Henry VII, Imperial Competition, Atlantic Exploration
\"Henry VII Imperial Competition: Cod, Christianity, and Late Fifteenth Century Atlantic Exploration.\" This lecture reading illustrates the connection between religious piety, increased in fish-eating habits, commerce, politics along with trade in the North Atlantic. While Christopher Columbus would enjoy fame after his voyage in 1492, English seamen were trading in Iceland (and perhaps beyond) from the port of Bristol in recorded voyages in the 1480s and the Norse from the 900sAD. Northern Europeans, not the Iberians, have a longer history as sea venturers of Atlantic islands such as Iceland, Greenland, and North America. From his own accounts, Columbus admitted Irish seamen had confided in him about islands in the Atlantic. According to his journal, he accompanied them on a trading voyage to Iceland when he was a teen.
