REPREVE(R) Renewables' Freedom(TM) Giant Miscanthus Used by Cool Planet to Produce Gasoline
Posted: March 2, 2012 at 8:14 pm
SOPERTON, Ga., March 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cool Planet Biofuels, a developer of negative and neutral carbon fuels, announced its use of REPREVE(R) Renewables' FREEDOM(TM) giant miscanthus to manufacture tank-ready gasoline. REPREVE Renewables provided feedstock to Cool Planet Biofuels for testing in its process. By using FREEDOM, Cool Planet reported that they were able to achieve a 4,000 gallons/acre conversion rate, which outperforms other feedstocks such as corn, switchgrass and wood on yield. The resulting fuel, claims Cool Planet, is chemically identical to gasoline from fossil fuel and is currently being road-tested in cars in California.
REPREVE(R) Renewables, LLC, is a leader in biomass energy solutions and the exclusive supplier of FREEDOM giant miscanthus. FREEDOM was developed at Mississippi State University as the best bioenergy crop for growing in the Southeast. REPREVE Renewables is focused on commercializing FREEDOM giant miscanthus by providing planting material and growing protocols to growers in the Southeast United States.
Phillip Jennings, a REPREVE Renewables founder, said the development from Cool Planet is a big step in bringing drop-in gasoline from grass to the marketplace.
"When gasoline can be made from plants, it's important to grow the most plant material per acre," said Jennings. "The yield per acre of FREEDOM giant miscanthus is unmatchable among purpose-grown energy crops. We look forward to the day when producing 3,000-4,000 gallons of gasoline per acre of land is done on a commercial scale. REPREVE Renewables is ready to do our part to make it happen."
The announcement demonstrates what is achievable under optimum growing conditions in the Southeast United States. Cool Planet estimates under more routine growing conditions, an average yield of 3,000 gallons per acre. In two years, Cool Planet has accumulated a list of investors that includes oil giant BP's venture capital arm, BP Technology Ventures; General Electric Co.; ConocoPhillips; Constellation Energy Group; NRG Energy Inc.; Google Ventures; Shea Ventures; and North Bridge Venture Partners. REPREVE Renewables continues to work with companies like Cool Planet Biofuels to bring renewable energy to commercial scale.
About REPREVE Renewables:

Freedom Friday: Cracking God
Posted: at 8:14 pm
Editors note: Every Friday throughout the run of From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen, we will feature unique and original posts by staff writers, musicians, visual artists, and more, with a focus on a range of issues including protest, dissent, and the role of art in politics and political campaigns. Todays post is from Courtney Swafford of Wilmington, DE who was recognized with a Scholastic Art & Writing Award for the following story.
Wolf, featured in the ART.WRITE.NOW. exhibit, was created by Komrorng Bo, a graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia.
To write is to share. I write in order to communicate to others, in the hopes that they can somehow appreciate what I mean to tell them. When I won my medal from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, that hope was realized; I knew that Id succeeded, and I was beside myself. Knowing that someone else had read my work and understood me, that they could connect to it themselvesthis knowledge gave me affirmation that Id never had before.
The world often judges by class rank or sports trophies, and as a homeschooler I simply didnt have opportunities like these to prove myself. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards changed that. They gave me a sense of validation, not as a homeschooler compared to those from more standard forms school, but as a writer compared to other writers. Recognition like this is invaluable, and I cannot thank the people at the Awards enough for all that theyve done for me and for other young artists and writers.
Jesus face fell off a long time ago. Ive watched the spidery cracks spread through the paint of the icon from the day I first noticed them in sixth grade, as I pretended to watch the priest. Now the picture hangs in the small recess where the priest stands, at the front of the chapel. The niche is so small that the priest, old, fat and insipid, has to squeeze around the corner to get behind the pulpit. The poor lighting back there hits his crinkled face at odd angles so that it looks like a dress shirt thats been slept in. His sagging, crumpled skin scrunches and creases in an endless maze of flesh as he deadpans the Book of Judith to his audience of lethargic schoolchildren. No one really listens. They just stare, glassy-eyed, while the monotone slogs through the heavy air in the vestry. Who was Judith? Nobody knows, and nobody really cares. The air is too muggy for that. The priest reads on for a few lines more, then stops and intones, This is the word of the lord. Then he steps out from behind the pedestal, and his flowing sleeve brushes some flakes of paint off from Jesus hair. Theres a small heap of these paint chips on the floor under the painting. The priest steps on them every time he goes back there, grinding them into the burgundy carpet. Down in the pews, all of the students laboriously stand themselves up and pull out their Psalters. The books are old, the tune is old, 264 ShOrT ShOrT STOrY the words are old, and we cant read music. Our indistinct mumble flounders its way through the meaningless characters on the pages. No one knows the song, and no one really cares. After all, who wants to praise a faceless god?
Swaffords piece won a Gold Key, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers highest level of achievement on the national level.
ART.WRITE.NOW., a traveling exhibition featuring works by winners of the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, will be on display at the National Constitution Center through Wednesday, March 14, 2012.

