On Tuesday, China gave new rights to its maritime patrollers to stop and search incoming vessels in the South China Sea. Disputed territory in the South China Sea is claimed by several nations, but China asserts that it has a sovereign right to patrol these waters. The law gives police in the island province of Hainan the right to \"board, seize, and expel foreign ships illegally entering the province #39;s sea areas.\" The Chinese regime says it #39;s preventing foreign vessels from landing on disputed islands, damaging coastal defense facilities and \"carrying out publicity campaigns that may threaten national security.\" The South China Sea has vast reserves of oil and gas, and contains some of the world #39;s busiest shipping lanes.
