{"id":70553,"date":"2012-02-28T14:02:19","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T14:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/uncategorized\/why-flatworms-may-hold-the-secret-to-immortality.php"},"modified":"2024-08-17T19:58:01","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T23:58:01","slug":"why-flatworms-may-hold-the-secret-to-immortality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/immortality\/why-flatworms-may-hold-the-secret-to-immortality.php","title":{"rendered":"Why flatworms may hold the secret to immortality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p class=\"first\">    British scientists believe they may have identified how humans    could potentially live forever- and it\u2019s all about flatworms  <\/p>\n<p>    Experts at Nottingham University have been examining how two    species of flatworms are able to regenerate themselves again    and again \u2013 raising hopes that scientists could find ways of    alleviating the effects of ageing in human cells.  <\/p>\n<p>    Flatworms, known as planarian worms, have long fascinated    scientists with their apparently limitless ability to    regenerate.  <\/p>\n<p>During the study 20,000 new and fully-formed flatworms were  created from just one original worm by splitting it into tiny  pieces.  <\/p>\n<p>    The research team studied how the flatworms manage to replace    aged or damaged tissues and cells in a bid to understand what    drives their longevity.  <\/p>\n<p>    Dr Aziz Aboobaker, who led the study, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been    studying two types of planarian worms; those that reproduce    sexually, like us, and those that reproduce asexually, simply    dividing in two.  <\/p>\n<p>    \u201cBoth appear to regenerate indefinitely by growing new muscles,    skin, guts and even entire brains over and over again.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>    &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;    [Related link: The world\u2019s longest living    animals]  <\/p>\n<p>    Key to a flatworm\u2019s immortality lays in its telomeres \u2013 tiny    sections of DNA that cap the ends of chromosomes, protecting    them from damage and the loss of cell functions linked to    ageing.  <\/p>\n<p>    Each time a cell divides the protective telomere \u2018cap\u2019 gets    shorter. When they get too short, the cell loses its ability to    renew and divide. According to the study an immortal animal    would expect cells to be able to maintain telomere length    indefinitely so that they could continue to replicate.
