Countdown to Marketing Freedom Begins in Western Canada

Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:24 pm

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire -07/31/12)- Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today marked the eve of marketing freedom for Western Canadian wheat, durum and barley growers. Minister Ritz was joined by Senator Donald Plett, local Member of Parliament Kelly Block (Saskatoon Rosetown-Biggar) and representatives from the western grain industry to mark the countdown to marketing freedom.

"In just 12 short hours, the doors to marketing freedom will, at long last, be opened," said Minister Ritz. "The Harper Government has delivered on our long-standing commitment to give western wheat and barley farmers the same freedom to make business decisions that other farmers in Canada have long enjoyed."

The countdown to marketing freedom began today at Innovation Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The location highlighted the potential for greater investment, innovation and competition for the western grain industry in an open market.

The Harper Government's top priority is the economy, and the agriculture industry plays an important role in creating jobs and keeping the economy strong. Canada is the world's fifth-largest exporter of agriculture and food products, with last year's exports hitting an all-time high of more than $40 billion.

"It's an exciting time as we look forward to the historic day tomorrow when wheat and barley farmers across Western Canada will have the full freedom to run their own businesses," said Senator Plett. "Marketing freedom will allow our hardworking farmers to achieve greater success by dealing directly in the marketplace."

Liberty Ross: 5 Things You Don't Know About Rupert Sanders' Wife

Posted: at 10:24 pm

Together for more than 15 years, Liberty Ross always stuck by the side of her husband Rupert Sanders -- but everything changed on July 17 when the director, 41, was photographed in a steamy tryst with the heroine of his film Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart. Us Weekly revealed the photos one week later.

PHOTOS: SEE ALL THE PICS FROM KRISTEN AND RUPERT'S AFFAIR!

"It's really shocking," a Ross insider tells Us. "She has been with Rupert since she was 18 -- they got together when she graduated. He's the only love she's known."

Here, Us uncovers five details about the married mom of two whose world was rocked by her husband's indiscretions with Stewart, 22.

NEWS: 6 myths about Kristen's fling with Rupert

1. Moving to Los Angeles to further her husband's film career, Ross admits she's resistant to change. "I romanticized domesticity for a while and loved having a shopping list of groceries stuck to the fridge for the first time," she told YOU Magazine two weeks before the scandal broke. "But moving here and starting a life all over again was a lot harder than I had anticipated. I just didn't think it would be as isolating and daunting as it turned out to be."

2. Stewart earned her lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman partly due to her rapport with Ross. "Liberty really liked and trusted Kristen," explains a film source. "Liberty chose her to be in the movie based on how she and Kristen vibed and they got on well." Indeed, Ross confirmed to Celebuzz at the film's May premiere that "there is no better Snow White in my opinion. She is great." Ross landed her own small role in the film, playing the mother of a younger version of Stewart's character.

3. Prior to her turn in Snow White, Ross -- who got her big break at 19 when Mario Testino photographed her for British Vogue -- enjoyed commercial success as a model for lines including Burberry in her native U.K.

Mississippi Congressional candidate says Chicago and Boston mayors blocking Chick-fil-A "need to be introduced to the …

Posted: at 10:23 pm

GULFPORT -- South Mississippi congressional candidate Ron Williams said mayors vowing to block new Chick-fil-A restaurants because the company's president opposes gay marriage "need to be introduced to the Second Amendment ASAP."

Williams, a Libertarian candidate for the U.S. House District 4 seat, made that and other statements in a letter to the editor to the Sun Herald. But asked about the letter, he said his comments were "hyperbole, non clarity," and that "I don't want anybody to go shoot anybody, but I want people to understand what a slippery slope we can be on and what the purpose of the Second Amendment is."

His letter was in response to statements by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanual and Boston Mayor Tom Menino advising Chick-fil-A not to seek new franchises in their cities over CEO Dan Cathy's public opposition to gay marriage. San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl have made similar statements about potentially blocking the restaurant.

Williams said this is an abuse of government power and runs afoul of the First Amendment rights to free speech.

In his letter, Williams said: "Let me make it clear, the CEO is being punished by government officials because he exercised his First Amendment right of free speech. The Constitution is very clear. When government restricts and punishes the people for exercising their First Amendment rights, then we are to default to the Second Amendment (right to keep and bear arms). These two mayors need to be introduced to the Second Amendment ASAP."

Williams also wrote: "The correct response to these mayors would be to send troops or whatever to remove these men from office, by whatever means is necessary."

