Freedom School Helps Durham's At-Risk Students
Posted: July 25, 2012 at 2:12 pm
Editor's Note: Gabriel Aikens is a student at NC Central University who is working this summer with Duke's Office of News and Communications.
Durham, NC - A formula for summer learning that turns it into a cool and tasty experience: Dip ice cream into liquid nitrogen. Be astonished by the chemical change. Then eat, and laugh loud.
In a boisterous corner of West Campus recently, 80 second and third graders in the Duke University/Children's Defense Fund Freedom School found that to be a winning formula for keeping kids on track for learning during the summer and fostering a love for reading and exploring.
The lesson had the students create frozen concoction similar to Dippin' Dots, by dropping the ice cream into a container of liquid nitrogen. The program's supervisors safely handled the liquid nitrogen and the students were able to eat their creations after the nitrogen hardened the ice cream.
"It's so cold that it burns? That doesn't make any sense," said second grader Shannon Murphy. She and the other children were perplexed and fascinated.
"It makes this summer really cool," said Jorge Castillo Hernandez, a 3rd grader from E.K. Powe Elementary School who wants to be an astronaut. "I like all the fun stuff we do like going to the museum, going to the pool, and making crafts."
The Children's Defense Fund, a national non-profit organization, developed the Freedom Schools model for students who are at risk of losing academic ground during the summer. There are more than 100 Freedom Schools throughout the country, all with a main focus on reading.
"The books chosen for the children are from a committee of well-respected educational leaders and activists," says Lindsay Naylor, program coordinator for Duke's Office of Durham and Regional Affairs. Naylor helped acquire funding for the program, which is now in its second year at Duke. "The books are meant to give the children different perspectives of cultures and the world."
These books include "A Picture Book of Thurgood Marshall" by David Adler and "Biblioburro: a True Story of Colombia " by Jeanette Winter. Each deals with themes such as family, community, hope and education.
Besides reading every day, the students engage in a variety of activities while on campus, including visiting science labs.

Two hotels to be part of First Freedom Center in Shockoe Slip
Posted: at 2:12 pm
Richmond, Va. --
Construction on the First Freedom Center complex, a combined hotel and educational center on one of the most significant historical sites in downtown, is expected to begin early next year.
The complex, which won Richmond City Council approval Monday night, is a joint project of First Freedom Center and Richmond-based hotel owner and operator Apple REIT Cos.
The six-story project on East Cary and 14th streets includes two hotels and an education center on the site where the Virginia General Assembly passed Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in 1786.
The statute was a cornerstone of the First Amendment to the Constitution.
"Jefferson did this on this piece of ground, and from here it has radiated out across the country and around the whole world," said Randolph Bell, the center's president.
"We want the center to be a manifestation of that unique Richmond linkage to the world through this ideal."
When completed, the center will house permanent and traveling exhibits as well an auditorium and meeting space. First Freedom's mission is to advance freedom of religion and freedom of conscience.
Apple REIT, a real estate investment trust focused on ownership of upscale, extended-stay and select-service hotels across the country, will build a 135-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 75-room Residence Inn by Marriott at the center.
The hotel space will include a religious freedom library "and other features responding to the educational mission of the overall complex."

