Freedom School: ‘Reading is not just opening a book'

Posted: July 17, 2012 at 11:16 pm

Kindred Durant was perched on a stool Monday, surrounded by eight rising sixth graders brimming with energy and anecdotes, trying to focus their attention on the themes of a story poem.

I think we need to read this one more time because I dont think we fully understand what the poem says, said Durant, a recent USC graduate who will begin teaching full time in August.

The youngsters, all rising students at W.A. Perry Middle School, werent hesitant about reading out loud or dissecting the images, even as they got creatively sidetracked by stories of the occasional neighborhood confrontation, the epistemological meaning of whats up, bro and whether it is appropriate to cultivate boyfriends and girlfriends in middle school.

Video from around the world

Welcome to Columbias first Freedom School, a project of the Childrens Defense Fund that aims to enhance reading skills even as it instills a message that middle school students have big contributions to make if they are willing to put in the time to excel.

Durant, one of 11 motivational interns, was happy when the kids chimed in with strong opinions about the book.

He puts in more angry words than the other one, Shakiyah Craig, 11, said of the poetic narrator.

He says do your thing, be yourself, said Deshon Thomas, also 11.

USC education professor Tambra Jackson is the creative force behind the five-week Columbia summer school, which is offered free to 110 middle school students. She remembers her own exhilarating experience in 1996 as a Freedom School intern while she was a student at Miami University in Ohio.

For me, it sealed the deal that education is what I wanted to do, Jackson said. After Jackson joined the USC education faculty in 2006, she began lobbying potential community and corporate sponsors who might be willing to contribute toward the $106,000 it takes to run a summer Freedom School. There are currently 130 Freedom School sites in 27 states, seven in South Carolina.

ATK Completes Final Milestone for Liberty under NASA's Commercial Crew Development-2 Program

Posted: at 11:15 pm

ATK successfully completed the last Liberty space transportation system milestone under the company's unfunded Space Act Agreement (SAA) with NASA for the Commercial Crew Development Program (CCDev-2).

The final milestone under the SAA was a Program Status Review (PSR) for the Liberty system. During the PSR, the Liberty team presented NASA with detailed progress of the program, including integrated master schedule, DAC cycle status, system requirements, software status, flight test plan, system safety review, ground processing certification plan and schedule for initial operation capability.

The CCDev-2 Liberty SAA enabled NASA and the Liberty team to share technical information related to the Liberty transportation system during the preliminary design review phase of the program. ATK completed five milestones and held three Technical Interchange Meetings, all on internal funding.

"It has been a privilege working with NASA to complete the SAA for the Commercial Crew program," said Kent Rominger, ATK vice president and program manager for Liberty. "The feedback we received from the NASA Liberty team has helped further the development of the entire system and we believe ensures the program is on target for Liberty to provide a capable and safe commercial transportation to the International Space Station (ISS) by mid-decade."

Currently, Liberty's schedule includes unmanned test flights in 2014 and 2015, followed by the first crewed flight in late 2015 with Liberty astronauts. Commercial operational flights to take NASA astronauts to the ISS would begin in 2016.

ATK also hosted a Liberty Supplier conference the day following the PSR. This meeting, held in Florida, brought together more than 20 of Liberty's major suppliers to support Liberty development activities.

"Our supply base is critical to Liberty's success as we move quickly through development of the entire system," said Rominger. "As a commercial program we need to ensure we are a strong team in order to provide the best service and grow a profitable business."

About Liberty

Liberty is a complete commercial crew space system that includes a composite spacecraft, abort system, launch vehicle and ground and mission operations, all of which were designed from inception to meet NASA's human-rating requirements. ATK is the prime contractor with Astrium and Lockheed Martin serving as major subcomponent providers. Additional subcontractors for Liberty include Safran/Snecma, Moog Inc., Honeywell, Astrotech Space Operations (ASTC), Aerojet, Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Teledyne Brown, Dynamic Concepts, Inc. and Hamilton Sundstrand.

The Liberty system team is located across 17 states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington. The commercial program will sustain thousands of jobs as well as bring approximately 600 new jobs across the country.

Is Trigmatic an Illuminati or Freemason?

Posted: at 11:15 pm

Entertainment of Tuesday, 17 July 2012

Source: Quame Junior

Duly accorded the accolade Africa's Most Versatile Rapper, Trigmatic who is currently recording his 3rd Studio album and rounding up his first official mixtape since his affiliation with the Blueprint District Company is raising lots of eye browses with recent happenings.

A few weeks back, the rapper made headlines when he was reportedly to have called Christians hypocrites.

