American Liberty (OREO) Expands West

Posted: at 1:50 pm

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire -03/21/12)- American Liberty Petroleum, Corp. (OTC.BB: OREO.OB - News), a company focused on reducing America's need for imported oil through discovering major, new onshore U.S. energy resources, announced background information on their acquisition of Paradise 2-12, a well located in Gabbs Valley in Nye County, Nevada.

The Western US is not only a target by American Liberty, but companies like Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY - News), whose California discovery is so large it could run into land controlled by Chevron (NYSE: CVX - News), ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM - News) and Royal Dutch Shell. The United States Geological Survey estimates the total, undiscovered, technically recoverable crude oil onshore in the US is 48.5 billion barrels, a majority of this falls into the Western half of the US.

According to the Baker Hughes rig count, the number of oil rigs on US fields has quadrupled in the past three years to 1,272. The US now has more rigs at work than the entire rest of the world. Marshall Adkins, Director of Energy Research at Raymond James, has recently stated, "If we continue growing anywhere near that pace and keep squeezing demand out of the system, that puts you in a world where we are not importing oil in 10 years."

Legislative Day Raises Awareness for Sportsmen and Second Amendment Rights

Posted: at 1:49 pm

Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,IPulaski) said Tuesday he was pleased to meet with sportsmen in Albany as part of the annual Sportsmen and Outdoor Recreation Legislative Awareness Day.

Assemblyman Will Barclay, second from left, attended the Sportsmen and Outdoor Recreation Legislative Awareness Day. He is among several who attended the event today to listen to speakers discuss the importance of the Second Amendment, our right to bear arms. Pictured at the podium is Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.

The event featured a keynote speech from Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President & CEO of the National Rifle Association (NRA), on the importance of ensuring the Second Amendment Constitutional Freedoms of all law-abiding New Yorkers. Tom King, President of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association (NYSRPA), industry leaders and thousands of outdoor enthusiasts from across the state attended this free event.

Hunting, fishing and trapping activities contribute more than $1.8 billion to our economy annually. Snowmobiling is a $476 million-dollar industry for the state, with over 130,000 registered snowmobiles on trails each year. There are also roughly 1.9 million New Yorkers who participate in ATV recreation.

It was great to see so many sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts rallying for Second Amendment Rights and legislation that helps promote the sporting industry today. We need to continue to rally to raise awareness and protect our right to bear arms. Downstate interests in the Assembly would like to make owning a gun more expensive by placing microstamping mandates on gun manufacturers. This technology is unproven and would place more costs on New York gun manufacturers, said Barclay.

An Assembly budget bill proposes microstampinga unique alpha-numeric or geometric code on the firing pin, identifying the make, model, and serial number of the pistol. Manufacturers would bear the cost of implementing this new regulation. The success of this technology is unproven and gun manufacturers have yet to devise technology that can ensure the make, model, and serial number of the pistol is coded into an expended cartridge.

Our Second Amendment is the core principle that defines our nation. There is no greater freedom than to own a firearm to protect ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation, said LaPierre. Thus, Second Amendment freedom is, truly, the heart and soul of America. And, it is all at stake this year. This is a fight for our values and for the freedom we believe in. Its all or nothing and gun owners, everywhere, from Albany to Seattle, and from Anchorage to Miami are signing on. The fight is on and the NRA is ALL IN!

PFF supports no-treason call for West Papua

Posted: at 1:49 pm

Monday, March 19, 2012

PFF, Rarotonga, COOK ISLANDS --Three years in jail for five West Papua activists is a further erosion of free speech and other human rights for the province, says the Pacific Freedom Forum. There is no treason in freedom of expression shared peacefully, says PFF chair Titi Gabi, in Indonesia, or anywhere else. The five men were sentenced by judges after being convicted for a public speech. Made last October, leaders at the Third Papua Peoples Congress ended the speech with a Declaration of Independence in front of a crowd of thousands. Shortly after the activist event, three people were killed when security forces opened fire on dispersing crowds. None of the military involved have been given jail terms. Under guarantees of free speech, strong opinion must be allowed without risking unconstitutional persecution by the state, says Gabi, a Papua New Guinea journalist. "The statements which so riled the Indonesia government were made during a peaceful assembly. Matters reportedly turned ugly when the military fired guns into the crowd. An unarmed, peaceful gathering sharing political ideas can hardly be labelled as an act of terrorism." The Pacific Freedom Forum supports calls from Human Rights Watch and other groups for convictions to be dropped against the group now dubbed the Jayapura Five.

