journalist for more than 25 years. She is currently the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Hong Kong correspondent for Radio France International.

(CNN) -- "Hong Kong enjoys a far higher degree of press freedom than before the handover in 1997 and this is on par with the most developed places in the world," said Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs, Tsang Tak-sing, to the Legislative Council last November.

Tsang was urging council members to vote down a motion defending press freedom in the territory, put forth by the Democratic Party's Emily Lau amid growing concern about China's influence on Hong Kong's media.

In fact, he sounded like a mainland official citing instances of 'good deeds' when rebutting criticism against China's human rights record.

Such claims contrast sharply with the reality in Hong Kong, where the free flow and access to information has been gradually but steadily restricted following Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997. Although freedom of the press is enshrined in Hong Kong's de facto constitution, the Basic Law, the gap has been shrinking between our city and mainland China, which does not enjoy freedom of expression.

Mak Yinting is the chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalists Association.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region- Is it still special 15 years later?

In Hong Kong, the proliferation of media outlets does not tell the whole story. The figures are robust: a city of seven million people consuming 46 daily newspapers and 642 periodicals as of 2010, according to the Hong Kong Yearbook. Nonetheless, the large number of media outlets does not ensure a diversity of voices, which is a fundamental part of press freedom.

Freedom on display as North Jersey celebrates Independence Day [video]

One of the few points that can be made universally about the state of freedom on the Fourth of July is that Americans possess divergent views on the issue outlooks that are colored by worldviews, political leanings and factors as plain as age.

Edwin Gonzalez, 2, portraying George Washington, and his sister Giuliana, 5, playing Betsy Ross, in Ridgefield Parks Baby and Youth Parade. They won an award as most patriotic.

It can also be said that its relatively easy to find people at least in North Jersey who are willing to openly share their views on a principle that is both revered and controversial.

Freedom was on the brain at dozens of events marking 236 years of American independence across Bergen and Passaic counties, including celebrations in Teaneck, Allendale, Little Falls, Ringwood, Hackensack and Ridgefield Park.

While watching a parade in Ridgefield Park on Wednesday, village resident Chris Cajas, 31, measured the amount of liberty that he is afforded against the limited number of rights held by millions of others living under repressive regimes.

The fight for freedom and democracy thats celebrated on Independence Day has been echoed in the drumbeat of stories coming out of Syria and Egypt.

I think with the struggles in the economy and abroad, I feel more free and more appreciative of the real meaning of freedom, Cajas said.

Iram Valentin, 35, of Hackensack measures freedom in bandwidth and credits the Internet for fostering a rise in self-expression.

How you can express yourself and what you can say has increased because of social media, Valentin said. It used to be that you had to be rich to own Encyclopedia Britannica, but now anyone can get onto the Internet and get information.

Ali to become 1st ex-athlete to receive Liberty Medal

Posted: at 3:12 am

Muhammad Ali will be honored as the 24th recipient of the Liberty Medal on Sept. 13 at the National Constitution Center at Philadelphia's Independence Hall.

The National Constitution Center is the national headquarters of the Constitution's 225th anniversary celebration, and part of the celebration includes honoring Ali with the Liberty Medal, which is awarded to individuals of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe.

Among the past winners of the Liberty Medal are former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, movie director Steven Spielberg, former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Colin Powell, Sandra Day O'Connor and Nelson Mandela.

Ali is the first former athlete to be awarded the Liberty Medal.

It is incredibly fitting that Muhammad Ali, a representative for , the bicentennial of the Constitution, be awarded the prestigious Liberty Medal in 2012, as the nation celebrates the 225th anniversary of our founding document, former President Bill Clinton, Chair of the National Constitution Center and past Liberty Medal recipient, said in a statement. Ali embodies the spirit of the Liberty Medal by embracing the ideals of the Constitution - freedom, self-governance, equality, and empowerment - and helping to spread them across the globe.

As well as being a gold-medal winner and one of the greatest boxers in history, Ali has been an outspoken advocate of religious and civil rights domestically and throughout the world.

When selected for the military draft, he became a conscientious objector. He took his battle to the Supreme Court and won, even though it cost him his boxing title and time in the ring.

Ali, who turns 70 this year, has been an ambassador for peace and justice worldwide throughout his adult life. He has become an advocate for those suffering from Parkinson's disease, a disease that has afflicted Ali.

He was selected in 1987 by the California Bicentennial Foundation for the U.S. Constitution to personify the meaning of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Muhammad Ali symbolizes all that makes America great, while pushing us as a people and as a nation to be better,' National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner, said in a statement. Each big fight of his life has inspired a new chapter of civic action. We look forward to welcoming him back to the Center, particularly during this momentous 225th anniversary year.

