The vaccine, detailed in a recent study <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/jm200461m\">in the<em> Journal of Medicinal Chemistry<\/em><\/a>, stimulates antibodies that can stop not only heroin but also its derivative <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychoactive_drug\">psychoactive<\/a> compounds from reaching the brain.<\/p><p><strong>How the Heck:<\/strong><\/p><p> Developing a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vaccine\">vaccine<\/a> for heroin addiction has been a goal of research for some time, but a major issue has been that the drug quickly metabolizes into <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monoacetylmorphine\">6-acetylmorphine<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morphine\">morphine<\/a>, and the much less active <a rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"3-Monoacetylmorphine (page does not exist)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=3-Monoacetylmorphine&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">3-monoacetylmorphine<\/a>, so any vaccine must work against all four of the compounds.<br>This research team solved the problem by creating a drug cocktail that slowly degrades in the body, all the while exposing the immune system to the different psychoactive <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolite\">metabolites<\/a> of heroin.
