Now, thankfully, the app has been removed and its online presence deleted, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/vybe-together-tiktok-promote-nye-parties-amid-covid-19-2020-12\">Business Insider <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/vybe-together-tiktok-promote-nye-parties-amid-covid-19-2020-12\">reports<\/a>, eliminating one more way that COVID-19 could have potentially &mdash; and likely did &mdash; spread.<\/p><p>Vybe largely went unnoticed for its months of operation until it was spotted by <em>New York Times<\/em> reporter Taylor Lorenz, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TaylorLorenz\/status\/1343994810714058753?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1343995285869977600%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es2_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Farstechnica.com%2Ftech-policy%2F2020%2F12%2Fprivate-party-app-pulled-from-app-store-by-apple%2F\">who tweeted<\/a> about how the app was promoting New Year&rsquo;s Eve celebrations with footage of maskless revelers.<\/p><blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some terrible people built a whole app for finding and promoting COVID-unsafe large, indoor house parties and they&rsquo;re using TikTok to market it to millions of ppl. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zYhBiFH4vR\">pic.twitter.com\/zYhBiFH4vR<\/a><\/p><p>&mdash; Taylor Lorenz (@TaylorLorenz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TaylorLorenz\/status\/1343994810714058753?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p>But CEO Alexander Dimcevski is defending the app, saying the footage was exaggerated for marketing&rsquo;s sake and that the service only hosted small gatherings.<\/p><p>&ldquo;We do not condone large unsafe parties during a pandemic,&rdquo; Dimcevski told <em>BI<\/em>.<\/p><p>A Vybe spokersperson <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2020\/12\/private-party-app-pulled-from-app-store-by-apple\/\">told <em>Ars Technica<\/em><\/a> that the app draws a distinction between &ldquo;large unsafe parties during a pandemic&rdquo; and &ldquo;small get-togethers,&rdquo; but the fact is that there&rsquo;s not really any such thing as a safe get-together, especially inside an apartment, like Vybe promoted.<\/p><p>With a spike in new cases likely heading our way after Christmas and New Year&rsquo;s gatherings, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/29\/us\/california-hospital-oxygen-covid\/index.html\">already-struggling healthcare system<\/a> will have an even harder time giving every COVID-19 patient the care they need.