Liberty Star Discovers Large Intrusion under Tombstone Caldera, Associated with Mineral Deposits

Posted: at 3:12 am

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp. (Liberty Star or the Company) (LBSR: OTCBB) is pleased to announce that the Company has discovered a large intrusion indicated by an aerially extensive low flight level magnetic survey, over and around the Tombstone caldera.

Background: The magnetic data provided to Jim Briscoe (JAB), ca. 1999 by an Australian mining company, was overlooked in a large collection of rolled maps, but was re-discovered during computer scanning of some 400 large rolled maps collected over 40 + years of work on the Tombstone Mining District, and elsewhere. When these maps were scanned, digitized and turned into computer compatible images, this mag data was recognized to be critically important to the current exploration work in the Tombstone caldera. Ca. 1981- 83, JAB compiled and reinterpreted data collected over the preceding 10 + years. His curiosity about inexplicable geologic relationships in the Tombstone area led him to the conclusion that Tombstone was a caldera, and that previous interpretations of the origin of the district were in error. JAB sent his data and conclusions to Dr. Peter Lipmann, US Geological Survey Caldera specialist. Dr. Lipmann, after field work and review of the data, concluded Briscoe was correct and gave him written credit for the recognition. Subsequent work by the United States Geological Survey and others (including JAB) has refined the interpreted aerial extent of the caldera. It is now generally recognized , through study by many geologists in mineral deposits associated with volcanism and calderas that many mineral deposits and particularly porphyry copper deposits, are associated with the roots of calderas., To put it another way, mineral deposits are associated with the tops of intrusive granitic masses (plutons) which cause calderas in the first place. Liberty Star has concentrated much effort on these interpretative studies including contributions of Briscoes work in over 20 calderas -most mineralized. Because of this work, dating back to 1965, we believe that the Pebble Deposit and associated alteration zone, including Liberty Stars adjacent, covered alteration zone( indicated by porphyry copper geochemical signatures and ZTEM electromagnetic geophysics) defines the Big Chunk caldera in southwest Alaska.

Importance: At Tombstone, the large magnetic high revealed by the newly retrieved magnetic map represents the large body of solidified (but previously molten) granite (magma), which is the subsurface continuation of the exposed Schieffelin granodiorite (granite body named for the discoverer of the district, Ed Schieffelin), and other associated intrusives, which fed the explosive caldera and the surface (sub aerial) deposition of the Uncle Sam ignimbrite (welded tuff). The Company has compiled all geologic and mineral occurrence and alteration zones in the district and surrounding area, including virtually all mines and prospects, no matter how small, and superimposed them on the image of the magnetic body. When this was done it is clear that mineral bearing hydrothermal bodies porphyry copper systems and associated precious metal mineralization- are intimately associated with magnetic fluxuations (anomalies) in this magnetic body.

The intrusion covers about 215 square miles and its generalized edges appear to follow the outer edge of the interpreted caldera margins. All known mineralization, represented by prospects and the old Tombstone Consolidated Mines production area adjacent to the Tombstone town site are associated with these fluxuations (anomalies) in this intrusive mass. As yet undiscovered mineral bodies, if they exist, will likely be as well.

One of these anomalies is the magnetic high associated with the Hay Mountain target. Another is associated with the Walnut Creek target. Other anomalies appear to be associated with other confidential targets identified by other criteria. With the application of ZTEM geophysics we believe that ZTEM anomalies associated with porphyry copper alteration zones will be revealed. These, with this new data in hand could number 5 to 7 or more major targets.

Considering the size of the Tombstone caldera and its underlying magma source, (both about 215 square miles), in comparison to known mineral bearing calderas, the Tombstone area warrants much additional work. In terms of size and commercial potential, the Tombstone caldera compares in size to large surrounding Laramide (an age designation about 65 million years ago) calderas and associated mineral zones in the southeastern part of Arizona.

Comments James Briscoe, Liberty Stars CEO and Chief Geologist, I have surmised, for many years, that the Tombstone caldera could be one of the large hosts for porphyry copper zones in southeastern Arizona. We now have an accurate measurement of the calderas size and precise location of the driving granite intrusive (granite pluton). We will work to see if we can confirm additional porphyry copper mineral targets, beyond the targets we already have, using our normal, careful, methodical application of cutting edge geotechnology. Hay Mountain and our other Tombstone holdings reside within or along the edge of this massive intrusion.

James A. Briscoe James A. Briscoe, Professional Geologist, AZ CA CEO/Chief Geologist Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp.