The convicted men are Selpius Bobii, a social media activist; August Sananay Kraar, public servant; Dominikus Sorabut; film maker, Edison Waromi, a former political prisoner, and Forkorus Yaboisembut, a Papua tribal leader elected president at the congress. Co-chair of the Pacific Freedom Forum, Monica Miller, says that authorities in Indonesia must "follow through on the constitutional mandate to open up public spaces for all people of West Papua to share ideas safely with each other and their leaders. Miller says an impression of widespread injustice is growing worldwide, quoting a report from the US-based Freedom House on contradictory rulings within the Indonesian legal system. Until they feel heard by their rulers and the global community, the people of Papua will continue to pay the ultimate price for trying to speak freely on their lives, says Miller. Sentencing of the five in west Papua comes as Pacific journalists prepare to attend a regional media meet in Fiji. Miller called on colleagues at the forthcoming Pacific Media Summit in Suva this month to also focus outside Fiji, on wider challenges facing freedoms of speech, including in west Papua. Journalists and the media must balance the news needs of their local markets with reporting urgent regional issues, says Miller. The continued erosion of free speech in west Papua goes against Article 19 of the 1946 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Indonesia is a signatory.--ENDS

Rihanna’s ‘Illuminati’ Tattoo and Other Celebs with Tiny Cross Tats

Posted: at 2:22 am

Rihanna recently got a tiny, tilted cross tattoo inked on her collarbone, with her favorite tattoo artist Bang Bang saying that he put it there so that she could easily hide it with a necklace if she wanted to.

It seems like a simple display of the singer's faith, but the website Media Take Out speculates that it's an actually an Illuminati symbol - Masons supposedly used a slanted cross as a symbol of their secret society centuries ago.

It's hard to imagine RiRi being a part of the shadowy organization that many conspiracy theorists suspect is running the world - after all, why would she want to advertise her involvement in something that's supposed to be a secret? However, some people really seem to believe that many musicians are part of the Illuminati - there were even rumors that Beyonce and Jay-Z's daughter Blue Ivy was given her odd name as an ode to the organization. According one conspiracy theorist, I.V.Y. = Illuminati's Very Youngest and B.L.U.E. = Born Living Under Evil.

But back to RiRi's ink. It's not like tiny cross tattoos are unusual in Hollywood, and it's likely that it's just a coincidence that hers was tilted (it looks like it's just following the line of her collarbone). Other celebs that have gotten tiny cross tattoos include Miley Cyrus, who displayed her faith by having one inked on one of her fingers. But unfortunately her faith came under fire from some fans later on when she was attacked for also getting an equal sign inked on another finger to show her support for gay marriage.

Her fellow former teen star Demi Lovato has a slightly larger cross tattoo inked on her right hand - she placed it so that it can be seen while she's holding her microphone to show all her fans that she's a devout Christian. Her tats obviously mean a lot to her - she even turned the "Stay Strong" tattoos on her wrists into the title of an MTV special documenting her tough road to recovery after rehab.

Singer Ke$ha has a much messier cross tat on her wrist - she let one of her friends ink it there as a way to commemorate the day she finished recording an album. However, he's evidently not the best tattoo artist, because this is how she describes the tat: "He gave me a cross. Or one could call it a t. Or an x." She's such an avid tattoo fan that she even tried to show off her own skills by inking a dollar sign on one of her fans.

Nicole Richie probably has one of the prettiest cross tattoos - she has a delicate cross on a rosary around her left ankle. According to the artist who inked it, girls have poured into his shop requesting the same tat.

So which celebrity tattoo do you like best? Or do you think that celebs shouldn't wear their faith on their skin? Sound off in the comments!

