#AFWL2017: Africa Fashion Week London 2017 Designers Shine at Africa Utopia – BellaNaija

Posted: July 28, 2017 at 7:39 pm

Africa Utopia is an annual festival celebrating the arts and culture of one of the worlds most dynamic and fast-changing continents. Championed by Senegalese singer and human rights advocate Baaba Maal, the annual program features a range of talks, workshops, music, performances, fashion, and food.

8 AFWL Designers (past and present) showcased 9 capsule collections on a specially made catwalk on Southbanks outside terrace for this years Africa Utopia.

The designers were:

Slow-Case by Odette Steele. Her remit was to highlight the throwaway culture of the Western world and how many of these unwanted fashions end up in Africa Markets. Odette showed her textile training to up cycle and redecorate the plain western textiles into something desirable and luxurious.

A past AFWL designer, Bola Obileye of Tote Collections showed us her love of vintage 1950s glamour with petticoat-ed rockabilly dresses in African print (of course!), mixed with Roy Lichtenstein pop art inspired pencil skirts and clutch bags. Totally inspiring!

New-comer and freshly graduated Abisola Akanni showed us a collection of menswear that was full of fun, colour, drama. Our male models absolutely loved this collection and didnt want to take it off! Abisola is so unassuming, it makes us marvel at her imagination and we cant wait to see what she shows on the AFWL catwalk and in the future.

AFWL Head Stylist couldnt help but bring two collections to the catwalk. Womenswear full of slinky glamor and shine; and menswear showing tailored dinner jackets paired with Japanese Obi belts and Africanized kimonos.

2 Nigerian menswear designers took the stage, Kola Kuddus and Del Africa, showing a modern twist on traditional Nigerian menswear. Ombr print and out of the ordinary embroidery took wax print to the next level and we loved it. We have to get more of these designs in London.

London based designer Yemzi wowed us with a complete print free collection, dark and moody, but beautifully tailored bang up to date playsuits, shorts, jackets that made out models bounce the runway. She promises a new collection for Africa Fashion Week in August. We cant wait to see it!

AFWL veteran designer Tina Ugo of Didi Creations showed next level caftan designs. Beautiful sexy caftans netted, bold print, lace. All paired with head wraps and slink. Beautiful.

A Mobile Office for Farm-Based Dinners Travels the Country – New York Times

Posted: at 7:39 pm

2. Art and food

My art and the food have equal weight. Good art conditions require the winter weather and waves, to prep the surface. I draw in the sand with a stick and rake, and take aerial photos of the drawings before they disappear. I also do huge designs of vehicle tracks. Ive exhibited at MoMA PS1, and a number of companies have commissioned artwork from me. O.I.T.F. requires the seasonal harvest, and good weather for being outdoors.

3. Feast in the field

One of our May dinners was at Front Porch Farm in Healdsburg, Calif.

A satellite crew of people who travel to dinners under their own power helps us set up, serve and clean up at events. I cook when theres no guest chef.

At dinners I park the bus near the table in a particular way so its not only a mobile office but also part of a composition (or part of the work scene, in an artistic sense).

Rolling along

All seven of us live and work on the bus. I like to travel in the captains seat across from the driver and take in the view when Im not working somewhere on the bus. I rarely drive it, but Im going to this year.

4. Devices welcome

The dinette, our main work area, is often packed with people and productivity. But generally were not all working at the same time, and I work wherever I can find a seat.

Now you see it

The entire office converts to sleeping quarters for eight.

The desks disappear into the beds and come out again in the morning.

Each desk has a cup holder so drinks dont slide, and we put a soft rubber mat under a laptop to keep it secure.

5. Cubbies

Everyone gets a cubby for work items, and a storage area in the back of the bus for personal items.

We have lots of outlets for chargers and charging stations. I went way overboard and had these installed all over, but Im glad I did.

Work habits

Everyone has a water bottle and they tend to be left all over, coloring the interior of the bus. Mine is green and seldom has water in it. The crew tells me to drink some water if I get grumpy.

I make drawings and illustrated stories and give them away to staff, customers, farmers, and chefs. Quick, and here you go.

