McCoughtry, Lyttle lead Dream past Liberty, 74-64
Posted: June 25, 2012 at 4:16 am
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The Atlanta Dream didn't panic when the New York Liberty made a run late in the first half to take a lead at the break. They just regrouped and took control of the game in the third quarter.
Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points and Sancho Lyttle added 19 to lead the Dream to a 74-64 victory Sunday.
''We just can't let outside things get in our head,'' McCoughtry said when asked what the team discussed after giving up a 10-point lead and trailing by two at halftime. ''We were a little frustrated with some calls, a little frustrated with the way we were playing, and how they were making their run. It's called adversity, it happens. It's the game.''
McCoughtry was 7 for 20 from the field and 8 for 10 on free throws in her return after missing two games due to a knee injury, helping the Dream (5-7) snap a two-game skid.
Lyttle scored nine points, Armintie Price had five and McCoughtry added five points and four rebounds as Atlanta outscored New York 25-10 in the third quarter to take a 13-point lead.
''It's not because of me. It's a team effort and everybody coming together, regrouping after a loss,'' McCoughtry said. ''(Lyttle) hit a couple of 3s ... she has the highest 3-point percentage shooting on the team and she's a post player. Armintie got some great rebounds, got fouled. Lindsey (Harding) is coming back slowly.''
Leilani Mitchell scored 16 points, Kara Braxton had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Cappie Pondexter and DeMya Walker added 12 points each as the Liberty (4-9) lost for the fourth time in five games. New York's lone win during that stretch came at Atlanta last Tuesday in a game McCoughtry missed.
Pondexter fouled out of the game late in the fourth quarter as the Liberty were trying to make a surge. She finished 4 for 17 from the field with seven turnovers.
''We couldn't make shots tonight,'' Pondexter said. ''They did a great job of adjusting. We were the last game they played and obviously they made a lot of adjustments. ... We just got to learn to be consistent. It's kind of up and down, it's kind of hard for us to get it together.''
The Liberty had 26 turnovers, which led to 31 points for the Dream. Atlanta had 16 turnovers, leading to nine points for New York.

HEY, LIBERALS: Turns Out Sandra 'Slut' Fluke Isn't A Friend Of Free Speech
Posted: at 4:14 am
Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University Law Center student who was unfairly and repeatedly excoriated by Rush Limbaugh as a "slut" for advocating that contraception be routinely included in healthcare coverage isn't a friend of free speech, it turns out.
In the New York Sunday Times Magazine, she makes several statements that suggest that, while she disagrees with what Limbaugh says, she certainly won't defend his right to say it (as Evelyn Beatrice Hall once suggested Voltaire might).
In fact, she says she regards unpopular speech as "problematic" and not worthy of protection by the federal government, at least when the feds take the form of the FCC the agency that's charged (officially, at least) with the preservation free speech on the radio.
In her interview with Andrew Goldman, she says:
First, let's give Fluke the benefit of the doubt. The Times has a history of misquoting people in its Sunday Mag interview slot, so who knows what Fluke's true sentiments are.
Having said that, Fluke -- who is 30 and therefore does not get an undergraduate pass -- should know better.
Taking her points in order:
In the interview, Fluke says she grew up in a conservative Christian household and came to feminism late, after taking a women's studies class at college that she thought she'd disagree with. Conservative Christians are, bar Muslims, arguably the most censorious, anti-free speech community in America. So let's hope Fluke continues to stray even further, intellectually, from her roots.

Think tank: freedom, not pay, is best motivation
Posted: June 24, 2012 at 2:14 pm
Cash-strapped businesses should look to incentivise staff by giving them a degree of autonomy.
How do you incentivise your staff without paying them more money?
It is a question that is keeping a growing number of owners of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) awake at night as they grapple with poor growth prospects and the impact of a double-dip recession.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, less than a third of SME employers are expecting to give pay rises to their employees in 2012.
For companies that have traditionally used the carrot approach of dangling the prospect of pay rises, promotions and bonuses in front of employees to spur them on, the realisation that the cupboard is bare is especially daunting.
One possible solution to the problem is to give a delayed monetary incentive in the form of share options, but that will only work if you give them to all employees, otherwise resentments will fester.
Realistically it will also only be an option for certain types of business. And if the current growth prospects for the business really are negligible, then it is debatable just how much of an incentive a tiny sliver of a future theoretical pot of gold will really be.
The good news for cash-strapped SME owners is there are many non-monetary ways to incentivise and motivate staff. The even better news is that these may well turn out to be even more effective than a pay rise would have been.
Indeed, using money as a way of motivating employees is actually not nearly as effective as people generally think.
Non-monetary factors, such as being given some autonomy over how tasks are carried out, the freedom to make decisions about issues that affect them and having achievements praised and acknowledged, have been repeatedly shown to be far more effective in motivating people. Flexible working arrangements and being given time off are equally valued.