Sen. Wyden demands vote on American copyright, patent treaties

Posted: at 2:21 am

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) is a long-time opponent of the secretly negotiated Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Today he introduced an amendment to a Senate "jobs bill" that would force ACTA to come before Congress for approval. A second amendment would make the US Trade Representative, which negotiates US trade deals, drop the veil of secrecy around its copyright and patent negotiations.

USTR currently insists the president can ratify ACTA without the usual Senate sign-off on treaties. The current legal thinking seems to be that Congress delegated this authority to the executive branch by passing 2008's PRO-IP Act, which contained a general call to cut down on counterfeiting, etc.

That legal approach is contested; Wyden's amendment simply overrules it. "Notwithstanding section 303 of the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008 (15 U.S.C. 8113) or any other provision of law," it says, "the President may not accept, or provide for the entry into force with respect to the United States of, any legally binding trade agreement that imposes obligations on the United States with respect to the enforcement of intellectual property rights, including the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, without the formal and express approval of Congress."

His second amendment tries to force a change in how the whole process around such treaties is handled. Right now, the US attempts to keep its negotiating positions a secret. What vital national security interests could be at stake if the public knew USTR was promoting "graduated response" laws or proposing changes in ISP liability? Wyden doesn't believe there are any.

Even with ACTA, where the text was officially kept secret until it was too late to make major changes, unofficial leaks stirred public debate and ultimately removed many of the most odious provisions from the final text. The "next ACTA" is the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), a regional trade deal involving countries from around the Pacific Rim. Wyden wants to ensure the public doesn't have to rely on leaks to find out what's being proposed in its name.

He proposes a rule that would force USTR to release any negotiating proposals already shared with other nations in the TPP talks if they apply to "intellectual property, the Internet, or entities that use the Internet, including electronic commerce." In the future, USTR would have to post such documents from all trade negotiations within 24 hours of being shared with other countries.

Spitzer Tells Judge Free Speech Protects Against Libel Suit

Posted: at 2:21 am

By Don Jeffrey - Tue Mar 20 20:11:41 GMT 2012

Lawyers for Eliot Spitzer, the former New York governor, asked a federal judge to dismiss a libel suit over an article he wrote, claiming it was accurate and protected by the Constitutions First Amendment.

Spitzers lawyers argued before U.S. District Judge Paul Oetken today in Manhattan that the article he wrote for the online magazine Slate didnt libel former Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC) executive William Gilman.

These sentences cant be about Mr. Gilman, Lee Levine, a lawyer for Spitzer, told the judge, referring to the part of the article Gilman claims defames him. The piece doesnt say Mr. Gilmans verdict was vacated but he was guilty anyway.

Oetken said he will rule later on the motion.

Gilman, who worked at Marsh & McLennan from 1976 to 2004, was indicted in 2005 after an investigation by then-Attorney General Spitzer over practices in the insurance industry. He and other executives were charged with a conspiracy to fix prices and rig bids on insurance contracts. The state had filed a bid- rigging lawsuit against Marsh in 2004. Gilman was fired by the company, according to court papers.

After an 11-month trial without a jury, New York Supreme Court Justice James Yates found Gilman and co-defendant Edward McNenney guilty of one count of restraint of trade and competition. Yates vacated that verdict in July 2010 after ruling that certain evidence wasnt disclosed by the prosecutors to the defense. In January 2011, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman declined to retry the men and dropped the charges against them.

In August 2010, the Wall Street Journal ran an editorial critical of Spitzers investigation of Marsh & McLennan. In response, Spitzer wrote the piece for Slate the same month. In it, he noted that Marsh & McLennan agreed to pay $850 million to customers for reimbursements of premiums in connection with the investigation. He also said that unnamed Marsh executives pocketed increased fees and kickbacks.

This wasnt journalism, Jeffrey Liddle, a lawyer for Gilman, told the judge. This was an attempt to justify one person at the expense of another.

Gilman sued Spitzer and Slate Group LLC in August 2011. Slate is owned by Washington Post Co. (WPO)