I always have Sharpies, crayons and cheap blank notebooks around for writing and drawing.

Soothing sounds

My assistant Seth brought a small music box on the bus and eventually gave it to me after I kept asking for it. It plays You Are My Sunshine. The bus driver controls who gets to play what. Like being silly, music is great for keeping spirits up on the long drives.

Bus-less trip

We recently made it to Chile without the bus. I may transport it to other countries on a container ship in the future. My brother, an organic farmer who inspired me, advises on farming in Chilean orchards, so we had to go there. We organized a dinner while there.

6. Reading time

The bus has books like Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia, which examines utopian impulses. Its critical to thoughtfully consider what we do. I also have copies of my cookbook. I doodle on it when someone wants a signed copy.

Restroom niceties

The bathroom, especially the shower area, is tiny. The shower nozzle is like a kitchen faucet nozzle. Im 6-4, so I prefer to shower somewhere else. Sometimes we stay in hotels or a farmer has extra room.

Interview conducted and condensed by Patricia R. Olsen.

Sport: Pacific Oceania ponder changes to Fed and Davis Cup … – Radio New Zealand

Posted: at 7:38 pm

Pacific Oceania believes a lack of time together is hindering hopes of promotion in the Fed and Davis Cup tennis tournaments.

The women finished in a share of fifth place last week in Asia/Oceania Zone Group Two, while the men defeated Turkmenistan to avoid relegation from Group Three.

This is the third year since the Pacific Oceania Fed Cup team was revived and captain Patrice Cotti said they travelled to Tajikistan with high hopes.

"Last year we lost against Philippines and Philippines was promoted so this year we expected to make a good result," he said.

"After our win against Iran we had to win against Hong Kong China to be in the semi finals. We lost 3-0 but it was pretty tough and pretty close because Steffi Carruthers lost the third game against the number two of Hong Kong China 7-5 6-3 so it was really close.

"And Abigail Tere-Apisah in the game against the number one of Hong Kong China she lost 6-4 6-4 but she was up 4-3 in each set and each game was pretty tough.

"I was disappointed because I think it was possible for us to win but Hong Kong China was strong and after that they won their semi final and they were promoted."

The Pacific Oceania Fed Cup team in Tajikistan. Photo: Supplied

Pacific Oceania's four Fed Cup players all live in different countries, and Patrice Cotti, who is based in Tahiti, said one of the biggest challenges facing them is distance.

"It's very difficult for Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams because we only meet one time during the year because we don't have any time to have a good preparation so we need each player of each team...to improve by themselves (throughout the year)," he said.

"So it's difficult but I think in the future if we have a player like Colin Sinclair in the Davis Cup and Carol Lee (in Fed Cup), because she's really young and really talented, we can have promotion for Davis Cup and for Fed Cup no problem and maybe more players - maybe we don't know them very well but we have to discover them."

Patrice Cotti wants to stay on for at least once more Fed Cup campaign and said they might need to explore.

"Maybe we have to meet altogether 15 days before the draw, before the competition, because even if we don't meet together along the year maybe if we stay maybe one month before at the competition (venue) maybe it will be better because we have to work on the doubles, we have to work on everything," he said.

"Maybe it's some details but after all, at the end, the details make the difference."

Jayde Mitchell to fight Ainiwaer Yilixati for WBA Oceania title on Aug 4 – WBN – World Boxing News

Posted: at 7:38 pm

Victorian super middleweight boxer, Jayde Mitchell (J-Mitch), currently ranked 15th by the WBA and 17th by the WBC, will go head-to-head with the super middleweight China champion, Ainiwaer Yilixati (Yilixati), to defend his WBC-OPBF title and to earn the full WBA Oceania title.

Article continues below

The 2016 Australian fighter of the year has a hefty stash of titles under his belt claiming the current champion for the WBC-OPBF, International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific, and World Boxing Association-Pan Asian Boxing Association (WBA-PABA) and interim champion WBA Oceania super middleweight division titles.

