{"id":33481,"date":"2011-04-03T15:43:13","date_gmt":"2011-04-03T15:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/gravity-working-as-usual-cosmic-variance\/"},"modified":"2011-04-03T15:43:13","modified_gmt":"2011-04-03T15:43:13","slug":"gravity-working-as-usual-cosmic-variance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/astronomy\/gravity-working-as-usual-cosmic-variance.php","title":{"rendered":"Gravity, Working As Usual | Cosmic Variance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am in absolutely no position to judge the technical execution of this work, but a group has posted a possible solution to the &ldquo;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pioneer_anomaly\">Pioneer Anomaly<\/a>&rdquo; on the Physics\/Astronomy ArXiV server (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/xxx.lanl.gov\/abs\/1103.5222\">http:\/\/xxx.lanl.gov\/abs\/1103.5222<\/a>).<\/p><p>For those who haven&rsquo;t been following along at home, there appear to be subtle unexpected Sun-ward accelerations (i.e. higher than expected decelerations) seen in the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft while leaving the Solar System. Sean posted an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2010\/12\/15\/farewell-pioneer-anomaly\/\">earlier discussion<\/a> of the anomaly and a possible reported solution that does not involve modifying gravity. However, this latest paper is by a different group, and posits that reflections within the spacecraft are enough to explain the discrepancies.