Catholics, Protestants rally in Oklahoma City for religious freedom

A religious gathering punctuated by fiery speeches and standing ovations brought Catholics and Protestants together Saturday, united against a common enemy.
Frank Cargill, Superintendent of the Oklahoma District Council of the Assemblies of God, speaks during an ecumenical rally for religious freedom at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, OK, Saturday, June 23, 2012, By Paul Hellstern, The Oklahoman
Rally for Religious Freedom speakers, including a Roman Catholic archbishop, a Pentecostal leader and a Southern Baptist pastor, said threats to religious liberty should trouble all people of faith.
The rally at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City was hosted by a group of Catholic laity called St. Peter's Fellowship, and it drew about 3,200 people. Organizers said it was held in conjunction with the Fortnight For Freedom, a faith initiative born out of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' outrage over a U.S. Health and Human Services mandate that effectively requires faith-affiliated organizations to pay for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs.
In his speech that kicked off the rally, the Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, said the broader and most troubling concern about the federal mandate is what the U.S. bishops see as the federal government's infringement on religious liberty.
The government has picked this fight, and we cannot afford to back away from it. There is simply too much at stake for us all, Coakley said.
He reminded those in attendance that the Fortnight For Freedom is a rallying cry for the faithful to pray against threats to religious freedom, to help educate others about the issues at hand and to stand with American bishops in their battle against the mandate.
The government has no business defining religion or religious entities, Coakley said, adding that the religious freedom issue is not a partisan issue.

Making sense of the NRA's 'loaded questions'
Posted: at 2:13 pm
Published: Sunday, June 24, 2012 at 6:30 a.m. Last Modified: Friday, June 22, 2012 at 6:52 p.m.
On June 18, the Star-Banner published an editorial, "Dishing out loaded questions," that left a lot to be desired.
As in the past, the primary purpose of the editorial appeared to be to bash the National Rifle Association. Like many liberal newspapers, the Star-Banner refers to the NRA as if it were a monster in the forest, always plotting some evil deed against the population.
The fact is, the NRA is an organization made up of people just like you and me people who put great value on our constitutional rights, specifically on the Second Amendment. The NRA has millions of members. They come from all walks of life hard-working, mostly middle-class folks who might be your neighbors. They are law-abiding people who tend to be self-sufficient and believe in individual responsibility.
That's the real "gun lobby," as the paper calls it, not the intimidating bully described in the editorial.
What the Star-Banner has never seemed to realize in the 20 years I've lived in Marion County is that, because we live so close to so many outdoor recreational venues our many lakes, rivers and the Ocala National Forest this town has more than its share of hunters, fishermen, campers and outdoorsmen. A large percentage own firearms, which they use for hunting, target shooting and, yes, self-protection.
The June 18 editorial calls a recent questionnaire sent out by the NRA to candidates for sheriff "a web of intimidation." For example, one question asks: "Do you agree that no victim of a crime should be required to surrender his life, health, safety, personal dignity, autonomy or property to a criminal, nor should a victim be required to retreat in the face of an attack from any place he or she has a right to be?" The answers are: a) "Yes, I believe the Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground' is appropriate, and victims have a right to fight back without a duty to retreat"; or b) "No, I oppose the Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground' and believe victims should surrender to criminals or retreat to avoid fighting back." The paper says: "Fight back" or "surrender to criminals" the NRA doesn't allow for a middle ground.
I say, what middle ground?
You either fight or you surrender/retreat. By the way, in many cases, turning your back on an aggressor and retreating will get you killed.
The Star-Banner has an equally jaundiced view on the rest of the questions in the document sent to the candidates. But don't we as voters have a right to know where our law-enforcement personnel, especially the sheriff himself, stand on the issue of self-defense?