*For those interested in more detail on the formation of calderas and associated mineral bodies we are seeking permission to post excerpts of a report on the subject for interested laymen as well as professionals, on our web site, under the Mining Explained dropdown. This well written report is called Desert Heat Volcanic Fire. A full copy of this report on the Tucson Mountains Caldera (similar to the Tombstone and other mineral bearing SE AZ calderas, can be obtained from the Arizona Geological Society http://www.arizonageologicalsoc.org/publications/digest-21. This will explain the why of some of the exploration approaches your company pursues. Remember, we also have a Mining & Geology Glossary under the same dropdown to help you through the mining and geology jargon.

Youth exercise 2nd Amendment rights at 4-H shooting competition

Posted: at 3:10 am

BOIS D'ARC, Mo - While most spent the last couple of days celebrating America's freedoms; nearly 100 4-H kids recently exercised their Second Amendment rights in an annual shooting competition.

But this wasn't just about learning how to handle a firearm, the kids learn all kinds of life lessons in 4-H. "They're doing things that we have done throughout our history, throughout our lives; the ones down here are shooting archery, we have kids shooting air rifles, small bore rifles, shotguns, and they're learning life skills, they're learning responsibilities, things like that and it's things they'll carry on for the rest of their lives," says event coordinator Parish Witt.

16 year old Austin Witt has been in 4-H for eight years. "In eight years I've participated in everything from shooting sports to horse showing to cow showing; I've participated in mechanics, woodworking, photography," says Austin Witt.

He's been shooting guns even longer. "Since I was tall enough to hold one," says Austin.

To him, it's more than a hobby, "It's a skill that's evolved, to take you to the level you need to be in this competition," says Austin, and a skill he enjoys sharing with others. "I get to see all the youth that are getting involved in the organization," says Austin.

Youth like Clayton Winslow. "I like the shotgun quite a bit; the archery is pretty fun too; it's just a lot of fun, shooting clay pigeons, see who's the better shot," says Winslow.

Clayton may see whose aim is the truest, but Austin sees something more. "I get to see that the program isn't dying, the program is growing more and more every year," says Austin.

Wednesday's competition was a district qualifier; from there shooters go on to state competition, which for shotguns, is in August. The rest of the shooting sports state competition is in September.

To learn more about local 4-H programs contact your county's University of Missouri Extension office or click here to visit the University of Missouri Extension website.

Freedom fighter's new frontier

David Nyuol Vincent: 'While most of Australia is overwhelmingly not racist, there are certain elements of racism in the community. And it's enough to make you feel sometimes like this isn't your home.'

David Nyuol Vincent survived a childhood in war-torn Sudan and 17 years in a refugee camp. Now he continues the struggle for peace as an Australian.

DAVID Vincent was eight when he and his father fled Sudan. Over most of two decades, he endured training as a child soldier for the Sudan People's Liberation Army, bomb raids, starvation, land mines and cholera. He came to Australia, aged 26, in 2004. Vincent settled in quickly, gained a degree in political science and criminology from Melbourne University, and became a community leader.

In this extract from his memoirs, published to mark the first anniversary of independence for South Sudan, he reflects on life in Australia.

IN SEPTEMBER 2007, Sudanese teenager Liep Gony was bashed to death in Noble Park. Twenty-four-year-old Clinton Rintoull pleaded guilty to murder and is serving 20 years in jail. Throughout that year, stories had appeared in the media about so-called Sudanese gangs being violent and anti-social and causing trouble. It is true that some Sudanese kids get intoxicated with alcohol, get into fights and can be disengaged. But this can be said about youth of all ethnic backgrounds.

Advertisement: Story continues below

Mostly they were just kids hanging out in groups. When people saw them together, they made the assumption that they were a gang. I could be hanging out with my soccer boys in a peaceful gathering, but someone would see 20 black men together and conclude that we're a gang.

Liep was not a troublemaker; he loved playing basketball and hanging out with his friends. His funeral reinforced the senselessness of a teenage boy's life lost. A boy who had escaped the horrors of war-ravaged Sudan and come to a country that was meant to value freedom and security - only to die a brutal death.

In the camp in Africa and as a child soldier, I had buried my own friends over the years without shedding a tear. But that day I cried for Liep. And for the first time since I had arrived in Australia, I wished that I was back in Kakuma, the refugee camp in Kenya. I felt that I hated Australia the way I had been taught to hate the northern Sudanese.

I thought I had seen everything in Africa. I thought I was now incapable of being shocked by anything. But Liep's death shocked me. Violent death was normal in Africa. I struggled to comprehend how this could happen in Australia.
