Baseball: Freedom P Jose Rodriguez commits to Waubonsee CC
Posted: June 26, 2012 at 2:15 am
Mon. June 25, 2012 |
Freedom pitcher Jose Rodriguez has committed to Waubonsee (Ill.) Community College, former Patriots coach A.J. Leppla said Monday. With Rodriguez's commitment, Freedom has three college commits in the same class for the first time in school history.
Rodriguez (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) made two appearances for the Patriots (15-10) last season and earned a save in a 5-2 win over East Bay.
"He only threw a handful of innings or so for us, but was an outstanding young man to have in our program," Leppla said in a text message. "I've very proud of his hard work and dedication to his teammates and coaches, and I know he's going to do well up there."
Leppla, who resigned June 14 after three years, led Freedom to its first winning season in the program's nine-year history and advanced to the Class 7A region quarterfinals.
Kyle and Eric Schindler, twin brothers, both committed to St. Petersburg College in May.

Charlotte’s roster of Freedom Schools is booming
Posted: at 2:15 am
The stream of public-school students getting off the bus at the private Providence Day School last week illustrates a summer trend: Freedom Schools are popping up across Charlotte.
The schools, created by the national Childrens Defense Fund in 1992, are six-week summer programs designed to boost reading skills and self-confidence among disadvantaged children in elementary and middle school.
Staff, parents and students at Providence Day this summer joined the growing number of churches, universities and other groups hosting the schools. With 25 sites up from 15 last summer Charlottes program is the biggest in the country.
Energized by the surge of interest, Freedom School Partners aims to boost enrollment from 1,600 kids this year to 5,000 in 2016.
If we can solve summer learning loss and get kids excited about reading, we can change the world, says Executive Director Mary Nell McPherson.
With the economy still rocky, why are people stepping up to a challenge that requires an investment $60,000 for a 50-student site? The cost is $200 a week per child; families pay only a one-time signup fee of $35.
McPherson likes to talk about magic. Theres the buoyant energy of the morning Harambee ceremony, where college students lead younger children in songs and chants to psych themselves up. Theres the joy of adult volunteers reading to crowds of rapt children, who go home with arms full of books.
For the more practical-minded, theres a measurable chance to help struggling schools and students. Teachers spend nine months working to get kids up to grade level, only to watch gains slip away when summers are spent in front of TVs or video games. National research indicates that summer slippage is one of the biggest contributors to the gap in academic performance between children of poverty and their classmates from middle- and upper-income families.
Schools help Freedom Schools identify children who need some academic help and arent likely to get good summer enrichment activities otherwise. The scholars, as participants are called, spend their mornings reading, in groups and on their own, with lots of access to stories about people who have achieved success despite obstacles. Afternoons are for summer fun and educational field trips, much like other camps.
UNC Charlotte researchers have tested Charlottes Freedom School students on reading skills for the last three summers, and found that at least 90 percent held steady or saw gains.

Fuel Freedom’s Yossie Hollander Tells Chapman University TEDx Conference How to “End Our Oil Addiction”
Posted: at 2:15 am
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Fuel Freedom Foundation Co-Founder Yossie Hollander told the first TEDx audience at Chapman University on June 21st that American consumers could have $2-a-gallon transportation fuel tomorrow if alternative fuels like natural gas, methanol, ethanol and electricity were allowed to compete at the pump with gasoline.
More than 750 people attended the TEDxChapmanU conference, an independently organized event licensed by TED. An additional 11,000 people registered online to watch the event and Hollanders address, Ending Our Oil Addiction, streaming from the campus in Orange, CA. Hollander was among a group of speakers, including automotive innovator Henrick Fisker and Freedom Writers founder Erin Gruwell, who spoke at the event, titled: Icons, Geniuses and Mavericks.
Your car right now could be converted for $100 or less to run on liquid replacement fuels that cost $2-a-gallon, said Hollander. But it is not legal. Fuels exist today that are cheaper and cleaner than gasoline, are available and will generate American jobs. What we need is competition, like we have in every other market. I can buy whatever television I want, whatever cell phone I want. Americans should be able to buy whatever fuel they want to power their cars.
Standing in the way, Hollander said, are a closed fuel distribution system and outdated regulations. He noted, for example, that the electric carmaker Tesla Motors had to pay a $275,000 fine to the EPA because it didnt have an emissions certificate. Apparently, you need to test emissions for an electric car as well, Hollander said to widespread laughter. Electric vehicles, of course, produce no exhaust.
Hollander pointed out that the breakneck pace of urbanization in China, India and other developing nations will keep global oil prices high despite dramatic increases in domestic U.S. drilling and efforts to conserve oil use and make gasoline engines more efficient. The only way to lower gasoline prices significantly and permanently is to open the markets to competition from replacement fuels, he said.
About Fuel Freedom
The Fuel Freedom Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the U.S. economys oil addiction through the development of cheaper, cleaner, American-made fuels. Americans could easily convert their cars to run on replacement fuels for gasoline, but outdated regulations and entrenched commercial interests stand in the way. The Fuel Freedom campaign aims to remove barriers to competition so that natural gas, methanol, ethanol and electricity can compete on equal footing with gasoline at the pump and at the dealership. Achieving Fuel Freedom will lower fuel prices, create jobs, spur economic growth, reduce pollution, and improve national and global security. LIBERTY For five years, Brandi Chambers worked as a weaver at Liberty Denim, but when the mill closed in December she turned her attention to earning her high school diploma. On Monday, she sat in a room at the Pickens County Career and Technology Center using a laptop to register for general education diploma classes.
Chambers, who is 24, was one of about 120 people who visited a career fair at the center Monday. They applied for positions at 26 companies in the Upstate such as Walmart, Hampton Inn and YH America, an automotive power steering and air conditioning manufacturer. Others inquired about federal unemployment benefits and furthering their training and education. Tri-County Technical College, Pickens Adult Education and the Liberty South Carolina Works Center sponsored the fair.

