The Secret World delayed two weeks

Posted: at 5:15 pm

Funcom's upcoming massively multiplayer online title The Secret World will be kept a secret for two additional weeks. The developer today announced on its forums that the game will miss its previously scheduled June 19 launch, and will now arrive for the PC on July 3.

Funcom chalked up the delay to "market reasons," saying its new early July release date places The Secret World in a "more positive launch window." This is the third time the game has been delayed. Funcom delayed the project in 2009 for "some months," and when Electronic Arts came aboard to publish in 2011, the game was assigned an April 2012 release date, which was later bumped to June.

Early access for the game--available to those who preorder the title--will begin on June 29, Funcom said. Previously, this pre-release play period was expected to begin on June 15.

Funcom also today announced the third beta weekend event for The Secret World will be titled Hell Raised, and will run June 15-17. During this weekend, players will get to try out the Illuminati and Dragon starter experiences, as well as the Templar. Additionally, gamers will be able to trek to the Savage Coast region, where players will face off against demon hellspawn.

Lastly, Funcom took the wraps off The Secret World's final beta weekend period, which will run June 22-24. This event will center on the game's player-versus-player experience, with users able to try out the Eldorado battlefield level and the warzone game mode.

Though The Secret World will release only for the PC on July 3, a console version has been in development since 2007. Last year, Funcom confirmed its principal focus was on the PC version of the game, but noted it was in fact still at work on a console iteration. This release of this SKU will be contingent on the success of the PC version, according to Funcom.

Published on May 25, 2012

The Secret World, Funcom's hotly-anticipated new PC MMO has been delayed by two weeks and will now launch on 3 July for "market reasons," that will "benefit the launch of the game," according to the developer.

Early access to the game for pre-orderers will now commence from 29 June.

The Secret World beta weekends will continue meanwhile on 15 June, with 'Hell Raised'.

"In this Beta Weekend players will be able to experience the Illuminati and Dragon starter experiences as well as the Templar experience," reads The Secret World site. "Players will also get to leave Kingsmouth and venture into the massive region known as Savage Coast, where they will soon find that the very gates of hell itself have opened up! This will allow players to experience the epic 'Hell Raised' dungeon where you will have to battle the demons of hell itself!"

The final beta weekend is set for 22 June, and will focus on PvP, including "warzone gameplay where over a hundred players clash together in persistent battle."

Dupuy: Trust me, you believe in gun control

Posted: at 5:14 pm

If you ask the typical hyper-political gun owner (and I have ... at Thanksgiving dinner), why its important to own a gun, theyll bark about the Constitution. Yes, the Second Amendment: The Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms Shall Not Be Infringed!

This of course is the slogan the National Rifle Association adopted in the 1970s. It was then that owning a gun became an absolute right endowed by God and the Constitution. A blessing passed down by our forefathers to obliterate game and protect our property. The NRA was founded in 1870 and for its first hundred years it was for gun control and didnt mention the Second Amendment as their cause.

Adam Winkler points out in his delicious book, Gun Fight, what we call the wild west had some of the strictest gun control laws weve seen as a nation. The shootout at the OK Corral took place, after all, because Wyatt Earp was trying to disarm the outlaw Cowboys in accordance with a Tombstone ordinance. The KKK was, among other things, a gun control organization. They were trying to keep guns out of the hands of newly freed slaves ... but still gun control.

The part of the Second Amendment omitted from the NRAs slogan is: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State... Yes, well regulated its in the Constitution!

Now, to some, guns are as sacred as scripture. If you ask, again, this typical hyper-political gun owner why they need to stockpile assault rifles, you will get an answer much like Pat Flynns, a recent candidate for a Senate seat in Nebraska. Really, we have our guns to protect ourselves against the government, number one, Flynn said in a debate right before the primary. Huntings number two. But protecting us against our government is number one. Remember, Flynn was trying to land a job in the government (he didnt win his partys nomination, by the way).

The idea is that we have to be just as armed as our government in order to be safer or have more liberty (or something). The U.S. government has unmanned drones armed with supersonic laser-guided anti-armor Hellfire missiles, bunker busters, and nuclear weapons. Are far-right politicians saying we need civilians to have shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles for protection? Of course theyre not. They actually do want limits on ownership.