Liberty Star Signs Letter of Agreement for Encampment and Drilling Services at Big Chunk, Southwestern Alaska, with …
Posted: at 2:12 pm
TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp. (Liberty Star or the Company) (LBSR: OTCBB) is pleased to announce that the Company has entered into an Agreement for Exploration Services (Agreement), including encampment construction, operation and diamond core drilling services, with MBGS LLC (MBGS) of Anchorage, Alaska, for work at the Companys Big Chunk Super Project (BCSP). The camp is to be established in the center of the Big Chunk South block. This agreement will be the first step in Liberty Stars long-term objective of engaging and working with the Alaskan native people in a true business relationship.
An exploration camp is in the process of being set up on a 40 acre Alaskan Native allotment, owned by the principals of MBGS, which lies in the approximate center of the Big Chunk South Claim block. All field mobilization will be centered on this camp facility which will include all the typical amenities such as secure and comfortable accommodations, water, power, cooking facilities and so forth. Fuel and aircraft landing facilities will also be provided, as will Internet computer communication. As this camp will be proximate to all drill targets in both North Big Chunk and South Big Chunk, we foresee that its usefulness will span potentially many years. We believe that substantial cost savings will result from reduced aircraft usage because of proximity to drill targets. There is plenty of room for expansion, and nearby large lakes are available for the landing of pontoon equipped aircraft of any size. The first phase of the Agreementfor exploration services is scheduled to run from approximately August 1 through September 2012. We anticipate this agreement will be successful and continue for many years. Among MBGSs responsibilities is to obtain AK State mandated permits and complete diamond core drilling of HQ size for at least 10 drill holes at a depth ranging from 500 to 2,000 feet.
The location of the drill holes is the result of careful analysis of several data sets: detailed aeromag work contracted by Liberty Star in early 2004, interpretation of geochem work completed by the Company in 2004-2005 by members of Liberty Stars Technical Advisory Group, recommendations made within the 2010 SRK Technical Report covering the BCSP, original and completely reprocessed ZTEM geophysics imaging provided by Geotech LTD. (NR 128), and evaluation by Liberty Stars Chief Geologist James A. Briscoe and Liberty Star Technical Advisory Board Member Dr. Erik Murdock.
Comments James Briscoe: The work we plan to undertake at Big Chunk fulfills our obligations to complete labor on our claims for this year and several years ahead and sets us on a path to engage in a drilling program that I believe will confirm that Liberty Star owns lands that will have commercially important quantities of copper, gold and moly [molybdenum]. The manager of MBGS, Jim Stevens, is an Alaskan native, a very experienced contractor and entrepreneur, a lifelong resident of, was born and grew up in the area. He conceived this approach over the last year and a half, along with my suggestions. We believe he will head the best operation to complete the program quickly and efficiently over the near and long term. We look forward to working with this Alaska native corporation.
Forward-Looking Statements
Statements in this news release that are not historical are forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements in this news release include: that the camp may be useful for years and could result in cost savings; that MBGS can obtain drilling permits; and that we have commercially important quantities of copper, gold and molybdenum. Factors which may delay or prevent these forward-looking statements from being realized include; we may not be able to raise sufficient funds to complete our intended exploration or carry on operations; and an inability to continue exploration due to weather, logistical problems, labor or equipment problems or hazards even if funds are available. Despite encouraging data there may be no commercially exploitable mineralization on our properties. Readers should refer to the risk disclosures in the Companys recent 10-K and the Companys other periodic reports filed from time to time with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Liberty Silver Starts Planning for Production at Trinity Silver
Posted: at 2:12 pm
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire -07/24/12)- Liberty Silver Corp. (LSL.TO)(LBSV) ("Liberty Silver" or the "Company") has engaged an independent consultancy, SRK Consulting (U.S.), Inc., of Reno, Nevada, to undertake a scoping study for silver production at Liberty Silver's Trinity Silver property.
"We remain guided by our disciplined mitigated-risk approach," said Geoffrey Browne, Liberty Silver's Chairman and CEO. "Even though we have identified multiple exploration targets at Trinity, our board of directors and management are keenly aware of current challenging conditions for junior mining companies in global capital markets. We are thus evaluating various options, including the prudency of immediately proceeding with production planning and execution."
Liberty Silver completed and filed a NI 43-101 technical report on the Trinity mining district silver project in December 2011. The report identified an inferred resource that the Company expects to upgrade in the near term. As part of the first phase 2012 drilling program (See press releases January 25, and July 9, 2012), two drill holes, of a planned twelve-hole program, successfully began confirming the grade and thickness of the resource. Other holes identified strong new silver mineralization outside the current NI 43-101 inferred resource.
The scoping study by SRK Consulting will include the following:
Liberty Silver has also retained JBR Environmental of Reno, Nevada, to begin the permitting process for mine development. JBR has done all of the environmental work for Liberty Silver on the project to date.
Liberty Silver is currently planning the second phase of the Trinity 2012 drill program at locations adjacent to and removed from the resource area as well as confirmation drilling within the resource area.
About Liberty Silver Corp.