J-Mitch has recorded 15 professional fights with 14 wins and only a single loss. Out of those wins J-Mitch has landed 8 knock outs. Yilixati has also scored 8 knock out wins from his 10 recorded fights undefeated, but it is the additional experience in the professional ring that J-Mitch sees will give him the winning edge on 4 August.

In anticipation of the fight on Friday, 4 August, J-Mitch said:

Yilixati is a strong competitor and the fact that he is a top Chinese prospect to become world champion is simply further motivation for me to fight for these titles and once again defeat another undefeated contender.

This fight will be a huge test for both of us as we both are on the way to the top!

He is my highest rated contender but I can defend both titles and I'm prepared for a hard fight. Yilixiati will bring the best out of me!

With Australias traditionally nation-proud sports like cricket and tennis having been shrouded in persistent controversy of late and with the recent stellar win by Australias World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, Jeff Horn; boxing is becoming Australias new national sporting pride as the athletes demonstrate both the prowess and humility that we are proud to share on an international stage.

J-Mitch is an example of hard work, dedication and determination having had a successful amateur boxing career while running and working in his concrete business on the Mornington Peninsula. With the support of his wife, Tegan, and his trainer and father, Len Mitchell, J-Mitch transitioned to full-time professional boxing.

It is the strong values of family and persistence that J-Mitch believes will see him continue beyond this fight and onto a shot at the world title:

Family is such a massive part of my success in the ring with my Dads training and him having been a professional boxer himself.

It also means the world to me to have the support of my wife, Tegan, who has backed my every step from amateur and tradie to full time professional fighter. She is just amazing.

This fight means I get a chance to fight Akkaway at the Hisense Arena in September and the winner will then get a shot at the German WBA world champion, Tyrone Zouge. With my family behind me Im confident that that shot will be mine.

Jayde Mitchell (J-Mitch) is a super middleweight professional boxer with the outstanding record of 14 wins from 15 professional bouts. With eight knock outs and with only one loss, the Australian is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

31 year old J-Mitch was named the 2016 Australian fighter of the year and is 2016 Ranked 15th in the world by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and 17th in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

J-Mitch has racked up an impressive list of world class wins currently claiming the title of super middleweight International Boxing Organization (IBO) Asia Pacific Champion, World Boxing Association-Pan Asian Boxing Association (WBA-PABA) Champion, World Boxing Council-Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (WBC-OPBF) Champion and, interim WBA Oceania Champion.

With an impressive amateur middleweight and light heavyweight career (48 wins-6 losses), J-Mitchs professional debut was in August 2014. A concreter in his previous life, J-Mitch made the decision to turn his boxing into a full-time profession at the end of 2015 and he has won every bout and title since.

J-Mitch has the support of his family, with his wife, Tegan, being a constant source of encouragement; and his dad, Len Mitchell, being his trainer and also having been a professional boxer. With both of his grandfathers also having been fighters, it is clear that boxing is in J-Mitch's blood.

WENY News – 8 Of the best resorts in the Seychelles – WENY-TV

Posted: at 7:37 pm

By Travis Levius CNN

(CNN) -- The Maldives isn't the only spot for Indian Ocean indulgence.

The Seychelles -- a string of 115 tropical islands 1,000 miles east of Tanzania -- boasts some of the world's best beaches with a renowned collection of luxurious getaways.

It's long been a sun-drenched playground for the rich and famous, so there's no shortage of villa resorts with 24-hour butlers, private swimming holes, gourmet cuisine and spa treatments alongside arrestingly beautiful beaches.

From family-friendly resorts to hyperexclusive private islands, here's a guide to eight of the Seychelles' greatest escapes:

1. MAIA Luxury Resort & Spa

This private peninsula resort, based on the secluded and picturesque Anse Louis, is as exclusive as it gets on the mainland of Mah.

Only guests of the all-inclusive 30-villa retreat have access to its lush grounds, which includes a beach-level restaurant, swimming pool and bar as well as a stunning open-air Balinese spa.

Most clientele spend most of their stay in spacious thatched beach or hillside villas -- each with its own ocean-facing infinity pool, outdoor sunken tub and 24-hour butler/in-room dining service -- to make most use of MAIA's space for ultimate privacy and comfort.

