You may remember <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/2010\/10\/28\/the-boiling-erupting-sun\/\">his picture of our star<\/a> that was so cool I chose it as one of my <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/2010\/12\/14\/the-top-14-astronomy-pictures-of-2010\/\">Top 14 Pictures of 2010<\/a>. <\/p><p>He&rsquo;s still snapping away, and on August 17th took <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.avertedimagination.com\/img_pages\/delicato.html\">this lovely picture<\/a> of a prominence erupting from the Sun&rsquo;s surface: <\/p><p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.avertedimagination.com\/img_pages\/delicato.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/a1b6a_alanfriedman_promaug172011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"632\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36840\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/a><\/p><p>[Click to enfilamentate.]<\/p><p>Isn&rsquo;t that gorgeous? A prominence is a towering arc of material lifted off the Sun&rsquo;s surface by intense magnetic fields. To give you an idea of how strong the magnetic forces are, a prominence can have a mass upwards of <em>a hundred billion tons<\/em>, and be cranked up thousands of kilometers off the Sun&rsquo;s surface&hellip; despite the crushing gravity of nearly 30 times that of Earth&rsquo;s!<\/p><p>And some people call the Sun \"average\". Ha!<\/p><p>Alan takes these images with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.avertedimagination.com\/img_pages\/little_big_man.html\">a pretty nice &lsquo;scope<\/a> equipped with a filter that blocks all the light from the Sun except for a narrow slice of color preferentially emitted by warm hydrogen.