The Company is led by a skilled, experienced, management team and board of directors with significant experience managing exploration, development and mining projects. Actual results relating to, among other things, results of exploration, project development, reclamation and capital costs of the Company's mineral properties, and the Company's financial condition and prospects, could differ materially from those currently anticipated in such statements for many reasons such as: changes in general economic conditions and conditions in the financial markets; changes in demand and prices for minerals; litigation, legislative, environmental and other judicial, regulatory, political and competitive developments; technological and operational difficulties encountered in connection with the activities of the Company; and other matters discussed in this news release and in filings made with securities regulators. My favourite genre with Saif is a romantic film, says Dinesh Vijan
Posted: at 2:12 pm
By Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial
"I personally like making love stories and even though I am still learning and growing, I think this is something that I know", says Dinesh who had earlier tasted big success with LOVE AAJ KAL, again a romantic film, "In fact my favourite genre with Saif would be a romantic story as well, not to be mistaken with a romantic comedy though. In fact even if I were to make romantic comedy in future, it would be something on the lines of COCKTAIL and won't really have place for slapstick humour."
With COCKTAIL as well as LOVE AAJ KAL resulting in two successive romantic successes for his company, Dinesh seems to have cracked the code.
"See, for starters it is the most stable genre for Hindi films since time immemorial", he says, "Also, I feel that music really accentuates this genre well. However, at the end of the day, it's all about deciding the content in conjunction with each other. Whatever Saif and I may eventually choose, we need to believe in the same and have good conviction towards it. AGENT VINOD was not a romantic film but we had conviction in it right through it's conceptualisation till release."
He goes on to add in a lighter vein, "See, all us filmmakers have a certain timeline so we need to be aware of what we would be doing for another five or seven years. Reason being that after that some other smart chap will come along with his ideas. While we are at it, we would do what makes sense. After that we would hopefully hire that smart kid to work for us."
Good thought here!

Wallowing in the dirt: Internet debates about the Colorado/Dark Knight shootings
Posted: at 2:10 pm
Article II. A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the States to maintain Armed Militias shall not be infringed." Bill of Rights, United States Constitution
I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment (hell, if you dont start a piece with that line these days, you get demands to be investigated by the defunct HUAC) , but I also dont believe that anyone I know needs to be able to arm themselves with all the trappings of a small army. So, yes, Ill tell you at the outset of this piece that I believe in gun control, even though we have a gun in our home for protection.
The shootings in Colorado, after their initial horror, have given way to the insipid debates over the Second Amendment we so often see on the Internet, though this time completely divorced from reality. The dead in the theater are an inconvenience to some who push the hard-core Second Amendment argument at all costs, no matter who is in the body bags.
Though the debates I have read - and to some degree taken part in - have been online - in truth they take place in some vast graveyard, too large and too-peopled to be tended well, and expanding all the time. We lean against mossy tombstones and make witty remarks and score political points at our opponents expense.
We have a comfortable myth in this country that gun owners are repelling invaders on a daily basis, but aside from the occasional news story, most of the stories you will read about in the news have to do with random violence.
Family members.
Strangers in restaurants.
Patrons in bars.
Church goers.
Shoppers in malls.

How Aurora and other shootings are made in Europe
Posted: at 2:10 pm
Americans mourn the victims of the Aurora, Colo., shooting. In Europe, too, there is grief, mingled with incomprehension. The media chorus: How many more massacres before America adopts European-style gun control?
Christoph Prantner of Austria's Der Standard bemoans American insistence on Second Amendment rights, "even when this freedom occasionally has a very high price and, in a bloody perversion, fatally impairs the freedom of others."
I can't disagree. I just wish Prantner had noted that James Holmes was allegedly wielding Austrian weaponry when he barged into that darkened theater: specifically, a .40-caliber semiautomatic Glock pistol.
For all the tut-tutting across the pond, America's gun culture exists in symbiosis with Europe's culture of precision manufacturing, of which the Glock is a notable expression.
Thirty years ago, Gaston Glock designed this lightweight, rapid-fire killing machine and sold 20,000 to Austria's army. Now his state-supported invention is one of Austria's most successful exports. The tiny alpine nation exported 431,118 handguns to the United States in 2010, according to federal data. Only giant Brazil sold more.
The majority of the Austrian guns were Glocks. And while Glocks have replaced revolvers and U.S.-model pistols in police holsters across the land, most Glock imports are destined for the civilian market, according to journalist Paul M. Barrett, author of Glock: The Rise of America's Gun.
Glock's customers have apparently included not only Holmes, but also Jared Lee Loughner, charged in the 2011 Tucson massacre that left six dead and then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords among the severely injured, as well as the shooters in the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre (32 murdered) and the 1991 Killeen, Texas, massacre (23 murdered). You might call Glock the favorite weapon of America's Amoklaeufer, as those who run amok with guns are known in German.
But that wouldn't be fair to the makers of the Walther P22 that Virginia Tech shooter Seung Hui Cho also carried, or the Sig Sauer P232 that Steven Kazmierczak bore while killing five people at Northern Illinois University in 2008. Both are German products. With 230,447 handguns exported to the United States in 2010, Germany is the American gun junkie's No. 2 European dealer. All told, European Union members shipped just under a million handguns to the United States in 2010.
Their domestic markets may be limited by gun control, but Europe's arms makers can still get rich thanks to the Second Amendment. Who knew?
The question is what, if anything, to do about the influx of European-made semiautomatic pistols that have transformed the U.S. market while their manufacturers pay only a modest tariff.
