I&rsquo;ve been talking with experts about some of the most thought-provoking areas of virus research&ndash;<\/p><p>1.<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pressblog.uchicago.edu\/2011\/05\/03\/traffic_carl_zimmer_and_w_ian.html\"> Can viruses control our minds?<\/a><\/p><p>2. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pressblog.uchicago.edu\/2011\/05\/12\/traffic_carl_zimmer_and_richar.html\">Should we eliminate smallpox?<\/a><\/p><p>3. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pressblog.uchicago.edu\/2011\/05\/20\/traffic_carl_zimmer_and_timoth.html\">How can we use viruses to cure disease?<\/a><\/p><p>Today I talk with Penny Chisholm of MIT <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pressblog.uchicago.edu\/2011\/05\/27\/traffic_carl_zimmer_and_penny.html\">about the viruses that fill the worlds oceans<\/a> (a billion in every spoonful). They kill off half the bacteria in the ocean every day, dumping out carbon and having enormous ecological effects&ndash;and perhaps even effects on the planet&rsquo;s climate. Chisholm and I speculate on whether we could use viruses to manipulate the planet as a whole.
