What would we do without wishful thinking?

Not much apparently. According to some of the most recent science on the way our brains work, the Zen Buddhists and psychoanalysts are up against it. No matter how much we try to focus on the present, well be pulled away by the Utopia of the next moment.

As a New York Times piece on some of the most recent science of the brain explained:

[I]t is increasingly clear that the mind is mainly drawn to the future, not driven by the past. Behavior, memory and perception cant be understood without appreciating the central role of prospection. We learn not by storing static records but by continually retouching memories and imagining future possibilities. Our brain sees the world not by processing every pixel in a scene but by focusing on the unexpected.

Our emotions are less reactions to the present than guides to future behavior. Therapists are exploring new ways to treat depression now that they see it as primarily not because of past traumas and present stresses but because of skewed visions of what lies ahead.

Thus we are all writers of our own fictions, not searching for truth in the past or peace in the present but constantly striving to write our future selves. Some people might see it as creative recombination but another way of thinking about it is that we are addicted to retelling our stories in order to suit the next version of ourselves.

Humans are, according to this scientific narrative, Homo Prospectus. We arent just constantly telling and retelling our futures, but sharing jointly constructed futures with each other. As the Times piece notes, We make sacrifices today to earn rewards tomorrow, whether in this life or in the afterlife promised by so many religions.

So, it appears that we are, depending on how one looks at it all, artists painting the canvass of our imagined future. Or perhaps, taking a darker view, we are collectively subject to the worst sorts of self-delusion, constantly lying to ourselves about our past and present to create a more attractive future.

Then again, maybe we are all Utopians banking on the next moment, fueled by what Ernst Bloch called anticipatory consciousness, dreaming of the improved self that could be part of the better collective future.

One could conceive of this kind of research as an excuse to surrender to a mechanistic view of human consciousness, devoid of any mystery or larger agency. Surely, we should be cautious before we reduce ourselves to a series of measurable processes but so much of the demystifying science of the last century has pulled us in that direction.

Still, with that caution in mind, this science might also be seen as evidence that we are built to imagine the future, to make our own myths, to dream until we can dream no more.

In any event, it does make you think about the stories we tell ourselves to make live worth living, to work ourselves out of some of lifes darker corners. Whether we see it as troubling or charming, its clear that the band Wilco was on to something when they wistfully sang about the beautiful folly of wishful thinking.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017: Oceania big guns New Zealand hope to finally leave mark on world stage – Firstpost

Posted: at 12:40 pm

In the wondrous history of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), where tales of victories with double-figure margins abound, New Zealand has been a constant at the top. In a confederation filled with underdogs, New Zealand have cemented their status as the only powerhouse ever since Australia left the OFC to join the more competitive Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

So, it came as no surprise when New Zealand sealed qualification to the 2017 U-17 World Cup by thrashing fellow qualifiers New Caledonia 7-0 in the final of the OFC U-17 Championship, their sixth successive title in the age group.

The matches before the final had seen New Zealand eviscerate Samoa 11-0 and thump Fiji 5-0. New Zealand were so dominant in the competition that they swept all the awards on offer too forward Charles Spragg got the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball, while goalkeeper Zac Jones claimed the Golden Gloves Award. For good measure, New Zealand even snatched the Fair Play Award.

Here's how New Zealand thumped fellow qualifiers New Caledonia 7-0 in the final:

New Zealand's domination of the confederation is hardly a surprise. While other teams like New Caledonia and Samoa have amateurs or semi-professionals playing even for the national men's team, all of the New Zealand's U-17 players play for the youth teams of professional clubs like Wellington Phoenix, who are based in New Zealand, but compete in the Australia's A-League, or teams like Auckland City, which compete in the New Zealand Football Championship.

As a result, their players get a structured football training from a younger age than their Oceanic counterparts.

Take Golden Boot winner Spragg for instance. At the age of four, he joined Auckland's Papakura City Football Club, where he would go on to spend a majority of his childhood along with another New Zealand U-17 player Max Mata. He soon moved to Waitakere United Football Club and travelled to England to compete in the Nike Cup, where they faced off against the creme de la creme of club football like Chelsea and AS Roma.