MAIA Luxury Resort & Spa, 5th June Ave, Anse Boileau, Seychelles; +248 4 390 000

2. North Island

For ultra-luxury there's North Island, the Seychelles' preeminent private island where one night's stay can set you back more than $5,000.

The 11-villa butler-serviced island has hosted many an A-lister -- including the Clooneys, the Beckhams and most famously the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge -- plus other wealthy travelers who seek complete privacy in a "barefoot luxury" setting.

North Island features an intimate cliffside spa, three unspoilt beaches and a chef who cooks whatever you wish (In the mood for lobster? Octopus curry for lunch? No problem). Beyond the exclusive beaches and massive beachfront villas, the eco-conscious resort runs a lauded nature conservancy program, which has led Hawksbill and green turtles to nest once again on its pristine shores.

North Island, Seychelles; +248 4293 110

3. Six Senses Zil Pasyon

The Six Senses brand makes its splashy African debut with Zil Pasyon ("Passion Island" in Creole) in 2016, becoming the country's "it" resort of the moment. It's a private island sanctuary of 30 modern villas, each with a generous personal infinity pool and in-villa wine cellar.

"Butlers" are not a thing here; instead, designated Guest Experience Makers cater to guests' needs 24 hours a day. There are six restaurants and bars, including The Chef's Kitchen, an exclusive gourmet treat for up to six guests for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Activities include daily yoga, beachside cinema nights and outdoor spa treatments between two enormous boulders, and should guests have a bit of "private island fever," the more populous La Digue and Praslin islands are just a short boat ride away.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Felicite Island, Seychelles; +248 467 1000

4. Four Seasons Seychelles

The Four Season Seychelles is based along the gorgeous Petite Anse beach in Mah, with 67 well-appointed villas scattered among a large, lush hill.

Many of the stilted villas along the jungle-covered slopes resemble treehouses -- only a lot more palatial -- with personal infinity pools, daybed pavilions, indoor and outdoor showers and ample outdoor space. Serious spa-goers will feel at home here, as quality treatments such as the Hilltop Fusion Massage -- blending Malaysian, Indian and European techniques -- are carried out in private pavilions among the resort's highest altitudes.

The resort's westward profile makes for brilliant sunset views, best enjoyed either on a villa's ocean-facing deck lounger or on the spa's breathtakingly placed rooftop, overlooking all of Petite Anse and onto the horizon.

Four Seasons Seychelles, Petite Anse, Mahe Island, Seychelles; +248 4 393 000

5. Constance Lemuria

Golf, gastronomy and gorgeous beaches define Constance Lemuria, a sprawled resort on Praslin's northwest tip.

It boasts the Seychelles' sole 18-hole championship-ready golf course, where you can channel your Tiger Woods in exotic environs; the famed 13th hole, located on a steep hill, offer splendid views of the jungle and Indian Ocean.

The newly refurbished resort sports over 100 suites and villas along Grande Anse Kerlan. Though this beach and Petite Anse Kerlan hug the resort's main area, it's worth the shuttle ride or 15-minute hike to visit Anse Georgette, one of the world's highest-rated beaches.

Dining options include modern international restaurant Diva, sleek buffet restaurant The Legend (with premium themed dinners), and The Nest's deck "on the rocks": a coveted, private dining space for two amongst boulders and stellar beach views.

Constance Lemuria, Anse Kerlan, Praslin, Seychelles; +248 4 281 281

6. Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie

Family-owned Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie is known as laid-back La Digue's swishest resort. The Asian-inspired getaway has 63 villas, including the recent introduction of eight Garden Suite Residences fitted in earthy elements such as stone and wood.

Its convenient location next to the La Passe village makes for a brief stroll to Anse Svre Beach or a brisk journey via bicycle -- complimentary for each guest -- to the world-famous Anse Source d'Argent.

There's a spa, two restaurants, a terrace-based bar and a spa, but The Pool Bar is the place to be, with its infinity edge leading towards breathtaking views of Praslin's peaks.

Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie, Anse Svre, La Digue, Seychelles; +248 4 299 999

7. Raffles Seychelles

Raffles Seychelles, based in the north along Anse Takamaka, is located minutes from Anse Lazio, one of the best beaches on Earth.

The resort sports 86 villas, each with a private plunge pool and an outdoor pavilion/dining area, and 24-hour butler service is available for the higher-end one- and two-bedroom villas.

All villas come equipped with easels and sketching paper, allowing guests to express their inner Monet or van Gogh with endless inspiration from the beach and ocean views.

Raffles Spa, purported to be the largest spa in the Seychelles, is a true standout which includes 12 treatment pavilions, a sauna and steam pool, a fitness studio and yoga and meditation classes along the beach.

Raffles Seychelles, Anse Takamaka, Baie Sainte Anne, Seychelles; +248 4 296 000

8. Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa

Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa isn't based on a private island, but it might as well be. There are only 200 inhabitants on the island on which it is based, Silhouette, which happens to be the Seychelles' third largest.

Villa options in this tropical getaway accommodate a wider scope of budgets than most others, ranging from the affordable King Garden Villas to the nearly 12,000 square feet Silhouette Estate, said to have the largest private pool in the Seychelles.

It remains a popular choice for families with a state-of-the-art Kids' Club and babysitting services, and it also offers plenty for the active traveler, including a PADI diving center and varied guided hike excursions around the island's lush, virgin rainforests.

Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa, La Passe, Silhouette Island, Seychelles; +248 4 293 949

Unique view of Seychelles underwater world – eTurboNews

Posted: at 7:37 pm

Seychelles as a destination has much to offer visitors thanks to its natural environment, turquoise-colored waters and pristine beaches. For those interested in the marine life, the Indian Ocean archipelago can also be described as a storehouse for marine biodiversity.

While taking a plunge into the deep ocean is the way to way for a close encounter with amazing sea creatures; a snorkeling or diving expedition may not be everyones cup of tea.

In the quest to provide other options to those unable or unwilling to get their feet wet, local Destination Management Company, Creole Travel Services (CTS) has made a new addition to its fleet of vessels.

A new glass-bottom boat baptized Zephir is what CTS is proposing to visitors and locals alike, wishing to get up-close with the coral reefs that provide homes to brightly-colored fish, among other marine species.

Zephir a LOOKER440 GB forms part of the LOOKER series, a new & unique set of glass bottom boats designed and built by Paritetboat a Russian boat-building company.

According to the Paritetboat website, the LOOKER series boast unique ultra-durable bottom window shaped as an optically regular spheroid. They allow passengers to sit in comfort while they are taken on a tour of the Ocean depths.

Zephir started its operations on July 14 and the Creole Travel Services is promoting excursions to the marine parks and private charters, to both locals and tourists. In an effort to promote learning, especially among the children, the crew have devised boards encouraging guests to identify several types of fish while out on the excursions.

CTSs Deputy General Manager Eric Renard said: The product is ideal for family with kids as its safe and a unique way of discovery Seychelles marine life.

Commenting on the added value to the Seychelles tourism products, Mr. Renard noted that Zephir, which can carry up to 30 persons, is a product that can cater for all markets, while highlighting that it is expected to be well received especially among the Asian and Middle Eastern visitors. Currently, its a hit among European tourists who account for the majority of the bookings.

Mr. Renard said the price range for visitors can be between 45 to 65 while special rates apply for residents.

Seychelles is among the first countries to test drive the new LOOKER glass-bottom boat alongside others like Greece, Canary Islands, Caribbean, Maldives, Fiji, Palau among others.

Aside of Zephir, Creole Travel Services has also brought in a new Catamaran baptized Odezir earlier this year, which offers the Starfish Excursion in the Ste-Anne Marine park with visits to Moyenne Island.

Additionally, the catamaran offers the Surf n Turf Excursion, which includes a trail walk to the famous Anse-Major beach And catamaran excursions along the scenic Baie-Ternay and Anse-du-Riz. Both activities allow for swimming and snorkeling in the marine parks.
