{"id":3363,"date":"2009-12-26T15:08:09","date_gmt":"2009-12-26T15:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/cassini-spacecraft-to-monitor-north-pole-on-titan\/"},"modified":"2009-12-26T15:08:09","modified_gmt":"2009-12-26T15:08:09","slug":"cassini-spacecraft-to-monitor-north-pole-on-titan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/space-station\/cassini-spacecraft-to-monitor-north-pole-on-titan.php","title":{"rendered":"Cassini Spacecraft to Monitor North Pole on Titan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_Tt2NuKGJASc\/SzR74ztINGI\/AAAAAAAABSM\/UuQ7eyVdHEU\/s1600-h\/NASA-Cassini-spacecraft.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/f6a84_414343main_cassini20091224-full.jpg\" alt=\"Artist concept of NASA's Cassini spacecraft flying by the north polar region of Saturn's moon Titan on Dec. 27\" border=\"0\"><\/a><span>Though there are no plans to investigate whether <span><a href=\"http:\/\/spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com\/\">Saturn's moon<\/a> Titan<\/span> has a <span>Santa Claus<\/span>, <span><a href=\"http:\/\/spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/passing-of-stan-lebar.html\">NASA's Cassini<\/a> <\/span>will zoom close to <span>Titan's north pole<\/span> this weekend.<p>The flyby, which brings <span><a href=\"http:\/\/spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/cassini-holiday-movies-showcase-dance.html\">Cassini<\/a> <\/span>to within about <span>960 kilometers<\/span> (600 miles) of the Titan surface at 82 degrees north latitude, will take place the evening of <span>Dec. 27 Pacific time<\/span>, or shortly after midnight Universal Time on Dec. 28.<\/p><p>The encounter will enable <span>scientists <\/span>to gather more detail on how the lake-dotted north polar region of Titan changes with the seasons. <span>Scientists <\/span>will be using high-resolution radar to scan the large and numerous lakes in the north polar region for shape-shifting in size and depth. The ion and neutral mass spectrometer team will take baseline measurements of the <span>atmosphere <\/span>to compare with the moon's south polar region when <span>Cassini <\/span>flies by that area on Jan. 12. <span>Cassini <\/span>will also be collecting images for a mosaic of a bright region called Adiri, where the <span>Huygens <\/span>probe landed nearly five years ago.<\/p><p><span>Cassini <\/span>will have released the <a href=\"http:\/\/spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/mayon-volcano-phillipines.html\"><span>Huygens probe<\/span><\/a> exactly five years and three days before this latest flyby. Huygens began its journey down to Titan on the evening of Dec. 24, 2004 California time, or early<span> Dec. 25 Universal Time<\/span>, and reached the surface<span> Jan. 14, 2005<\/span>.<\/p><p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/off-duty-day-for-new-expanded-crew.html\">Cassini<\/a> <\/span>last flew by Titan on <span>Dec. 11, 2009 California time<\/span>, or <span>Dec. 12 Universal Time<\/span>.
