Pickrell has a provocative post over at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.genomesunzipped.org\/2011\/07\/why-publish-science-in-peer-reviewed-journals.php\">Genomes Unzipped<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.genomesunzipped.org\/2011\/07\/why-publish-science-in-peer-reviewed-journals.php\">Why publish science in peer-reviewed journals?<\/a>:<\/p><blockquote><p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hhmi.org\/news\/20110627.html\">recent announcement<\/a> of a new journal sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society, and the Wellcome Trust generated a&nbsp;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michaeleisen.org\/blog\/?p=446\">bit<\/a> of&nbsp;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/phylogenomics.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/new-openaccess-journals-welcome.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheTreeOfLife+%28The+Tree+of+Life%29\">discussion <\/a>about the issues in the scientific publishing process it is designed to address&mdash;arbitrary editorial decisions, slow and unhelpful peer review, and so on. Left unanswered, however, is a more fundamental question: why do we publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals to begin with? What value does the existence of these journals add?&nbsp;<strong>In this post, I will argue that cutting journals out of scientific publishing to a large extent would be unconditionally a good thing, and that the only thing keeping this from happening is the absence of a &ldquo;killer app&rdquo;.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p>[emphasis in the original]<\/p><p>This reminds of the discussion between <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/psychotronic-girl\/\">Melody Dye<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/thoughtful-animal\/\">Jason Goldman<\/a> on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bloggingheads.tv\/diavlogs\/31010?in=13:09&amp;out=20:58\">bloggingheads.tv<\/a>.
