{"id":324339,"date":"2019-05-25T03:54:36","date_gmt":"2019-05-25T07:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/scientists-set-new-temperature-record-for-superconductivity.php"},"modified":"2019-05-25T03:54:36","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T07:54:36","slug":"scientists-set-new-temperature-record-for-superconductivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/scientists-set-new-temperature-record-for-superconductivity.php","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Set New Temperature Record for Superconductivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2019\/05\/superconductor-record-temperature-300x158.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"Scientists discover a superconductor that works at temperatures nearly 50 Celsius degrees (84.6 Fahrenheit degrees) hotter than the previous record high.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Hot Damn<\/h2><p>An international team of scientists has built a superconductor that functions at 250 Kelvin, or -23 degrees Celsius &mdash; or just-9 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p><p>That&rsquo;s a few degrees colder than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/extremes\/scec\/records\/fl\/tmin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chilliest winter day<\/a> in Florida history, but it&rsquo;s&nbsp;nearly 50 Celsius degrees (84.6 Fahrenheit degrees) hotter than the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/superconductivity-record-sparks-wave-of-follow-up-physics-1.18191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record high<\/a> for superconductivity&nbsp;&mdash; and it puts the &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-019-1201-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holy grail<\/a>&rdquo; of energy transmission almost within our reach.<\/p><h2>Wasted Energy<\/h2><p>First discovered in 1911, superconductors are devices that can conduct electricity with zero resistance.<\/p><p>Because none of the energy is lost during the transmission process, superconductors could allow us to generate electricity in one place&nbsp;&mdash; a solar farm in a sunny region of the U.S., for example&nbsp;&mdash; and send it&nbsp;all over the place&nbsp;without wasting any.<\/p><p>The problem is&nbsp;that scientists have yet to create a practical superconductor&nbsp;&mdash; the devices all require extreme conditions, such as freezing cold temperatures and incredibly high pressures, which&nbsp;limits their usefulness.<\/p><h2>Super Discovery<\/h2><p>That&rsquo;s why scientists across the globe are on the hunt for a superconductor that works at <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/room-temperature-superconductor-patent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">room temperature<\/a>&nbsp;&mdash; and this new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-019-1201-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study,<\/a> published on Wednesday in the journal <em>Nature<\/em>, represents a giant leap forward in that effort.<\/p><p>In it, the scientists describe how they&nbsp;created&nbsp;a type of&nbsp;material called a lanthanum superhydride.
