The Freedom Riders Pilgrimage is making stops in the Magnolia State to remind the public about the sacrifices made to achieve voting rights. <\/p>\n
The pilgrimage made a stop at the Medgar Evers Statue in Jackson Tuesday morning. <\/p>\n
The Freedom Riders are visiting cities and sites where voting rights workers were murdered during the 1960s. <\/p>\n
Activistshope this pilgrimage will help peopleunderstand the importance of supporting Section5 of the Voting Rights Act. <\/p>\n
\"Our young people know so little about this history so the right to vote is taken for granted, but as the supreme court considers whether or not to declare section five unconstitutional, which is the heart of the voting rights act, it is critical that our young people and our elders recognize the great sacrifices for the right to vote and remind ourselves and our children that the struggle for the right to vote continue and we will not stop until it is secured,\" activist Faya Toure said. <\/p>\n
Before heading to Alabama, the group will visit Tougaloo and areas in Philadelphia. <\/p>\n
