With only a doubles and singles match to go to decide the state title, Ascension Episcopal freshman Alyse Cormier stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park for the Lady Blue Gators. <\/p>\n
Well not really, this is tennis after all. <\/p>\n
But facing tremendous pressure, Cormier closedher undefeated season in spectacular fashion, winning the singles title and earning the Lady Blue Gators their second-straight team state championship in the process. <\/p>\n
\"She clinched the state title for us,\" said Ascension Episcopal coach Buck Bobo. \"She's only in ninth grade and she had to come up clutch for us and she did.\" <\/p>\n
Not many athletes can step up in a similar pressure-packed situation and perform, much less a ninth grader. <\/p>\n
Bobo said Cormier's personality helped her come through in the end. <\/p>\n
\"She's pretty strong mentally and off the court she is a great kid. Very bubbly, very easy to get along with, but she really hates to lose,\" Bobo said. \"It got a little tight in the middle, but she bared down and pulled through and won the second set. With 50-60 people watching you and a state championship on the line it was good for her to come through in the clutch.\" <\/p>\n
Cormier wasn't the only champion from Ascension Episcopal, former High Achiever Jacob Abdella won the doubles state title with his partner Mustafa Alam. <\/p>\n
