Two weeks ago, I inadvertently opened the floodgates to a wave of creativity from the SoftLayer Development\/Technology organization. Lance<\/a> came by my office and dropped off a server he was given, and while I would have taken it home, souped it up and done something cool with it in previous years (or decades) in my life, I find myself in more of a “just buy an iMac” camp now. <\/p>\n

Rather than endanger the safety of our employees by sending out a “First one to grab the server from my office gets to keep it” email, I sent out more of a challenge: “Write a haiku or limerick stating why you want the server. If I get more than one submission, I\u2019ll pick the best poem. Oh … And no Nantucket limericks.”<\/p>\n

I expected one or two entries to come in, but to my surprise, I was greeted with dozens almost immediately:<\/p>\n

\n

Windows NT crashed.
\nI am the Blue Screen of Death.
\nNo one hears your screams. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

There was a young man with a lance
\nWho had three kids to finance
\nYes they look and they see
\nAsking for a PC
\nBut their dad said no not a chance<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Linux or Windows
\nNot up to how the wind blows
\nThe penguin’s a go<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

When you\u2019re whipping your verse into shape
\nAnd are caught in a verse-challenged scrape,
\nThe delete key is handy.
\nAssisted by brandy,
\nAnd last, but not least, try escape.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Given the overwhelming initial response, we sweetened the deal a little by adding a second server to the mix (from George<\/a>). When it came time to judge and announce the winners, I had to do so with my own poem … which killed me because I hadn’t written a poem in years. <\/p>\n

My inbox laden
\nServer Poets bring me pride
\nRewards were doubled<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

There once was a SLayer named Bradley
\nWhose poem was flattering badly
\nHe said 3BFL
\nWe said \u2018Oh, What the Hell\u2019
\nAnd gave him a server quite gladly<\/p>\n

Among numerous entries we found
\nThat nerdy rhymes and rhymers abound
\nAnd so many came forth
\nOur hand was quite forced
\nSo to the contest more servers were bound<\/p>\n

Thus also a Slayer named Hemsell
\nWas chosen to leave with a morsel
\nWash the zeros away
\nRip and store CDs today
\nMake this sad server sing loud and fell<\/p>\n

With generous swagger Karidis did add
\nA prize sure to make the cable co mad
\nFor Scott Thompson\u2019s poem
\nWas moving and solemn
\nAn Apple TV should not make him sad<\/p>\n

And finally the team of Hannon and Chong
\nGrammar and spelling and format all wrong
\nBut their desire so true
\nAnd coding poetry new
\nRequest will be supported so strong<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Congratulations to Bradley and David for winning the servers and to Scott Thompson for walking away with the unadvertised Apple TV! When we were going through the submissions, we couldn’t help but reward the submission from Chong and Harold – A coding limerick!<\/p>\n