Freedom Fest celebration begins with an elusive duck

The official brochure presented by The Austin Area Chamber of Commerce says June 30, but for many listeners of KAUS Radio the magic moment comes at 7:35 a.m. Monday when the first clue in the Golden Duck Treasure Hunt is announced.
Although he doesnt know what the clue will be, KAUS Radios John Wright assumes it wont provide much to go on. The clue is important, however, because it will likely have a bearing on the next clue and the one after that, he explains. Its more fun when the game lasts.
Clues are provided by the 'Clue Crew,' he said, and we dont even know who they are.
What is certain is that the Golden Duck has become a solid fixture of the Freedom Fest program.
Its been going on longer than Ive been here, Wright said. I know it goes back to Cedar River Days. They dont even ask us if were going to do it anymore.
Hes also sure of the rules: The duck must be hidden on public land and inside the city limits; he or she cant be under water; cant be buried; and cant be more than five feet off the ground.
The rules are there to make sure that the hunt is safe, Wright said.
While there are 22 events listed in the Chamber program for Freedom Fest 2012, two will be new to most people.
The Raptor Center of the University of Minnesota has promised Festival Director Jeff Baldus that it will bring an American Bald Eagle to Family Day in the Park at Bandshell Community Park on July 3. The Centers 45-minute shows are set for 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Kids Game Area.
And the Austin Fire Department has challenged fire departments from the surrounding area to a battle of the barrel from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on July 4 at Ninth Place S.W. The contest decides who can best handle a fire hose to move a barrel down a cable. After the battle, kids will have an opportunity to give it a try.

Freedom defeat Things for sweep

It was a 1980s theme night at Consol Energy Park Friday, and when the Florence Freedoms Davis Harris stepped into the batters box in the top of the seventh inning, a picture of Rocky Balboa, the fictional pugilistic character made famous by actor Sylvester Stallone, was displayed on the large video board in right centerfield.
It was indeed appropriate because Harris would deliver a knockout punch to the Wild Things.
Harris, who at the time was 0-for-11 in the series, smacked a two-run RBI that was the key hit in a four-run inning that send Florence to a 5-3 victory and sweep of the three-game series.
It was a good series for us, Florence manager Fran Riordan said. We played very good defense, had good starts from our pitchers and our bullpen made some good pitches when we had to.
Harris hit came one batter after Florence scored the games first run, breaking up a pitchers duel between the Wild Things Jhonny Montoya (1-1) and Freedom lefty Andres Caceres (3-1).
Both starters were fun to watch tonight, Riordan said. Montoya threw strikes with two pitches and got outs with his changeup. Caceres covered both sides of the plate.
With both pitchers dominating, about the only excitement in the first six innings came when Washington third baseman Taylor Oldham lost a single and was called out for using an illegal bat in the first inning. Oldham, the Wild Things No. 3 hitter, singled to apparently put runners on first and second with one out.
However, Riordan came out of the visitors dugout and pointed out to home plate umpire Kirk Domanick that the barrel of Oldhams bat was smugged with reddish-brown paint, which Riordan said was illegal and came from rubbing the bat against a railing when the teams played in Florence.
Domaniclk and base umpire DW Brown looked at the bat, and though the paint mark had nothing to do with the flight of the baseball on the hit, ruled that Oldham was out and Washingtons Will Arnold had to return to first base. Brown also confiscated the bat and took it to the umpires room.
Riordan said that under normal circumstances, he would not have mentioned anything about the bat to the umpires.