However, the young Turks will be well advised to not get carried away by the margin of wins in the OFC U-17 Championship.

If history has any lessons for this young team, it is that their dominance in OFC competitions will matter for zilch at the world stage. Only last month, the New Zealand U-20 team was shoved aside 6-0 by theUSA in the Round of 16 stage at the U-20 World Cup.

Understandably then, in seven previous appearances in the U-17 World Cup, the New Zealanders have made it to the Last-16 stage on three occasions, but have never progressed further.

The U-17 event in India then will be New Zealand's opportunity to show that they're not just heavyweights in their own backyard.

"The World Cup is a great opportunity for young New Zealand players. You know we don't get to experience world class football in terms of opposition very often. It's also the first time our young players will get the opportunity to represent the country on the world stage. I know we have got a really top group of young men, so I'm looking forward to getting them there and seeing what they can do," coach Danny Hay told Firstpost after the U-17 World Cup draw in Mumbai after his side had drawnMali, Paraguay and Turkey.

"It's tough, I'm not going to lie. You only need to look at European, African and South American qualifying to recognise that we have drawn three very big teams. Mali didn't lose at all. Paraguay played 12 games in South America and only lost once. And I think Turkey only lost to England and Spain, the top two sides in Europe. That pretty much says it all. It's going to be difficult, but a good challenge," Hay added.

At the 2015 World Cuptoo, New Zealand had been drawn in the same group as Paraguay. The Oceania side beat the South Americans 2-1 to make it to the last-16 stage where they eventually lost to Brazil. However, Hay believes that the South American outfit will be baying for blood this time around."I spoke to their coach during the World Cup draw. They're definitely out for some revenge. And they won't allow that (losing to New Zealand) to happen again. They're an absolutely quality side," he added.

While Hay was handed the reigns of the team mid-way through the two-year World Cup campaign in 2015, this time around the 42-year-old has been around for the whole cycle. "We've had the full squad for a lot more time now. So we know a lot more about the players now in terms of style of playing and philosophy. New Zealand have got to do things pretty smartly because in terms of financial resources we are not even in the same realm of some of the other countries. We have to try and make the most of what we have," saidHay, whorepresented the national team for many years and was also the captain for a while.

His side's attacking intent was beyond doubt at the Oceania tournament, but bigger challenges await.

Oceanian athletes rose to the occasion on the whole on night 2 of the 2017 FINA World Championships. Although Australian breaststrokersTaylor McKeown andJess Hansen missed out on a final berth in the womens 100m distance, 2016 OlympianEmma McKeon rocketed to a podium finish by winning silver in the 100m fly in Commonwealth Record-setting time.

Mitch Larkin,Emily Seebohmand Holly Barrattallmade it through to the finals of the mens and womens 100m backstroke, while New ZealandsCorey Main also sneaked into the 8th spot in the mens 100m backstroke race tomorrow night.

Olympic gold medalistMack Horton was back in the water after his 400m freestyle silver medal performance last night, however, the 21-year-old didnt fare as well this time, finishing 11th and out of the hotly-contested mens 200m freestyle final. Marking the first time Horton is tackling this distance individually at an international championships meet, he clocked a new personal best time of 1:46.81 to validate the decision to tack this on to his freestyle portfolio.

Ive never really raced that event internationally, so that is a massive learning experience. I definitely want to swim more 200s at this level, Horton said post-race. Hortons 400m free nemesis, Sun Yang, advanced to the 200m final.

Additional soundbite:

McKeon now accounts for 2 of the 3 silver medals for the nation of Australia with her individual 100m fly and 4x100m freestyle relay. Hortons 400m free silver accounts for the 3rd medal.

World Travel Awards 2017 winners honored by the Seychelles Tourism Board and Ministry – eTurboNews

Posted: at 12:40 pm

Winning accolades across various categories at the World Travel Awards 2017, demonstrates that Seychelles, in spite of being small in size, remains relevant as a tourist destination.

The Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Mrs. Sherin Francis said this on Wednesday last week, while addressing representatives of the award-winning businesses.

