I am not persuaded, however, by Henninger's assessment of what the electorate wants. He says<\/p><blockquote><p>More than anything, the American voter is desperate for political leadership.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>This may be part of the story, but here's a different interpretation: a signficant fraction of the electorate is neither liberal nor conservative but libertarian.<\/p><p>Not over the top, wingnut libertarian like me, but moderate, restrained libertarian: fiscally conservative and socially tolerant.<\/p><p>I doubt this augurs a flood of officially libertarian candidates.