And if you ask the most vehement gun rights advocate why gun owners shouldnt have nuclear weapons, Id bet youd get the same answer as to why we dont want every country to have the capability: Because they could get into the wrong hands.

So weapons-grade plutonium should be limited. But the ever-handy semi-auto Glock pistol with a 30-round high-capacity magazine is an absolute right?

A recent gun buyback drive in Los Angeles resulted in someone turning in a rocket launcher. Comforting.

So were not actually talking about limited vs. unlimited. We are talking about degrees of weapon ownership.

Jailed punk band Pussy Riot pushes free speech limits in Russia

Posted: at 5:14 pm

Three members of the Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot await trial.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Oslo, Norway (CNN) -- Here's a quick way to get arrested in modern Russia: Walk into a cathedral wearing a neon mask and carrying a guitar, stand on the pulpit and scream punk songs with lyrics like "Virgin Mary drive Putin away!"

Throw in a few more obscenities, and that's how three members of the punk band Pussy Riot ended up in Russian prison in early March, after criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin, who the group says is in bed with the Russian Orthodox Church and is unfairly cracking down on free speech.

Three of its members are still in prison and have been charged with "hooliganism," a crime that carries a maximum sentence of seven years, according to news reports.

Before that, the all-female, anonymous band had performed on top of a prison and on Red Square in Moscow, the capital. Their performances on YouTube attract hundreds of thousands of views. After the arrest, punk rockers in cities as far away as San Francisco put on public performances in solidarity with the group. Pussy Riot, in its own controversial way, has become a symbol of the protest movement in Russia.

"Everyone loves the Sex Pistols, and no one likes punk bands being arrested for singing," said Pyotr Verzilov, a manager for the band who talked with CNN at a recent human rights conference in Norway, where he was speaking on Pussy Riot's behalf.

The band has drawn comparisons to other Western punk bands, including the Ramones. "Unlike their British and American forerunners, however," writes Bloomberg Businessweek, "the Russian rockers have something very real to be angry about, starting with their own imprisonment."

Some say Putin is cracking down unfairly on the band at a time when protesters continue to gather in the capital; others that Pussy Riot defiled the church and should be punished. Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, called their cathedral performance blasphemy, according to RIA Novosti, the state-owned news agency.

A priest, writing in Russia Today, said that "to try to label such a performance in a church as a political protest doesn't make it any more acceptable."

Angola: Protect free speech as youth activists attacked

Posted: at 5:14 pm

A group of anti-government youth activists including rapper Hexplosivo Mental were attacked, beaten and some hospitalised during a meeting in the Angolan capital Luanda, prompting Amnesty International to call for a full and impartial investigation into the incident.

Hexplosivo Mental, known for his anti-government lyrics, along with Angolan activists and human rights defenders have been the target of numerous assaults and intimidations in recent months.

This brutal beating highlights the ongoing threat of violence that anyone speaking up for free speech in Angola faces, said Muluka-Anne Miti, Amnesty Internationals Angola researcher. The Angolan authorities must protect the rights of this group and others to freedom of association and assembly. They need to take steps immediately to protect these freedoms by ensuring that an independent investigation is carried out and those responsible are brought to justice.

This latest assault took place on Tuesday evening in the house of popular rap musician Carbono Casimiro, whose home reportedly came under attack from unknown gunmen last year.

The activists, who have set up the website Central 7311 which among other things documents violence in relation to peaceful demonstrations in the country, were also attacked while trying to hold a protest in Luanda in March this year.

Since March 2011, several demonstrations in Luanda calling for an end to President Jos Eduardo dos Santos 32 year rule have been met with excessive force by police, including the apparent improper use of dogs and firearms against those protesting peacefully.

Unknown individuals have reportedly infiltrated the demonstrations, vandalized property and beaten protestors and journalists covering the protests.

Police have failed to respond to violence perpetuated by these individuals and rather than arresting alleged infiltrators, protestors and journalists have been arbitrarily detained.

Youths who have helped organise peaceful protests against the President since last year, as well as some journalists who have covered these demonstrations, have also received personal threats from anonymous individuals telling them to stop demonstrating or face the consequences.

In March 2012 an anonymous group claiming to be defenders of national peace, security and democracy started distributing notes in Luanda stating that they would not allow protestors to create confusion and disorder..
