It's only natural that the Italian peninsula would include some of the world's most scenic beaches. From the Italian Riviera to the Amalfi Coast, from the islands of Sicily and Sardinia to the Adriatic Sea, Italy has plenty to offer beach lovers. Italian Riviera Beaches The Italian Riviera extends from the French/Italian border down the coast to the picturesque fishing village of Portofino. Most of the towns along this stretch of coastline have at least one beach, many of which have lyrical names that evoke that singular, Italian charm. Some of the more popular sandy stretches along the Italian Riviera include the beaches at San Remo, Monterosso, and Riomaggiore.

Beaches Along the Amalfi Coast Italy's Amalfi Coast extends along the western coastline from Portofino down to Naples. This area is noted for its dramatic craggy shoreline, steep cliffs, and small hillside towns, as well as being the part-time residence of celebrities like George Clooney. Most of the beaches here are smaller, cove-style, sandy oases. Some of the best of these are Fornillo Beach and Spaggia Grande, both in Positano.

Italy's Island Beaches The islands of Italy, particularly Capri, Sicily, and Sardinia, are home to many of the country's most beautiful beaches. On Capri, you'll find a wide stretch of sand at Bagni di Tiberio on the north side of the island and the popular Marina di Mulo on the southern shore. Sicily's beaches include the trendy Mondello Lido, near Palermo, and Spiaggia Sabbie Nere, a black lava sand beach on the island of Vulcano, just off the northeast shore of Sicily. On Sardinia, the favorites are Lagoon Beach (pictured) and Spiaggia del Principe (the Prince's Beach) on the island's northeast shoreline.

Beaches on Italy's Adriatic Coast Italy's Adriatric Coast, from Venice through Tuscany to the province of Puglia in the tip of Italy's "boot," is home to some of the most famous Italian beaches. Chief among these is the 7-mile Lido beach, just outside of Venice. Other Adriatric Sea beaches include the one at Castiglione della Pescaia in Tuscany and another at the Cape of Santa Maria di Leuca in Puglia.

So make sure to include a trip to the beach on your next trip to Italy. A day in the sun is a great way to unwind after all those tours of churches, museums, and historic sites.

Continued here:

Italy's Many Scenic Beaches

Italy, bounded by water to the west, south, and east, boasts more than 4,700 miles of coastline.
