Save the Children Takes Stand Against Childhood Poverty, Launches Freedom from Poverty Campaign

Posted: at 6:15 am

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

An epidemic has swept across America, threatening the well-being of its most vulnerable residents, according to Save the Children, who launched today its Freedom from Poverty campaign to give a voice to the 16 million children bearing the brunt of the U.S. poverty crisis.

Artist ambassadors Jennifer Garner, Julianne Moore and American Idol judge Randy Jackson have already signed the Freedom from Poverty pledge, whose aim is to have 15,000 signatures from supporters by campaigns end on August 14.

Today, one in four kids is living in poverty. But it doesn't have to stay that way, said Randy Jackson, who supported Save the Childrens post-Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in New Orleans, La. We all have to do our part to help turn around the childhood poverty crisis and make sure that every kid gets a fair start in life."

The goal of the Freedom from Poverty campaign is to shine a light on this crisis impacting a quarter of children across the United States who know all too well what it means to go without.

Living in poverty can mean having little or no food on the table, no safe place to sleep at night, no electricity or running water, said Carolyn Miles, Save the Childrens President and CEO. Poverty also means not having books to read and falling 18 months behind ones peers by age four, never catching up. It means being trapped in the cycle of poverty for life.

In addition to raising awareness of this hidden crisis, Save the Children works to break the cycle of poverty and improve the lives of children by ensuring they have the resources they need. Through initiatives like U.S. child sponsorship, children gain access to a quality education, books, computers, after-school learning, physical activities and healthy snacks.

From the foothills of Kentucky to the deserts of Arizona, U.S. sponsorship supports proven programs that are changing the future of children who are all too often forgotten. Children like Tracie Hays

My sponsors helped inspire me to achieve success. They encouraged me to go to school, try hard and do well so that doors would open in my future, said Hays, who benefited from Save the Childrens sponsorship program as a child growing up in poverty-stricken rural Kentucky. Hays went on to graduate from high school with honors, receive a full college scholarship and complete a masters degree in education.

Lady Liberty headed to Woodring

Posted: at 6:15 am

ENID There will be a homecoming, of sorts, Saturday afternoon at Enid Woodring Regional Airport.

Lady Liberty, an A-26 Invader bomber, is being relocated from Oklahoma City to Woodring by its owners, the American Airpower Heritage Museum, a division of the Commemorative Air Force.

After making a couple of passes over Enid, Lady Liberty is expected to touch down at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodring.

Im ecstatic, said Enid Woodr-ing Regional Airport manager Dan Ohnesorge. It is a neat airplane, a neat addition to our tenant fleet.

A training version of the A-26, the TB-26, was used for advanced pilot training at Vance Air Force Base from World War II until 1955. A TB-26 static display currently is on display outside the wing headquarters building at Vance.

Lady Libertys home hangar at Oklahoma Citys Wiley Post Airport is being sold, Ohnesorge said, so its owners contacted him about relocating to Enid.

Our old city hangar was coming open and we were looking for a tenant, Ohnesorge said.

Ken Larcher, one of the aircrafts pilots, flew up to look at the hangar, and decided it fit his groups needs.

It fit the decor of a World War II-type bomber, Ohnesorge said. It is a round-top hangar. It is rustic. Plus, the airplane fits inside of it and the price was right.

We talked about a couple of issues, and we talked about how excited we would be to have them here.

Liberty-Lynx Preview

Posted: at 6:15 am

After getting off to the best start in WNBA history, the Minnesota Lynx came up short for the first time over the weekend.

They'll try to bounce back Thursday night at home, where they haven't lost since the New York Liberty last came to town.

Minnesota averaged 85.8 points in winning its first 10 games before losing 65-62 at Seattle on Sunday. The Lynx had a chance to send the game into overtime despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the second quarter and shooting 37.5 percent, but Maya Moore missed a deep 3-point attempt as time expired.

"I felt like it was on target, just a little short," Moore said. "With one second, having to inbound it and catch and shoot, I thought it was a great look. But it shouldn't have come down to that."

Moore had a team-high 14 points and Seimone Augustus scored 12 as the Lynx's two leading scorers combined to shoot 10 of 30.

"We felt like there were so many opportunities," Moore added. " ... There were so many things in the entire game that could've changed things. But lesson learned. I think this team will definitely take this one, remember it and use it to help us to be better in the future."

Minnesota now returns home, where it's won 11 straight - including last season's title run - since falling 78-62 to New York on Sept. 2. The Liberty shot 13 of 26 from 3-point range in that game and were led by Leilani Mitchell, who made six 3s and scored 24 points.

New York (4-7) is coming off its fourth win in six games, 73-60 in Atlanta on Tuesday. Cappie Pondexter had 14 points and a season-high 13 assists for the Liberty, who were coming off the most lopsided defeat in franchise history, 97-55 at Connecticut on Friday.

"I brought a great deal of energy tonight, which has been inconsistent with us," Pondexter said. "I feel like when we play with a lot of energy it allows us to play both ends of the floor the way we really want to."

Allowing an Eastern Conference-worst 80.6 points per game, New York held the Dream to 35.3 percent shooting.

SAF Says New Chicago Ruling Bolsters 2A Momentum

Posted: at 6:14 am

BELLEVUE, Wash., June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A ruling overturning part of Chicago's Firearm Ordinance on Second Amendment grounds reinforces the principle that people should not be denied the exercise of their right to keep and bear arms even if they've been convicted of a non-violent misdemeanor, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

The ruling by District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan relied on a strict scrutiny analysis of that part of the ordinance that prohibited Chicago residents from obtaining a city firearm permit if they have been convicted by a court in any jurisdiction ofan unlawful use of a weapon that is a firearm." But plaintiff Shawn Gowder argued that his misdemeanor conviction for unlawful firearms possession in August 1995 should not prevent him from being able to obtain a city permit. The court noted that Gowder had obtained an Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card, so he was not among the "persons who are not qualified to acquire or possess firearms" in Illinois.

"It's one more victory for the Second Amendment," said SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb. "This ruling affirms that people should not forever lose their gun rights over simple, non-violent offenses. If we allowed that, pretty soon people would be losing their Second Amendment rights for getting a speeding ticket."

In his ruling, which referred to SAF's winning case, Ezell v. City of Chicago, Judge Der-Yeghiayan significantly noted, "this court finds that the strict scrutiny balancing test would be the most appropriate test to apply in (this) case, since 'the right to possess guns is a core enumerated constitutional right.'"

The judge further wrote, "There is something incongruent about a non-violent person, who is not a felon, but who is convicted of a misdemeanor offense of simple possession of a firearm, being forever barred from exercising his constitutional right to defend himself in his own home in Chicago against felons or violent criminals. The same Constitution that protects people's right to bear arms prohibits this type of indiscriminate and arbitrary governmental regulation."

"We're proud that Judge Der-Yeghiayan referred to the Ezell case in his opinion," Gottlieb said. "We will continue our efforts to win back firearms freedom one lawsuit at a time."

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation's oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.
