Quincy College has been awarded a $2.9 million federal grant to train students in the biotechnology industry. <\/p>\n
U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis announced Wednesday $500 million in grants to 54 community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of training programs. <\/p>\n
Quincy College received $2,995,441 for its biotechnology and compliance program. <\/p>\n
The school will offer an associate of science program in biotechnology and compliance and a one-year certification program in biotechnology and compliance. <\/p>\n
According to the colleges federal application, the program will integrate virtual laboratories into an evidence-based, blended-learning approach. <\/p>\n
It will combine training on traditional manufacturing technology with emerging, in-demand technology. <\/p>\n
Program partners from the biotechnology industry will provide paid internships to program students in the field. <\/p>\n
The resulting program credentials will meet the Boston areas growing demand for specialized middle-skills technicians, as well as the areas need for jobs for displaced workers, the application reads. <\/p>\n
The funding stems from the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which was authorized in 2009. <\/p>\n
The 2010 Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act included $2 billion over four years to fund the program. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