'Liberty' Comes to Warner
Posted: at 10:12 am
For more than a century, the Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from France to the people of the United States, has been a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Dedicated in October 1886, Lady Liberty quickly came to represent hope for millions of immigrants who entered the U.S. through New York, as they set out to make a life for themselves in the land of dreams.
Ironically, the statues uplifted torch, meant to suggest enlightenment by her creators, instead represented a message of welcome to anxious immigrants who had survived an arduous journey. And, over time, the statues official Web site notes, Liberty emerged as the Mother of Exiles, a symbol of hope to generations of immigrants. She became an icon of immigration, reinforcing the idea of America being a melting pot of many cultures.
Over the last 126 years, since the statues dedication, millions of stirring stories of immigrants have emerged, but few have come to life like that of Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, making its world premiere at the Warner Theatre in Torrington by special arrangement with Theresa Wozunk. With book and lyrics by Dana Leslie Goldstein, music by Jon Goldstein, and under the direction of acclaimed New York stage director Igor Goldin, Liberty opens June 30 and will continue through July 14 at the Warner.
This is a fantastic opportunity for local audiences to see a professional production before it heads to New York, said Warner Theatre executive director John Bonanni. Our community of actors and volunteers are excited to inaugurate the Warners new professional development program, serving as an incubator for a commercial run in New York.
Liberty, according to the Warner, is a production that conveys the story of a young immigrant who arrives from France in 1884 amid anti-immigrant fervor. With powerful political forces working against her, and only a precious few on her side, she is befriended by fellow immigrants from all corners of the world. Libertys compelling and sometimes uncertain journey leads her to becoming the symbol of all immigrants, winning over the people of the United States and taking her rightful place in New York Harbor.
Featuring an entirely original score, Liberty has only been performed in pieces at venues such as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the New York Immigration Coalition. It was presented as a developmental workshop as part of Mayor Bloombergs Immigrant Heritage Week, as part of the grand reopening of the crown of the Statue of Liberty on July 4, 2009, and, most recently, as part of the official celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty National Monument last year. As the show prepares for an off-Broadway premiere in New York City, it marks a first for the Warner Theatre, which has never before developed and premiered a new musical prior to its commercial New York run.
Ive been with the show two or three years now, Mr. Goldin said, noting that he has been with other shows from the beginning. Liberty existed before I came aboard and though I havent worked on new shows by design, I tend to enjoy it more than established shows. I like to develop a production. Its certainly more challenging, and you become completely immersed in it. There is so much of you invested in it.
Twenty-year-old Madeline Brewer, who is stepping into the role of Liberty, feels the same way. Ms. Brewer graduated in May from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City, and said this is her first leading role. She relishes the opportunity to shape the character for audiences who will meet Liberty for the first time June 30.
Its been crazy, but its been an awesome experience, Ms. Brewer said enthusiastically after a musical rehearsal for the production. At AMDA, were taught how to make a role our own, how to develop a character, and I have certainly had the chance to do that with Liberty. Ive discovered some things come organically, such as how I relate to her. You definitely develop a character like this differently, because you cant see how others have done it, and thats great for me as an actress.
For a first gig, she said at a press event after she was introduced to the community, this isnt too shabby. Continued...

The Liberty lands on National Register

MURPHYSBORO The Liberty Theater has been a Murphysboro landmark from almost a century, and now its being recognized as a historically significant building by National Park Service.
The Liberty was recently named to the National Register of Historic Places, making it the sixth building in Murphysboro to garner the honor. Liberty Director Lois Murphy said the process took almost 18 months and involved hours of work.
There was lots of research and everything, she said. It was time-consuming, but I thought it was worth it and not too expen-sive.
Mayor Ron Williams said the national recognition is good for the city.
I think that The Liberty Theater being place on list is just a great, great thing Murphysboro, he said. With all effort thats gone into it with renovations and improvements, its finally paying off. It is for Murphysboro and the area a really neat building that has been saved from ruin.
Rachel Malcolm Ensor, an SIU professor and co-owner of Historic Property Consultants, helped write The Libertys proposal to the Illinois Historic Preservation Board, a first step in getting National Register of Historic Places recognition.
Criteria for making the list include significance in architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. Historic places may be associated with the lives of significant persons in the past, embody the distinctive characteristics of a type of place or era, or yield important information about history or prehistory.
For The Liberty, its connection was with events that made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of history.
Ensor said The Libertys close affiliation with Hollywood was an important factor in it being placed on the register.
The Liberty Theater falls right in line with the development of the cinema in the United States, she said. Originally The Liberty was a flicker theater for little 15-minute flicker pictures. As the movie industry changed so did the Liberty.
