{"id":6211,"date":"2010-01-22T16:58:11","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T16:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/the-internet-is-now-officially-in-space\/"},"modified":"2010-01-22T16:58:11","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T16:58:11","slug":"the-internet-is-now-officially-in-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/nasa\/the-internet-is-now-officially-in-space.php","title":{"rendered":"The Internet is now (officially) in space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/4c9ff_earth.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1475\" src=\"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/4c9ff_earth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"189\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/a>Here on Earth, we&rsquo;ve grown used to having the Internet available almost anytime we want it.&nbsp; As of December 2009, <a href=\"\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2010\/Internet-broadband-and-cell-phone-statistics.aspx\">74%<\/a> of American adults use the internet.&nbsp; <a href=\"\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2010\/Internet-broadband-and-cell-phone-statistics.aspx\">60%<\/a> of American adults use broadband connections at home.&nbsp; <a href=\"\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2010\/Internet-broadband-and-cell-phone-statistics.aspx\">55%<\/a> of American adults connect wirelessly through laptops or handheld devices like smartphones.<\/p><p><strong>So, what about Astronauts in space?&nbsp; Do they have internet?<\/strong><\/p><p><span><\/span><\/p><p>When I posted &ldquo;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opennasa.com\/2009\/05\/12\/the-first-human-tweet-from-space\/\">The First *Human* Tweet from Space<\/a><\/em>&rdquo; back in May 2009, some rightly pointed out that this <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/05\/22\/revealed-astro-mike-was-not-updating-twitter-from-space-nor-was-he-doing-it-in-real-time-heck-it-wasnt-even-him\/\">technically<\/a><\/em> wasn&rsquo;t a tweet from space.&nbsp; At that time, @astro_mike wrote an email that was sync&rsquo;d to the ground later in the day (email is sync&rsquo;d twice a day from the space).&nbsp; The email was sent to PAO and a ghost writer copied\/typed the &ldquo;tweet&rdquo; word for word on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Astro_mike\">@astro_mike<\/a>&rsquo;s twitter account.<\/p><p>Although this was a big step for NASA at the time, the agency took an even bigger step forward today when Astronauts on the International Space Station received a special software upgrade that provides personal access to the Internet. Although the internet service is still limited (<em>n<\/em><em>o pictures or big files yet<\/em>), it does allow for real time updating! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/Bios\/htmlbios\/creamer.html\">TJ Creamer<\/a> made the first use of the new system about eight hours ago with an update to his Twitter account (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Astro_TJ\">@Astro_Tj<\/a>), inviting questions from those of us still stuck on Earth:<\/p><p><em><span>&ldquo;Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International&nbsp;Space Station &mdash; the 1st live tweet from Space! <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/b00ab_icon_smile.gif\" alt=\":)\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\">  More soon, send&nbsp;your ?s&rdquo;<\/span><\/em><\/p><p>Here&rsquo;s a little more information from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/home\/hqnews\/2010\/jan\/HQ_M10-011_Hawaii221169.html\">the official NASA press release<\/a>:<\/p><p><em><span>This personal Web access, called the Crew Support LAN, takes advantage&nbsp;of existing communication links to and from the station and gives astronauts the ability to browse and use the Web. The system will&nbsp;provide astronauts with direct private communications to enhance their quality of life during long-duration missions by helping to&nbsp;ease the isolation associated with life in a closed environment. During periods when the station is actively communicating with the&nbsp;ground using high-speed Ku-band communications, the crew will have remote access to the Internet via a ground computer.
