{"id":315825,"date":"2019-03-09T11:51:20","date_gmt":"2019-03-09T16:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/seaweed-straw-looks-feels-and-acts-like-plastic-says-startup.php"},"modified":"2019-03-09T11:51:20","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T16:51:20","slug":"seaweed-straw-looks-feels-and-acts-like-plastic-says-startup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/seaweed-straw-looks-feels-and-acts-like-plastic-says-startup.php","title":{"rendered":"Seaweed Straw \u201cLooks, Feels, and Acts Like Plastic,\u201d Says Startup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2019\/03\/startup-seaweed-straws-like-plastic-300x158.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"To address the world's plastic problem, startup Loliware has created seaweed straws that can be composted or allowed to biodegrade in the ocean.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Seaweed Sippers<\/h2><p>Every day, Americans use an estimated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecocycle.org\/bestrawfree\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 million plastic straws<\/a>&nbsp;&mdash; and the vast majority are ending up in<a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/plastic-straws-disappearing-oceans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> landfills or oceans<\/a>, where they&rsquo;ll likely remain for hundreds of years.<\/p><p>More and more locations are starting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/2018\/07\/news-plastic-drinking-straw-history-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban these straws<\/a>, but rather than asking people to live a straw-less existence, a&nbsp;startup&nbsp;called Loliware thinks we should provide them with an environmentally friendly alternative&nbsp;&mdash; and that&rsquo;s why they&rsquo;re now proposing we sip our sodas through seaweed.<\/p><h2>Breaking It Down<\/h2><p>Loliware has developed a straw that the company&rsquo;s&nbsp;sustainability adviser, Daniela Saltzman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/loliware-plastic-straws-seaweed-edible-2019-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told&nbsp;<em>Business Insider<\/em><\/a> &ldquo;looks, feels, and acts like plastic.&rdquo; However, it&rsquo;s actually created out of &ldquo;hyper-compostable&rdquo; seaweed that&nbsp;biodegrades much like a banana peel on land and breaks down in weeks in water.<\/p><p>&ldquo;A disposable product that&rsquo;s built to last for centuries&nbsp;&mdash; i.e., a plastic straw&nbsp;&mdash; makes no sense,&rdquo; Saltzman said, &ldquo;but one that can be composted or safely biodegrades in the ocean, that&rsquo;s obviously fine.&rdquo;<\/p><p>This summer the company will begin shipping its seaweed straws to several customers, including hospitality chain Marriott and beverage company Pernod Ricard.<\/p><p>By the end of 2020, Loliware expects to be able to produce 30 billion straws in a variety of styles, according to a <em>Fast Company<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90315817\/these-straws-work-like-plastic-but-theyre-hyper-compostable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story<\/a>, and it&rsquo;s aiming for a production cost about the same as paper straws.<\/p><h2>Grasping at Straws<\/h2><p>Loliware isn&rsquo;t the first company to produce an alternative to plastic straws, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/news\/articles\/trying-reusable-straws-plastic-bamboo-paper-metal-stainless-steel-glass-straw\/106086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">existing options<\/a> leave much to be desired.<\/p><p>Reusable stainless steel straws can be a pain to clean, bamboo ones can leave a woody taste in the drinker&rsquo;s mouth, and glass straws are a bad idea for klutzes prone to dropping things.<\/p><p>Paper straws are disposable, so that&rsquo;s a benefit, but they can also become mushy quickly and cause whatever you&rsquo;re drinking to <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/quartzy\/1324163\/ban-plastic-straws-just-dont-use-paper-ones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taste like, well, paper<\/a>.<\/p><p>According to Loliware, its seaweed straws only start to turn soft after 18 hours of use.
