Cleanup teams have been scouring Coromandel beaches to make sure they are free of Rena wreck debris in time for the summer holiday season. <\/p>\n
Teams from the Braemar Howells container recovery company inspected the northern beaches this week on foot and quad bikes looking for plastic beads and minor flotsam, operations manager Mike Richards said. <\/p>\n
\"Braemar is very conscious we're now rapidly heading towards the peak summer holiday season and we want to make sure that beaches, coves and other shoreline areas are as clear as possible.\" <\/p>\n
He said shoreline teams at Sailor's Grave, Tairua and Waihi Beach had picked up large quantities of plastic beads. The Rena was carrying around 17 tonnes of the tiny beads when it crashed into the Astrolabe Reef off Mt Maunganui more than a year ago. <\/p>\n
Mr Richards said he was pleased with reports that the stretch of coast between Main Beach at Mt Maunganui and Papamoa was in a good condition for the arrival of holidaymakers. <\/p>\n
The number of containers recovered from the wreck remains at 1007 of the 1368 on board. <\/p>\n