In the 2010 midterm elections, TEA Party-backed Republican candidate Sharron Angle, who unsuccessfully challenged Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, caused a stir with similar comments about the Second Amendment. She said that people were "looking toward Second Amendment remedies" over their displeasure with Congress and floated the possibility of armed insurrection if "Congress keeps going the way it is."

Williams said his letter was meant to remind people that "some things are worth fighting for, if they cannot be remedied by any other measure."

"I'm not saying anybody should go shoot these mayors," Williams said. "But politicians need to be reminded, our founding fathers were quite clear that it's quite possible for our country to fall back into the hands of tyranny ... I'm a thou-shalt-not-kill kind of guy, but these guys should be reminded of the Second Amendment ... I guess the word reminded would have been better (in the letter) ... I needed a thesaurus beside me."

Williams, of Moss Point, faces incumbent Republican Rep. Steven Palazzo, Democrat Michael Herrington of Hattiesburg and Reform candidate Robert W. Claunch of Diamondhead in the Nov. 6 general election.

Censorship, self-censorship and the Olympic spirit: Confusion over blocking of BBC content as Olympic rules kick in

Posted: at 10:23 pm

Chilling free speech in the name of brands, rights and commercialisation is not what promoting the Olympic spirit is about, says Kirsty Hughes

This piece was originally published on Huffington Post UK

Fridays opening of the Olympic Games, with the extraordinary spectacle created by Danny Boyle, ranging from the industrial revolution to the digital age, from childrens literature to the National Health Service, has received plaudits and praise along with some bemusement and criticism. It may be just as well though that it didnt celebrate another British icon, the BBC.

The impact of the commercialisation of the Games, with lucrative sponsorship and rights deals, means another British virtue freedom of speech is rather less free than normal for the duration of London 2012. A particularly disturbing example of this is the BBC which has said that due to rights restrictions various radio programmes, ranging from the prestigious Radio 4 Today news programme to the lighter Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show and Radio 5 Live, whether live or on iPlayer, may not be available to audiences abroad for the duration of the Games.

While the BBC World Service has a proud history of broadcasting into authoritarian regimes, faced with its lucrative rights deal for UK broadcasting of the Games, the BBC is blocking its own output from being available internationally. It has a helpfully succinct explanation of this on its own news site where it says: The BBCs agreement with the International Olympic Committee means we are not allowed to broadcast anything online outside the UK from the Olympic Park or Olympic venues. As a result this programme may need to be blanked for International listeners due to rights issues surrounding Olympic content in programmes.

Perhaps conscious of quite how ludicrous this is, and damaging to the BBCs own image and values, by Sunday the BBC had apparently carried out some damage-limitation negotiations with the International Olympic Committee so at least the Today programme could be restored to international listeners though the announcement of this appears to be confined to a small blog update which states:

After discussion, the IOC and the BBC have agreed that there is no need to block our international streams of Radio 4 programmes with a wide news agenda. Radio 5 Live (apart from the news programme Up All Night) and 5 Live Olympics Extra will remain available only in the UK.

We knew that the Olympic commercial brands deals had put money ahead of free speech Locog published months ago two lists of words that must not be combined at risk of legal action for breaching the brand/copyright rules. These include not combining the words games, 2012 or twenty twelve with, for example, gold, silver medals, sponsor or summer. But more examples keep coming in of the censorship effects, and the chilling of the right to peaceful protest.

Unauthorised YouTube videos of the Games are reportedly being taken down with alacrity. Meanwhile, a group of cyclists has been banned from cycling in Newham for the duration of the Games.

The Olympic charter celebrates a number of human rights, declaring that: The practice of sport is a human right Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement. The charter makes no commitment to that other key and universal human right freedom of expression. But chilling and censoring free speech in the name of brands, rights and general commercialisation is surely not quite what promoting the Olympic spirit is all about.

China Criticizes US Report on Religious Freedom

Posted: at 10:17 am

China said Tuesday that a U.S. report describing repression of religion in China and elsewhere is a political tool based on groundless accusations that displays Washington's arrogance and ignorance.

The annual State Department report released Monday highlighted what it said was a lack of religious freedom in China as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and North Korea.

It said there had been "a marked deterioration during 2011 in the government's respect for and protection of religious freedom" in China, and that there was "severe" repression of religious freedom in Tibetan areas and the far western region of Xinjiang, home to a significant number of Muslims.

Tibetan areas of China have seen a surge in self-immolations since 2011, and the report said that tightened restrictions on Buddhist worship contributed to at least 12 of them last year.

