Is everything you know about nuclear power plants out of the Simpsons? <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/edyong.tumblr.com\/post\/3822385701\/nuclear-energy-101-inside-the-black-box-of-power\">Start here<\/a>.<br>Other good explainers: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/news\/2011\/03\/understanding-japans-nuclear-crisis.ars\">John Timmer at Ars Technica<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/18398734\">The Economist<\/a>, and an excellent, unique <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/interactive\/2011\/mar\/16\/japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-nuclear-sample\">video explainer<\/a> from the Guardian, featuring Ian Sample looking over at the week&rsquo;s events.<br>Andrew Maynard was one of the first with a good guide on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/48ofu6l\">health effects of radiation<\/a>. Also have a look at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ksjtracker.mit.edu\/2011\/03\/18\/confusion-and-explanation-over-radiation-doses-rates-and-when-they-are-deadly\/\">this Knight Tracker post<\/a> for links to other good (and very bad) explainers on how radiation is measured and what it does to you.<br>Chris Rowan wrote a great explainer about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/blog\/post.cfm?id=japan-eqarthquake-explainer-2011-03-14\">the earthquake and tsunami at Scientific American<\/a><br>Cristine Russell compares the Fukushima situation to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2011\/03\/what-the-media-doesnt-get-about-meltdowns\/72418\/\">Three Mile Island<\/a>, which she reported on, and suggests some good sources <\/p><p><strong>Reporting<\/strong><\/p><p> Geoff Brumfiel and David Cyranoski absolutely killed with their reporting over at Nature.