Liberty lose to Dream
Posted: at 2:14 am
The Atlanta Dream didnt panic when the Liberty made a run late in the first half to take a lead at the break. They just regrouped and took control of the game in the third quarter.
Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points and Sancho Lyttle added 19 to lead the Dream to a 74-64 victory Sunday.
We just cant let outside things get in our head, McCoughtry said when asked what the team discussed after giving up a 10-point lead and trailing by two at halftime. We were a little frustrated with some calls, a little frustrated with the way we were playing, and how they were making their run. Its called adversity, it happens. Its the game.
McCoughtry was 7 for 20 from the field and 8 for 10 on free throws in her return after missing two games due to a knee injury, helping the Dream (5-7) snap a two-game skid.
Lyttle scored nine points, Armintie Price had five and McCoughtry added five points and four rebounds as Atlanta outscored New York 25-10 in the third quarter to take a 13-point lead.
Its not because of me. Its a team effort and everybody coming together, regrouping after a loss, McCoughtry said. (Lyttle) hit a couple of 3s ... she has the highest 3-point percentage shooting on the team and shes a post player. Armintie got some great rebounds, got fouled. Lindsey (Harding) is coming back slowly.
Leilani Mitchell scored 16 points, Kara Braxton had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Cappie Pondexter and DeMya Walker added 12 points each as the Liberty (4-9) lost for the fourth time in five games. New Yorks lone win during that stretch came at Atlanta last Tuesday in a game McCoughtry missed.
Pondexter fouled out of the game late in the fourth quarter as the Liberty were trying to make a surge. She finished 4 for 17 from the field with seven turnovers.
We couldnt make shots tonight, Pondexter said. They did a great job of adjusting. We were the last game they played and obviously they made a lot of adjustments. ... We just got to learn to be consistent. Its kind of up and down, its kind of hard for us to get it together.
The Liberty had 26 turnovers, which led to 31 points for the Dream. Atlanta had 16 turnovers, leading to nine points for New York.