Outside View: Why U.S. should protest conditions at Camp Liberty

If the United Nations won act regarding conditions faced by Iranian dissidents in Iraq, the United States must.

LONDON, March 2 (UPI) -- The mullahs ruling Iran have had little reason to be happy with the United Nations in recent weeks, being forced to cope with crippling sanctions because of their pursuit of nuclear weapons and being further isolated by the world community with every passing day.
And, at home, the government is divided and the people are restless, especially having seen the Arab Spring force long-term dictators from power. So the mullahs are happy to get any good news and find any friends.
On top of the list of these friends is the government of Iraq, which is doing its best to carry out Tehran's campaign to eradicate its main opposition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran and its main component, the People's Mujahedin of Iran.
Some 3,400 PMOI members have been living peacefully in Iraq for a quarter of a century but since the United States agreed to leave Iraq their life has been in turmoil. Acting to please his bosses in Tehran, Iranian Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has engaged in a campaign of harassment and then murder to drive these dissidents from their homes in Camp Ashraf, north of Baghdad.
Finally, with assurances from the United Nations and United States and after pleas by Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the Iranian opposition, Ashraf residents agreed to be transferred to Camp Liberty, a former U.S. Army base near Baghdad Airport, where they would be processed by the U.N. refugee agency before being relocated in third countries.
It sounded too good to be true -- and it was. The devious Maliki, either with complicity or sheer ignorance by U.N. officials, had turned "liberty" into imprisonment. What was supposed to be a temporary home with all the freedoms and dignities of Camp Ashraf became a walled enclosure with Iraqi police stations, rampant presence of Iraqi armed forces, sophisticated Iraqi listening devices atop the walls and living conditions unfit for animals, much less humans.
How did this all happen? How did the U.N. Assistance Mission to Iraq determine that the conditions at Camp Liberty met any humanitarian standards? How could the secretary-general's special representative, Ambassador Martin Kobler, declare his satisfaction with the arrangements at Camp Liberty that has all the markings of a prison?
Why won't the Iraqi government allow a bipartisan delegation of former high-ranking U.S. officials to go to Camp Liberty and see for themselves the conditions that Kobler and Maliki consider suitable?

Obama showing steady hand in foreign policy; Second Amendment needs 21st-century reworking – March 2 letters to the …

Obama stands tall in foreign policy
Considering the little worries that can keep me awake at night, I cannot imagine the stress President Obama must feel as he faces major foreign policy decisions.
Take Iran, for example. Should the U. S. launch a preemptive attack on Irans nuclear facilities to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons? That would be an act of war with unpredictable consequences.
Should we encourage Israel to attack Iran instead? Again, it could mean war with us being drawn into it. But doing nothing may entail consequences just as grim. Is there a diplomatic way out?
Thankfully we have a president with the maturity and intelligence to consult with the best Middle East experts, listen to their advice, encourage dissenting views and finally choose the path that is in the best long-term interests of the country, as he did when the SEALs went after Osama bin Laden. What a contrast with Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, who convinced themselves that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction!
And how fortunate we are that after determining the best course, Obama has the courage to take the necessary action despite the sniping from his critics, including the pathetic group of Republican presidential candidates who approach all foreign policy issues with belligerent ignorance.
JON MARKLEY Easton
Leaders of Islam should condemn violent backlash
I understand President Obamas attempt to assuage Muslim leaders outrage concerning the burning of several Qurans in Afghanistan recently. The violent, militant extremist groups representing Islam in Afghanistan reacted to the accidental burning with violent attacks that killed several Americans.
I can understand outrage about someone destroying a religions holy books. However, it overwhelms my feelings of compassion when these extremists kill and destroy because of something like burning a Quran.

Lebanese hip-hop pioneer rapping for free speech
Posted: at 8:12 pm
BEIRUT: Im not here to entertain you, says Rayess Bek. Neither am I going to start a revolution Im just fighting for freedom of speech.
Formerly one-half the hip- hop duo Aksser, known to his mum as Wael Kodeih, Rayess Bek raps in Lebanese Arabic and French and is regarded to be an Arabic hip-hop trailblazer.
A Paris resident these days, the trailblazer was back in Beirut where he performed a number of shows around last weeks Laique Pride protestations. This four-day-long series of shows was also the occasion for the launch of his newest CD. Khartech 3a Zamann/ lHomme de gauche (Scribbling out the Past and The Leftist) is a collection of songs divided into two parts one in French and one in Arabic.
He may be living in Paris, but Rayess Beks roots are in Lebanon. Like many who have studied and worked overseas, the rapper says his constant state of transition sometimes makes him feel a little schizophrenic.
His lyrics are expressive of Lebanons politics, wars, confusion and identity. Local audiences sometimes consider these lyrics harsh and theyve long felt the weight of the censor.
The tunes are aimed the younger generation, one that, in Rayess Beks view, often finds itself drowned by disillusionment, blinded by consumerism and searching for some clarity.
Rayess Bek says that his aim is not to change peoples views but simply to express the frustrations that people would like to express, but which, more often than not, they are unable or unwilling to voice. I dont write about fiction, he continues. I write about boundaries.
He means political boundaries not just physical barriers like walls and borders, but moral, social and cultural ones.
These are the boundaries that remain engrained in our minds, like the Green Line, like the line between the occidental and oriental, he said. These, he continues, are the ones that affect the social spaces that we inevitably have to share.
Im more of a journalist than an artist, the rapper adds, but not in the objective sense. That doesnt exist.

