{"id":400026,"date":"2020-07-24T13:52:47","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T17:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/fungus-growing-at-chernobyl-could-protect-astronauts-from-cosmic-rays.php"},"modified":"2020-07-24T13:52:47","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T17:52:47","slug":"fungus-growing-at-chernobyl-could-protect-astronauts-from-cosmic-rays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/fungus-growing-at-chernobyl-could-protect-astronauts-from-cosmic-rays.php","title":{"rendered":"Fungus Growing at Chernobyl Could Protect Astronauts From Cosmic Rays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2020\/07\/fungus-chernobyl-protect-astronauts-cosmic-rays-300x158.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"Scientists have a bizarre idea for protecting astronauts from cosmic rays: Shield them with the radiation-absorbing fungus near Chernobyl.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Space Shields<\/h2><p>One of the biggest challenges facing crewed missions to Mars is figuring out how to protect crewmembers from the onslaught of <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/radiation-exposure-mars\">deadly cosmic rays<\/a>.<\/p><p>Now, scientists at a number of universities say there&rsquo;s growing evidence that an unusual solution could be effective: building shields out of a radiation-absorbing fungus that grows near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2249784-mould-from-chernobyl-nuclear-reactor-tested-as-radiation-shield-on-iss\/?utm_campaign=RSS%7CNSNS&amp;utm_source=NSNS&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_content=news\">New Scientist <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2249784-mould-from-chernobyl-nuclear-reactor-tested-as-radiation-shield-on-iss\/?utm_campaign=RSS%7CNSNS&amp;utm_source=NSNS&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_content=news\">reports<\/a> that the fungus was able to block some cosmic rays after a small test on the International Space Station, giving hope for safe space travel in the future.<\/p><h2>Light Armor<\/h2><p>The Johns Hopkins University and Stanford scientists behind the ISS study, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.07.16.205534v1\">shared online last week<\/a>, found that an extremely thin sample of the fungus <em>Cryptococcus neoformans <\/em>was able to block and absorb two percent of the cosmic rays that hit it while it was on the ISS.<\/p><p>That&rsquo;s certainly not enough to protect astronauts, but the sample in question was only two millimeters thick.