STB and the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine joined together to honour the national airline, port authority and hotels, who were voted the Indian Ocean best and the best in Seychelles, in their respective categories at this years World Travel Awards. This was also an opportunity for the award winners to be presented to the local media.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Francis said: For the people who did the voting; in spite of being small in size, those people still found us [STB, Air Seychelles, Port Authority and hotels] to be relevant.

The World Travel Awards 2017 were announced in a ceremony held in the Maldives earlier this month, in the presence of tourism and hospitality leaders from the region and international media.

For the third consecutive year, the Seychelles Tourism Board took home the award for the Indian Oceans Leading Tourist Board, while Seychelles was voted the Indian Oceans Leading Cruise Destination for the fourth consecutive year.

In the airline category, the travel awards crowned Air Seychelles as the Indian Oceans Leading Airline for the third consecutive year and also the regions best for Business Class and Cabin Crew service both for the fourth consecutive year. And for the first time, Air Seychelles was named the Indian Oceans Leading Airline Brand.

Port Victoria was voted the Indian Oceans Leading Cruise Port for the fifth consecutive year. Two hotels Constance Ephelia and Raffles Praslin Seychelles were voted the Indian Oceans Leading Green Resort and Leading Villa Resort, respectively.

Mrs Francis noted that what sets Seychelles apart from its Indian Ocean neighbours is the people working in the tourism industry, who are passionately working to sell the destination as a product which they firmly believe in.

Commenting on STBs achievement as the Leading Tourist Board, Mrs Francis emphasized on the hard work and devotion of the organisation overseas and local staff who strive to maintain good relationships with their key partners.

The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to recognize the very best travel organizations in the world, through a global vote including by travel and tourism professionals.

Awards are presented for excellence in providing services in different categories of the worlds travel and tourism industry. This includes air services, car rental services, spas, travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and resorts, among others.

Air Seychelles bagged four out of five accolades in the airline category. The airlines Chief Executive Mr. Roy Kinnear said winning the Indian Oceans Leading Airline Brand for the first time is one accolade that should not go unrecognized.

It is the first time it had been awarded in the airline category. The word brand is very very important and for Air Seychelles against many competitors in the region and also in a wider spread worldwide geographic form to win the leading airline brand says something about the airline name, it says something about the word Seychelles, it says something about the reputation of the airline, and the awareness of it. And we really should not underestimate the value of being brand recognised, said Kinnear.

In the hotels category, Raffles Praslin Seychelles featuring 86 villa, emerged as the Indian Oceans Leading Villa Resort, for the third consecutive year. The General Manager of the hotel, Mr Joerg Roterberg said with the discerning traveller having a choice nowadays it is important to take note of the competition, which hotels in Seychelles are up against in the Indian Ocean region.

We are comparing ourselves with Mauritius, the Maldives, a lot of high profile luxury destinations. So it makes us especially proud to bring this award to the Seychelles and to our little rock called Praslin, said Roterberg.

For Constance Ephelia, winning the accolade for the Indian Ocean Leading Green Resort ties in well with the United Nations declaration of 2017 as theInternational Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This is also the second consecutive year that Constance Ephelia was presented with the same award.

The General Manager of the hotel, Mr. Kai Hoffmeister said its the small gestures they do, including recycling, cleaning up, reducing the use of plastic and educating the staff that have not gone unnoticed.

I think all of us can be more green. Everyone that comes to the Seychelles as a tourist, and even we realize how lush this country is. So the contribution to the environment is definitely at the heart of our prioritiesWe are also green certified, which is quite a lengthy processbut we do believe its something worth investing in. The environment and surroundings where we finds ourselves in are uniqueand we need to do all we can to protect it, said Hoffmeister.

The clear turquoise Ocean of the Seychelles islands which offer great island hopping experience are attributes that attract cruise visitors to the archipelago. The Seychelles Ports Authority is another organisation that has been recognised for the services rendered to the cruise ships that call to the island nations shores.

The Port Authoritys Deputy CEO, Herbert Houareau said: Our ports remains open 24 hours a daywe will work harder to ensure safety and further improvement to the port functions. It is a collective work encompassing everyone from all sectors involved in the tourism industry.

Aside of businesses coming out on top in their respective categories for the Indian Ocean awards, other Seychelles hotels and one car hire business were also voted the best in their respective categories in Seychelles and they were also honoured at last weeks event.

