{"id":325653,"date":"2019-09-14T14:24:10","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T18:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/mit-team-accidentally-invents-blackest-material-in-existence.php"},"modified":"2019-09-14T14:24:10","modified_gmt":"2019-09-14T18:24:10","slug":"mit-team-accidentally-invents-blackest-material-in-existence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/mit-team-accidentally-invents-blackest-material-in-existence.php","title":{"rendered":"MIT Team \u201cAccidentally\u201d Invents Blackest Material in Existence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2019\/09\/black2-300x158.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><p>On Thursday, a team of MIT engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acsami.9b08290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>that they&rsquo;d created a material that absorbs 99.995 percent of light that reaches it &mdash; making it even blacker than Surrey NanoSystems&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/vantablack-bmw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mind-bending Vantablack<\/a>, which absorbs 99.965 percent of light.<\/p><p>But perhaps even more remarkable than the light-absorbing capabilities of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2019\/blackest-black-material-cnt-0913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">super black material<\/a> is how the MIT team discovered it: by accident.<\/p><p>In an attempt to boost certain properties of electrically conductive materials, the MIT team removed the oxide layer from aluminum and began growing carbon nanotubes on it.<\/p><p>&ldquo;I remember noticing how black it was before growing carbon nanotubes on it, and then after growth, it looked even darker,&rdquo; researcher Kehang Cui <a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2019\/blackest-black-material-cnt-0913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>MIT News<\/em><\/a>. &ldquo;So I thought I should measure the optical reflectance of the sample.&rdquo;<\/p><p>That&rsquo;s when the team discovered that it had created the world&rsquo;s new blackest material, which it detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acsami.9b08290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> published in the journal <em>ACS-Applied Materials and Interfaces<\/em> on Thursday.<\/p><p>The MIT researchers almost immediately partnered with artist Diemut Strebe to coat a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-redemption-of-vanity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$2 million diamond<\/a> in the material as part of an art exhibit that launched at the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.<\/p><p>The MIT team has since offered up the material to any interested artists.