The headline made strong waves and raised lots of eye browses and had a few question his religious stands and belief. Even though he professes strong Christian ties, latest information reaching us from sources close to the rapper indicates that the 2011 Rapper of the year might have ties with an occult group or hold alternating belief systems contrary to what he has been professing.

The rapper who is currently recording a mixtape which is set to be released later this year is set to be going haywire with some of the records hes putting on the mixtape.

Close sources indicate that some of the songs are made up of weird sounds and spiritual hymns that are untraceable to any known religious sect. We are also reliable informed that the track listing of the mixtape has titles like J.E.S.U.S and other mystifying titles.

The question then is very simple, where does Trigmatic stand? In a related development the rapper has dropped 2 new banging singles as a prelude to his 3rd album and first official mixtape after his street mixtape "A Stain on a Cloth".

We are watching. ***

The National Guard is one of the sponsors for Dale Earnhardt Jr., the most popular driver on the Sprint Cup Series.

The second amendment would be presented when H.R. 5856, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2013, is heard in the House. It is scheduled for Wednesday, according to a legislative schedule kept by the Majority Leader, Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va.

If either amendment survives and the bill eventually becomes law, it would bar the National Guard from sponsoring Dale Earnhardt Jr. in NASCAR and J.R. Hildebrand in IndyCar, the Army from sponsoring Tony Schumacher in NHRA and the Marine Corps from sponsoring the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Omani activists sentenced as crackdown on free speech continues

Posted: at 11:13 pm

The Omani authorities must drop the charges against a number of activists facing prison sentences merely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, Amnesty International said today.

In the latest case on Monday, a court in the capital Muscat sentenced five activists to jail terms of between one year and 18 months on charges including publicly insulting the Sultan as well as using the internet to publish defamatory and insulting materials, and publishing materials harming public order. They have been released on bail pending appeals.

Around 20 other Omani activists face similar prison terms after being charged with a number of offences connected to the exercise of their freedom of expression and assembly including protesting, inciting protests, insulting the Sultan, and obstructing the traffic.

Most are currently out on bail while their trials are ongoing.

These sentences are the latest phase in the Omani governments orchestrated crackdown on freedom of expression and assembly, which has been under way since last year, said Philip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Programme Director at Amnesty International.

All charges levelled against activists merely for engaging in peaceful activism must be dropped. If anyone is imprisoned on the basis of such charges, we would regard them as prisoners of conscience and call for their unconditional and immediate release.

The five sentenced on Monday were university students Mohamed al-Badi and Mona Hardan, who writes on Facebook under the name Wardat Dhuffar (Dhuffar Rose), poet Abdullah al-Arimi, Taleb al-Ebri, and photographer Mohamed al-Habsi.

All five were also handed fines of 1,000 Omani riyals (around US$2,600). They have been reportedly released on bail pending appeals.

On 9 July another poet, Hamad al-Kharousi, was sentenced to one years imprisonment and a fine of 200 Omani riyals (US$520) after being convicted of insulting the Sultan and using the internet to publish defamatory and insulting materials.

Hamoud al-Rashidi, a writer, was given a six-month sentence and a fine of 200 Omani riyals. They were both also released on bail pending appeals.

Judge Perry, state sued over free speech zone arrest

Posted: at 11:13 pm

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.

Chief Judge Belvin Perry is facing a lawsuit over his free-speech order for protestors outside the Orange County courthouse.

Mark Schmidter filed the suit against Orange and Osceola counties' top judge on Tuesday. The federal suit accuses Perry of restricting free speech.

The goal of the suit, according to Schmidter, is to throw out two administrative orders by Perry. One of the orders restricts free speech to small painted boxes on courthouse property, the other prevents the targeting of jurors as they walk into court.

"Because everyone has the right to petition the government on the courthouse steps, as long as you don't infringe on other people's rights and you don't impede traffic," said Schmidter.

Schmidter was arrested for violating both orders at the beginning of the Casey Anthony trial in June of 2011.

He was outside the boxes handing out fliers that suggest that jurors can and should vote not-guilty if they disagree with a law or find there's no victim.

"The judge does not tell the jury that they have the right to vote their conscious, and he doesn't tell them if there's no victim, there is no crime," said Schmidter.

"What we've got here is the most restrictive order I've ever seen dealing with free speech," said Schmidter's attorney, Adam Sudbury.

Before the administrative orders, Schmidter handed out fliers and talked to people as they walked from the courthouse parking garage to the front doors of the courthouse. Now he is restricted to a smaller area, well away from the entrance to the courthouse.