Liberty 'Interferences' Not Beneficial To Sirius At All

Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI)is fighting hard to keepLiberty Media (NASDAQ: LMCA)from taking it over. This drama has beenunfoldingover the last few months. Liberty Media is the biggest shareholder for Sirius, and it has been expressing the desire to take complete control of Sirius. Liberty Media made its intentions officially known when it declared that it would buy more stocks in the company. It even hopes to replace the board of directors with candidates that are sympathetic to Liberty Media and its aims. This is clearly an attempt by Liberty Media tostep upits efforts to gain majority control.
This is not the first move that Liberty Media has made to try andgaincontrol. Earlier this year, the company attempted to become the de facto controlling shareholder of the company, even though it only had a 40% stake at the time. The Federal Communications Commission denied this attempt though, as a company must have a 50% stake or more to take control. Liberty Media has risen to the challenge, increasing its stake as much as possible. With time, Liberty Media may end up seizing even more shares and eventually gaining control of the company.
A few years ago, Liberty Media came to the aid of Sirius by giving the struggling company an enormous loan. This was in exchange for shares in the company. The companies signed an agreement, and Liberty Media promised not to make any attempts to take control of the company for a period of three years. You will not be surprised to hear that those three years came to an end recently, allowing Liberty Media to pursue its own agenda.
In response, Sirius has alsofileda request with the Federal Communications Commission, asking it todenythe attempts of Liberty Media to gain control of the company for a second time. Sirius stated that Liberty Media has yet to put forward a coherent plan for how and when it will take it over. It claims that this shows the company is not firmly dedicated to the plan and that it needs to make its intentions clearer. At this point, we are still waiting to hear the Federal Communications Commission's final decision.
Sirius stock declined following Liberty Media's clear declaration of its intentions, and I would expect the decision from the Federal Communications Commission to have a similarly significant effect. Shareholders should pay close attention to this situation.
Despite the situation with Liberty Media, Sirius is still actively trying toexpandits reach. Sirius recently teamed up withPenske Automotive Group (PAG). The auto company will offer three free months of Sirius service to buyers of used cars with factory-installed receivers. This should work to the benefit of both companies and have positive effects on the stocks.
Phoenix New Media (NYSE: FENG)is a competitor that is on the rise. Compared to others, Phoenix is a fairly new player in the industry, and it is based in China. The most recent news for this companyinvolvesthe collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada and should bring good results to the company and the stock. As a result of this agreement, Chinese users will have access to films distributed by the National Film Board of Canada. The films will be accessible through the NFB ZONE on the Phoenix website. This is the first time that Canadian films will be digitally distributed in China, and it should have a positive impact on Phoenix stock.
CompetitorPandora (NYSE: P)is currently in the spotlight because shares in the stock havefallensignificantly. An analyst pointed out that Songza is a more frequently downloaded free app forApple (AAPL)users than Pandora, and this led to the drops in Pandora stock price. Songza is a new introduction to the market, and it seems that its competitors should watch out. Its success is concerning, so it is understandable that some investors lost confidence in Pandora. That being said, Pandora still maintains its status as a leading provider of free online music services. This should not lead to further significant drops in the stock price, therefore, but one does need to keep a close eye on Songza to see how this situation plays out.

Posted: at 2:14 am
ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Liberty Media Corporation (Liberty) (Nasdaq: LMCA, LMCB) announced today that it received a favorable jury verdict in its case against Vivendi Universal S.A., et. al. which was tried in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The dispute arose out of a commercial transaction between the parties to the action and the former USA Holdings, Inc. that occurred during 2002.

Rihanna Or Azealia Banks: Who Wore The Egyptian Trend Best?
Posted: at 2:14 am
Rihanna and Azealia Banks wear the Egyptian trend at the BBC Radio 1 Hackney Weekend 2012 in London, England. Photo: Getty Images
This weekend, the London borough of Hackney played host to a major two-day music extravaganza put on by BBC Radio 1. The festival, cleverly titled Hackney Weekend *WINK*, attracted music heavy-weights (like Rihanna) and rookies alike (enter Miss Azealia Banks), not to mention a sea of well-clad concert-goers which obviously included the two aforementioned fashionistas. Serendipitously, both Ri and Banks opted for the growing Egyptian trend this weekend, but we want to know who you think wore this look best.
Illuminati rumors be damned, Rihanna and Azealia took Hackney Weekend on wielding evil eyes and pyramids but each with their own personal spin. Rihanna paired black denim cut-offs (ever the festival staple) layered over sheer bike shorts with an oversized symmetrical leopard print tee, but it's her leather motorcycle jacket that is the real focal point here. For her performance, she stepped out from a golden triangle in this jacket emblazoned with gold mirrored ankh crosses along the placket and two giant Eye of Horus symbols on the shoulders. She finished off her outfit with a pair of brand new Air Yeezy 2 sneakers which ALSO have hieroglyphics along the cross-strap and on the tongue. #attentiontodetail
Meanwhile, Azealia wore a long-sleeved maxi dress from the Spring/Summer 2012 Topshop Unique collection. The dress features a Keith Haring-esque Eye of Providence/all-seeing eye graphic across the chest and gradually thickening stripes along the sleeves and skirt. Banks accessorized with some heavy metal studded chokers and what look like purple plastic rainboots. This is a totally different take than Rihanna's, for sure, but you tell us: who wore it best?
