Mann<\/a> is the author of several books, including  <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1400032059\/geneexpressio-20\">1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus<\/a> and  <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0307265722\/geneexpressio-20\">1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created<\/a>. Much of his work has been involved in publicizing the ecological factors which shape the course of human history. You can read a lengthy review of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2011\/08\/1493_uncovering_the_new_world.php\">1493 over at Chad Orzel&rsquo;s<\/a> blog. Needless to say, I highly recommend it (I read it on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B004G606EY\/geneexpressio-20\">Kindle edition<\/a>, and it was interesting to see which passages other people had highlighted).<\/p><p><em>1 &ndash; I notice that there is a second edition of your book, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1400032059\/geneexpressio-20\">1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus<\/a>, out. Are there any major revisions?<\/em><\/p><p>Yes and no. When I went back and looked at the book, its basic thrust still seemed solid (at least to me). Although people had made various critiques of the book, I hadn&rsquo;t seen any that challenged its underlying premises. So in that way the book is little changed.<\/p><p>That doesn&rsquo;t mean that I was wholly satisfied, though. I ended up rewriting or revamping about a fifth of the book.