Crowding solution for Freedom Hill not so clear
Posted: at 9:30 am
The solution might seem simple.
Freedom Hill Elementary School in Vienna exceeds its capacity by about 100 students. Neighboring Lemon Road Elementary School in Falls Church is about 100 students under capacity. Why not shift 100 students from Freedom Hill to Lemon Road?
Parents of students at these schools say it isnt that easy because the debate is about which students get shifted. This week, Fairfax County Public Schools staged two community meetings to get parents views on two options of how to reassign students from Freedom Hill to Lemon Road.
Option A would reassign a portion of students living in Idylwood Apartments, located on the northwest side of Idylwood Road. Option B would reassign students living in Marshall Heights and Dominion townhomes and a portion of Idylwood Apartments to Lemon Road.
Both options would decrease student enrollment at Freedom Hill, as well as lowering the schools percentages of English for Speakers of Other Languages students and students eligible for free and reduced-price meals.
While Option B would see a greater transfer of students to Lemon Road, Option A shows a greater growth in students eligible for ESOL and free and reduced-price meals programs for Lemon Road, which would go from 21.7 percent ESOL to 28.4 percent and from 25.3 percent free and reduced-price meals to 30.8 percent.
The PTA believes Option B would be the most fair to both schools, said Lemon Road PTA President Jenn Brunner. It will bring the most students over to Lemon Road.
Additionally, she said the socio-economic demographics of the students who would be shifted under Option B more closely match the demographics at Lemon Road.
Freedom Hill parents, however, say they take a different view of these options.
Geographically, it makes more sense to us to keep those townhouses, said Freedom Hill parent Dianne Gurdak. I think anyone at Lemon Road would say Option B because they get less free and reduced lunch. They get less ESOL. And theyll say they are helping Freedom Hill, but its only 10 kids or so [more under Option B].

Basketball roundup: Liberty boys advance to first state playoffs
Posted: at 9:30 am
The Liberty boys basketball team is in the Class 5A state playoffs for the first time in school history.
It's reward? A first-round game Saturday against Benson, the PIL champion and the team widely considered the favorite to win the state championship.
"They are tough," Liberty head coach O.J. Gulley said. "They have a bunch of athletes, a bunch of guys who are basketball smart and can play multiple positions. They have a lot of confidence. They've definitely got it rolling right now."
The Techmen (22-2), ranked second in the OSAA power rankings, have won 21 straight games since losing to Lake Oswego in their opening game of the Les Schwab Invitational the day after Christmas. They beat perennial power Jefferson three times and didn't lose once in PIL play.
For some perspective, the last time the Techmen played Madison they won 87-36 on Feb. 21. Liberty, ranked 21st, needed a fourth-quarter comeback to beat Madison 60-53 in a play-in game on Monday.
But that doesn't mean Gulley is resigned to a loss.
"It's important for us to say, 'Hey, anything can happen,'" he said. "If they go into the game thinking they can't win then they're already defeated."
And despite the school's paltry history of basketball success, he said his team isn't just satisfied with making the playoffs. Their goal from the season's start, Gulley said, was to advance to the state tournament at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
And now they're one win away.
"They're excited," Gulley said. "We're kind of in uncharted territory."

Trimmer Liberty Bank selling branches
Posted: at 9:30 am
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa --- Liberty Bank, which has operated under tightened regulatory scrutiny since July, is trying to get leaner while it intensifies its focus on eastern Iowa, according to its top officer.
The changes will lead to perhaps 100 fewer employees than the 280 it had before, said John Rathjen, Liberty's CEO and president.
The changes do not affect the Cedar Valley market, said Rathjen.
"We have no plans to divest of those markets," Rathjen said. "The 380 corridor is an attractive market for us. It's one we're committed to."
The bank has one branch each in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Two years ago, Liberty sold its branches in Grundy Center and Eldora to Green Belt Bank & Trust.
Liberty is cutting elsewhere to meet the demands of regulators.
Regulators informed Liberty on July 14, 2011, that the company needed to raise its core capital ratio. The bank suffered loan losses in Florida during the recession.
The bank is selling four locations in northwest Iowa to Northwest Bank. Last week, Liberty also announced an agreement to sell branches in Garner and Klemme to Ames National Corp.
On Tuesday, Rathjen said Liberty also is selling its Granger branch to Earlham Savings Bank of West Des Moines. The bank also has closed a branch in Iowa City.
Tuesday Ackley State Bank, part of Grundy Center-based GNB Bancorporation, announced it has entered into an agreement to buy Liberty's Iowa Falls branch.
