The rare event was captured on camera by amateurs and professionals alike.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><p>Comet C\/2020 F3 &mdash; better known as NEOWISE, for the Near Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer telescope that first discovered it &mdash; has came so close to Earth over the weekend&nbsp;that it&rsquo;s visible to the naked eye, blazing brightly over Northern skies. But over the last few months, the comet has become far brighter as it&rsquo;s approached.<\/p><blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">this morning looking north over Lake Superior as the comet skimmed the horizon a little over 1&deg;, the aurora made a brief appearance  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/comet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#comet<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/neowise?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#neowise<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ryKiLsE1SX\">pic.twitter.com\/ryKiLsE1SX<\/a><\/p><p>&mdash; Lake Superior Photo (@LAKSuperiorFoto) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LAKSuperiorFoto\/status\/1282604662466793473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p>On July 3, it was only 27.3 million miles (44 million km) from the Sun. To put that into perspective, the closest flyby of the Sun by an artificial object was NASA&rsquo;s Parker Solar Probe back in January, passing by our star at a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/parkersolarprobe\/2020\/01\/29\/parker-solar-probe-completes-fourth-closest-approach-breaks-new-speed-and-distance-records\/\">mere 18.7 million kilometers<\/a>.<\/p><p>In fact, the solar probe was able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2020\/nasa-s-parker-solar-probe-spies-newly-discovered-comet-neowise\/\">get its own look<\/a> at the comet on July 5, according to NASA.<\/p><p>Astronomers were concerned the comet would not survive such a close encounter, but as evidenced by this weekend&rsquo;s sightings, it seems to be doing fine.<\/p><blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Comet NEOWISE over Stonehenge, UK <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/75SsVvSDF5\">pic.twitter.com\/75SsVvSDF5<\/a><\/p><p>&mdash;
