Washington, D.C. The rules governing the appointment of justices to the Supreme Court should be updated to reflect the realities of modern life. The average length of a justices tenure has grown significantly since the establishment of the federal judiciary in the 1700s, giving outsize power to nine individuals in a way never imagined by the framers of the Constitution.<\/p>\n
This longevity has led to fewer vacancies on the court and turned the confirmation process into a political sideshow. This state of affairs in untenable. Policymakers must address these issues and consider legislation creating term limits for justices.<\/p>\n