They are:

Seychelles’ contestant wins Photogenic Model title at Top Model of … – eTurboNews

Posted: at 12:40 pm

Seychellois Naomy King won the title of the most photogenic model at the Top Model of the World 2017 competition, held in El Gouna, Egypt.

The pageants grand finale was held on Friday 14th July.

King who also made it to the top 6, was ranked fourth at the end of the competition.

I feel very proud as I was not expecting to be among the top 6 out of 40 contestants, she said.

The 17-year-old model was chosen to represent Seychelles at this years Top Model of the World, after she had to renounce her participation in the Miss Intercontinental competition last year, due to school commitments.

Her selection was done by a representative of the international event in Seychelles, Joelle Fabre, who is also the director of the Coral Models Seychelles agency.

Fabre who has been working to groom Naomy into a confident model, was also nominated as the chief chaperone for all contestants at the Top Model of the World 2017.

She said that Naomy who stands at 1.75metres did a great job on the catwalk.

In spite of her timidity she was able to use her perfect height and photogenic face to her advantage, said Fabre.

The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) was among the sponsors of Naomys trip to the 24th edition of the Top Model of the World alongside other local and international sponsors.

The Chief Executive of the STB, Mrs. Sherin Francis said: We are proud of Naomys achievement, her win is also a win for Seychelles. I would like to congratulate her and her mentor for this.

Ukraines Julia Gershun, 20, was crowned Top Model of the World 2017, ahead of the contestants from San Andres and Mexico.

The Top Model of the World, a competition searching for the ultimate model, started in the U.S. city of Miami and is organized by the World Beauty Organization every year. The pageant attracts many international models seeking to be recruited for photo shooting, movies and modelling contracts.

This was Seychelles third participation in the Top Model of the World competition. In 2009, Nathalie Domingue, represented the island nation, winning the best catwalk award, while Mariette Dine showcased the natural Creole beauty of Seychellois women at last years edition.

On the beginning of the summer holiday season, Xel-H nature park inaugurated a new attraction within its sustainable tourism recreation offer. The Scenic Lighthouse will offer the most spectacular views of the Riviera Maya, in a completely natural environment.

The creator of this new icon of the Mexican Caribbean is the architect Miguel Quintana Pali, who for almost 30 years has developed unique tourism concepts taking advantage of the geological and hydrological wealth of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The amazing creativity of Quintana Pali is part of the successful parks Xcaret, Xel-H, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xoximilco and Xenotes Tours, which together receive more than 3 million tourists each year. With Xenses, the most recent of his creations, Miguel Quintana broke paradigms and created a park focused on playing with the minds and senses of its visitors.

Now at Xel-H, the Scenic Lighthouse is an accomplishment that emulates a traditional lighthouse and will fulfill the function of being a reference for maritime navigation. But conceptually it will go much further, since it will allow visitors of Xel-H to ascend a platform located 40 meters high to appreciate an incomparable view of the natural wonder of the area.

The lighthouse has an incredible view of the magnificent Xel-H cove, a body of water of more than 34 acres that has a mouth of 70 meters facing the Caribbean Sea. This is a very special place because it is fed by the fresh water that comes from underground rivers on the one hand, and on the other hand, by the warm salt water of the sea.

In addition, the 360-degree view from the heights will allow visitors to appreciate more than 148 acres of jungle, and of course the breathtaking blue ocean. "Sometimes you dont need to look up to find heaven," says Quintana Pali about the beauty of the place.

But that's not all. The Scenic Lighthouse is designed to offer unforgettable experiences to its visitors, as descending from the heights will be the most fun. Emulating the traditional painting of lighthouses, in the shape of a two-color stick candy, the Xel-H lighthouse will have four descending channels, slides, so that tourists can feel the adrenaline being released, at high speed, to eventually land in a refreshing pool.

Although the investment in this new attraction exceeds 43 million pesos, for Quintana Pali the important thing is to have resolved, with great creativity, how to offer a new appeal to Xel-H, without losing the essence that has characterized it in the last 23 years: to be a natural wonder and the best place to practice snorkeling, with services and food of the highest quality.
