SAN ANTONIO -- Downtown could look a little different in a few years. City council unanimously approved funding Thursday for a new medical school to be located at the heart of the city. <\/p>\n
The new Incarnate Word medical school will be built where Fox Technical High School is currently located, in the 600 block of N. Main Avenue. Fox Tech is in the San Antonio Independent School District. <\/p>\n
Despite facing a $30 million deficit for the next fiscal year, city council approved $7.7 million to be allocated to build the new medical school. <\/p>\n
The school is expected to bring around 50 full-time jobs and 500 medical students to the downtown area. <\/p>\n
The University of Incarnate Word still needs funds from Bexar County -- around $11 million -- for a parking garage. The county has not said yes or no to the request. <\/p>\n
In addition, UIW still needs to raise another $50 million on its own, mostly from donations. <\/p>\n
