{"id":310475,"date":"2019-01-13T22:41:56","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T03:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/darpa-wants-to-build-conscious-robots-using-insect-brains.php"},"modified":"2019-01-13T22:41:56","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T03:41:56","slug":"darpa-wants-to-build-conscious-robots-using-insect-brains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/darpa-wants-to-build-conscious-robots-using-insect-brains.php","title":{"rendered":"DARPA Wants to Build Conscious Robots Using Insect Brains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2019\/01\/darpa-wants-conscious-robots-insect-brains-300x158.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Pentagon's emerging technologies unit put out a call last week for proposals that use insect brains to control robots.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Insect Brains<\/h2><p>The Pentagon&rsquo;s emerging technologies unit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index.php?s=opportunity&amp;mode=form&amp;id=5fdb0522f0667e24e19274519b8ef011&amp;tab=core&amp;_cview=0\">put out a call<\/a> last week for proposals that use insect brains to control robots&nbsp;&mdash; because they could be used to create efficient new models for artificial intelligence, but also because they could be used to explore the meaning of consciousness.<\/p><p>&ldquo;Nature has forced on these small insects drastic miniaturization and energy efficiency, some having only a few hundred neurons in a compact form-factor, while maintaining basic functionality,&rdquo; reads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/utils\/view?id=bb2722b7974765cc9f4e93fea8efbacf\">a document<\/a>&nbsp;in the proposal. &ldquo;Furthermore, these organisms are possibly able to display increased subjectivity of experience.&rdquo; It goes on to say that there&rsquo;s evidence suggesting that &ldquo;even small insects have subjective experiences, the first step towards a concept of &lsquo;consciousness.'&rdquo;<\/p><h2>Bug Hunt<\/h2><p>The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is famed for funding projects that <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/860873\/a-1973-map-of-the-internet-charted-by-darpa\/\">led to the early internet<\/a>. But it&rsquo;s also a well-funded research arm for the U.S. military&nbsp;&mdash; and one of its key areas of interest, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2018\/11\/the-pentagon-wants-to-weaponize-the-brain-what-could-go-wrong\/570841\/\">riveting&nbsp;<em>Atlantic<\/em> feature<\/a> this past autumn, is to create brain-computer interfaces that can &ldquo;program soldiers&rsquo; brains.&rdquo;<\/p><p>The feature suggested broad interest at DARPA in technologies that bridge the gap between computers and the brains of humans and animals.<\/p><p>&ldquo;They could inject memory using the precise neural codes for certain skills,&rdquo; Justin Sanchez, who directs work at DARPA about research on healing the mind and body, told the magazine about a project that had transplanted memories into the brains of rats. &ldquo;If I know the neural codes in one individual, could I give that neural code to another person? I think you could.&rdquo;<\/p><h2>Moon Shot<\/h2><p>DARPA is offering $1 million to the company it awards the insect brain proposal to. First the winning bidder will need to complete a feasibility study on mapping an insect&rsquo;s central intelligence system. Then it will need to create a &ldquo;proof of concept&rdquo; platform that uses the insect brain architecture to create &ldquo;more capable AI hardware.&rdquo;<\/p><p>It sounds like a long shot&nbsp;&mdash; at least for now.