The Chinese response came in a commentary published by the official Xinhua News Agency, which said the report was "continuing a notorious practice of blatantly interfering in the internal affairs of other countries."

"The annual report, largely based on unconfirmed media reports and groundless allegations from outlawed groups and organizations with ulterior motives, is nothing but a political tool used by the U.S. government to exert pressure on other countries, mostly deemed as its rivals," it said.

Xinhua said the U.S. was imposing its own standard on religious policies regardless of historic or cultural differences, saying the report was "full of prejudice, arrogance and ignorance."

It said religious freedoms were protected under China's constitution, saying only a few from banned "cults" and illegal "extremist religious organizations" aimed at splitting apart the country were punished.

Xinhua said the self-immolations were politically motivated, and part of a "scheme" by supporters of the exiled Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, whom China accuses of trying to separate Tibet from China.

The State Department said the Chinese government harassed, arrested or sentenced to prison a number of people for activities reported to be related to their religious practice.

Kristen Stewart, Liberty Ross Bond on Red Carpet: What Their Body Language Reveals

Posted: at 10:17 am

Foreshadowing photo?

Months before Kristen Stewart was caught kissing her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders by photographers in L.A. on July 17, the actress posed alongside his wife, Liberty Ross, on the red carpet of the blockbuster's London premiere May 14.

PHOTOS: Kristen cheats on Rob with Rupert: All the shocking photos!

In one pic taken at Empire Leicester Square, British model Ross, 33, who played the mother of a younger version of Stewart's Snow White in the film, appears to holds hands with Stewart, 22. Ross hugs Charlize Theron, who is standing between the two women, and smiles at the camera while also reaching over to Stewart. The Twilight actress, standing on the other side of Theron and next to her costar Lily Cole, stares back at Ross with a slight smile.

"This is the photo of the ultimate betrayal," body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass tells Us Weekly of the compelling snapshot. "[Kirsten has] got what's called an ambivalent smile. Her eyes aren't smiling, but she's got like a half smile of her mouth."

PHOTOS: Rob and Kristen's relationship

Late last Tuesday, Us revealed the exclusive photos of Stewart's shocking fling with Sanders, 41, from their steamy rendezvous on July 17. The next day, Stewart issued a statement apologizing to her real-life boyfriend and Twilight costar Robert Pattinson, 26, for the "momentary indiscretion" saying it "has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."

Although her photographed fling with Sanders didn't unfold until three months later, Glass speculates that Stewart has a look of guilt on her face in the May 14 shot.

"Liberty has gone and touched her and reached out. And she's looking like she's made a friend," the author of The Body Language Advantage explains to Us. "Liberty looks very happy, like she would not suspect anything. She's posing for the camera, she's reaching out to Kristen, touching her. She looks very relaxed and very much in control."

State Will Appeal 'Docs vs. Glocks' Ruling

Posted: at 10:15 am

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, July 31, 2012 -

Brandon Larrabee, The News Service of Florida

Gov. Rick Scott announced Monday that the state will appeal a ruling barring the state from enforcing the "docs vs. glocks" law, continuing the court battle over the line between patients' rights under the Second Amendment and doctors' rights under the First.

"This law was carefully crafted to respect the First Amendment while ensuring a patients constitutional right to own or possess a firearm without discrimination," Scott said in a brief statement released by his office. "I signed this legislation into law because I believe it is constitutional and I will continue to defend it."

The appeal challenges a federal court's ruling blocking enforcement of provisions of the law that would restrict doctors and other medical providers from asking questions about gun ownership during medical visits.

U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Cooke ruled earlier this month that the 2011 law, known formally as the Firearm Owners' Privacy Act, was built largely on anecdotal evidence and that lawmakers couldn't prove that Second Amendment rights would be jeopardized or that patients with guns might face discrimination.

"The state's arguments rest on a legislative illusion," Cooke wrote.

Backed by the National Rifle Association and the United Sportsmen of Florida, the bill (HB 155) was approved by lawmakers and signed by the Gov. Rick Scott in 2011. The bill easily passed both chambers along largely party line votes of 88-30 in the House and 27-10 in the Senate.

Supporters argued that doctors might refuse to treat patients who had guns in their homes or that patients who declined to answer the question might be turned away. They also raised the possibility that patients' privacy rights might be violated if their gun ownership were listed in medical records.

But doctors countered that knowing what is in a patient's home particularly a child's gives them an opportunity to advise their patients on how to stay safe.
